One player development staffer I spoke with is much higher on Conley's potential than Ryde Rodriguez or even Jon Edwards, two players against whom he may be competing with for jobs at PB.

He has match up lefties BB, and righties. We need a lights out two inning guy that can also pitch the 8th. We need a an old fashion fireman. Mott is just an arsonist on the prowl.

I do enjoy tea leaves, and acorns which are bitter though even in their best state.  I glad your trying to follow a line off reasoning CC.  Things to note;

A collusion is acting together to an agreed end. The line of simply suppressing salary and market expectations is likely recognized by all owners as a collective aspiration. That is hardly the point here. There are factions within ownership. Selig is a representative of a very powerful elitist faction.

If you read the article with BD yesterday, it is easy to see who your GM is and how his mind works. He has got it going on here is ST Louis, more than you know. The stand alone offer that changed baseball came from Arlington Texas, just after W was elected. It has really changed baseball. Now that it has changed, containing and reversing that trend represents huge profits.
Your price of beer is never going back down, but payroll might.

I started writing about finance and Sachs/Gold boys here 2yrs ago. For a reason. Some of you might be able to follow the big picture.................... What you can't see so well yet, and I know this to be true, S&G made huge profits through the W years as a Hedge Fund and commodity trader.
Their private knowledge and financing of the junk derivative securities and knowledge of how it would end, allowed them to control and predict market fluctuation on the way to gargantuan profits................. most held off shore.  Back to the point.  BD was on that train.  He is arrogant and opinionated, and his elitist qualities might easily be construed as racist. etc;

Bottom line.........something happened in NY and Boston this year............... and something is happening in St Louis too. Lets just watch. I know that BD plays hardball.........winner has nothing to do with a baseball game. That's just a favorable market condition.

I'm curious about Kyle Conley. He had that rough start in QC, but then tore through the NY-P: .385/.452/.752, with 24 XBH in 29 games.

He'll be 23 in May, so there isn't any time to waste. It'll be interesting to see if he can handle PB right away.

Westie is reading some of the leaves right (blind squirrel? :) ) but is drawing the wrong conclusions. The lack of a viable offer to Pujols makes it less likely he will be traded rather than more so. BD knows he would have to have made a reasonable offer to Pujols that wasn't accepted in order to trade him. Westie also implies that BD doesn't want to pay up for Pujols as he wants to hold the collusion line intact. However, if he trade him that means someone else is willing to cross the line. Doesn't make sense.

Adams had a tremendous start offensively in short-season ball. If could maintain his power and somehow manage to continue to hit for average, too, it would be quite the combination. Those who do the former without the latter tend to fall by the wayside as they move up.

The lefty-righty thing makes all the diference to Tony. Can you see him ever bringing in a lefty when there is a righty stepping into the box.

Craig on the roster would be fun. He'd have to play now and then. Would it be MH to sit or AP. Some incredible theories could be spun from that.

Lou, Shepherd was out of the game last season. Technically on the restricted list. I don't have the details of his personal situation that was behind it.

M25, great point on the lack of power. It is really system-wide. It is on my long list of blog topics. Last season, only two players across the nine minor league clubs hit more than 15 home runs.

Thanks Brian, I'm glad these are back! The Memphis club projects to have next to no power outside of Mark Hamilton if Mather and Craig make the big club, thank goodness they should have some arms or it could make for a long year playing small ball vs all the HR's in the PCL..

The bench boy sees it right BB. Right ? Left? whats the difference in the end. Strike outs are the point for a reliever.

Issue, BD knows the value of an ace up his sleeve. They will use the argument that it might endanger his future and further lessen the value of Hawksworth who is out of options. That logic would also piss off Tony and AP, which couched in logic may be the real point I'm afraid. You would think that there is no way Craig won't make it. That would be a dead give away if they say they want him to have more at bats. That will rile up the boys too. I'm just wander how the hell are they going to keep Ruben on the team. I'm looking for a trade move if he can't cut it.

Garcia can relieve, just like Wainwright in 2006. The pen is a good way to ease a rook into the majors.

Walt was running an old folks home, too many has beens. Under Mo, the Cards are getting younger.

I'm not expecting any big surprises for the opening day roster. If Garcia makes it, it would be as 5th starter, with McClellan staying in the pen where he belongs. Gotay making it would be a surprise.

Bling, BD has 10 very large sitting around in "dry powder form". You should be looking at ways he is figuring to keep it dry. There will be a cry from allot of folks when this team is set. Keeping promising prospects to replace likely failures is cost efficient, and he has a track record of doing that. If they figure Hawksworth isn't going to cut it, they need to trade him now. If not, watch out.
As BD said," you never know whats going to happen in a baseball game".

John is a smart guy Brian. He isn't going to yield to the current valuation of the FA talent. He will stay visible while making some money. He loves to play. Twins were never even considered. Isn't a way in the world that anyone is going to want to "try" their new winter ball facility, especially a 42yr old held together with new age magic.

Joe Nathans arm has been a work in progress for years. It finally broke down. I believe he may have decided to avoid the ice area himself, opting to be healthy for the next round of contract talks starting with the activation of his 2012 / 12.5 club option. A wise man.

The Cards said they wanted to sign Albert, Albert said he wants to stay. Both sides have expressed public positions.
So when will they negotiate? The Cards just set the winter record for high spending on a position player with Holliday. They do not need to exceed even this, all in one off-season. Also, Pujols is under control for two more seasons, so there is no rush as yet for the Cards to sign him to an extension.
Mo and Lozano have probably chatted in broad terms about what the top of the market looks like, nowadays. The economy is a source of uncertainty and holds down even mega-salaries. Come October and November 2010, the Union may want the Cards to define the top of the market for a position player, for the second year in a row. Or the Cards may want to wait and see what the best free agent position player commands next December.
If the Cards extend Albert 7 more years as they did Holliday and do so today, then they will take on a commitment 9 years into the future. But if they wait to next winter to do the same thing, it will only be an 8 year commitment. Given the cost of the top salary in the game, even this one year is a significant difference from the team's viewpoint.
The Cards could even wait until after the 2011 season and Pujols becomes a free agent. This is what they did with Holliday, and this situation ultimately worked out for both player and team.

The Cards are not "losing leverage." On the Pujols situation, its all about what is top dollar? Albert is going to get top dollar.
Negotiations will start when both sides want them to be conducted seriously and quickly. Until this time is mutually reached, it will be a waiting game. And all the Buster Olneys will write their stuff.

Garcia could land as long reliever. It will be hard for him not to do so.
If Motte continues to pitch ok, he could retain a job. If Hawksworth continues to struggle, he will land at Memphis. The Cards would like Boggs to earn a job. Garcia could land the final slot.
If they had to pick the pen today, it could be McClellan, Motte, Boggs, Franklin, Garcia, T Miller, Reyes, with Hill as the 5th starter.

Its nice Craig, Mather, and Stavinoha are hitting, unlike Greene, Gotay, and Jay. Mather might be able to serve as 4th OF. Craig or Stavinoha might earn a niche as top pinch-hitter.

Not one of your more important posts Jumbo. I think "Having a Clue" check is available for PC and Mac. Google it.............................. you're clueless if you think Buster doesn't weigh each little tattle tale "advertisement" that he is given. He is protecting a source. Every high end franchise has had talks about AP at some time or another. How not? The only reason a Philly exec drops a dime is to point this out? ...................... The pressure is on Albert. Mo says we aren't trading AP. Albert says his agent told him the Cards haven't bothered to begin a negotiation. Cardinals are losing leverage as time passes....................unless Albert is injured or has a sub par season. Lozano knows Albert doesn't want to take his family to the city. He knows AP is posturing for the Cardinals to make him the #1. I think BD is going to stick with the MLB owners on this one and threaten to continue their collusion. As I've said before, this thing may have already been decided................and Jumbo, yes its back to the bench for awhile.

Don't worry about Westy, Jumbo. Sometimes stuff can leach out of the liver from the old days, that's all. Happens.

Albert says he goes in to ST like he has to make the team. Lets take him at his word. Craig is out-playing him by a margin, so lets put him first at first on the depth chart. Challenge Albert to play his way back to the top. I'd go ahead and drop Schu to back-up status as well. As to our pitchers, they stink. I'm sure they are 'working on stuff'.

lefties today.......0/7..................add our righty/lefty batting third................0/11 .

My solution ............. buy out 2011 in a 5yr extension for 125 million. Let them negotiate the record setting years at that time. Everyone comes out looking good. Pressure off.

The real issues here are recognizing the dangers to AP. Greatness is a fragile thing beneath all of the posturing. When a mystery blogger broke the Khalil story, I remember them pointing out that not releasing him at that point could endanger his whole career. Management covered their ass with the "anxiety" diagnosis which obscured there culpability in trading for him in the first place. They strung him along as a testimonial to there compassionate nature. Right. The AP situation in its most profitable form to management is a bad season. In my estimation that's a 100 million dollar reversal in his contract expectation. If they attempt to leverage him here by waiting, that goes right against his personal performance expectation. This guy is in trouble. If he can't address this emotionally, his denial will lead him to a trade me posture, or to excepting the 10/200 life preserver with all the differed payment options still at play. BD/Mo have likely measured the nature of AP's relationship to his Agent at this point. They are working to exploit this vulnerability. WC is not wrong here. I realize that this is not good news. My solution works in good faith for all sides.

If he can’t address this emotionally, his denial will lead him to a trade me posture, or to excepting the 10/200 life preserver with all the differed payment options still at play. BD/Mo have likely measured the nature of AP’s relationship to his Agent at this point. They are working to exploit this vulnerability. WC is not wrong here. I realize that this is not good news. My solution works in good faith for all sides.

Tony is a player Jumbo. His outrage is very "tactically considerate". If its a play from within, or just the MLB community attacking, Tony isn't going to be out flanked.

The Cards do not need to take polls of fan opinions. Howard is overpaid. The fan base may be happy he had enjoyed ML success, but there would be little fan support for giving up Pujols for Howard. If TLR is sensitive, its because he understands its going to be one dopey rumor after another, until Albert's contract is settled, so TLR is getting in a tough frame of mind for fighting through them all.

Gosh. If you were Ari and wanted to take a sample of Pujols sentiment, sure would be a good time to do it. Tony sure is "sensitive" to these easily dismissible rumors. I can remember Mo doing that rumor game with someone in 08, just to check reaction. Can't remember exactly, but it may have been Lohse before the deadline, KL sitting at 11and 2 or something like that.

I have often thought that scheduling some day-night double headers would be a way to keep the WS out of November and maybe start the regular season a few days later. No gates would be lost as the stadium is cleared out between games.

Instead, maybe the day-nights could be used to create more off days which would allow more scheduling flexibility. I'm not sure how that could be used, but at least maybe we could avoid nonsense like the Cards/Cubs schedulig this year.

Imagine a Cards/Cubs saturday day/night DH at busch. Holy cow. I'd definatly have to take the train.

I'm OK with inter-league play as long as we don't use the DH here.

If you really want to have a laugh and have MLB.com, listen to the A's/ Cinci first inning. 10 up, 10 runs with no outs against Ben Sheets. Oh yeah, and 10 million dollars.

If your watching Cardinal ball, Albert is trying to stay closed and drive the middle. He is. His pull double was the same swing with the right hand coming over on the off-speed, thus its unusual flight. His attempts to turn on something have been very jumpy, upper body much to fast. He isn't here yet. He seems concerned about managing his spring and regaining his swagger. No sign of off field power as yet which is the real pathway out of his slump. He isn't seeing many arms yet which is a concern....................................I continue to be impressed with MM's work with the everyone else.

This thing kind of blew up in Buster's face. Consider this. How many people in the Philles Org would have participated in a discussion at this level? Then, take the 4 or 5 folks and decide which one of them would risk dropping a dime to Buster on said discussion for purely egotistical reasons and get away with it? What tactic or benefit, if it was a planned leak, could they possible have garnered by such an action. They have a dynamic team chemistry, with most players of importance under long term contracts. Surely this has been a bigger problem for them than ST Louis..................................... Was it someones responsibility to make an exploratory inquiry to the Cardinals at some point? Probably.................. Somebody made that call......... Lozano is on the red eye and Albert is chattering.......pointing out that the Cardinals still have made no offer......................???????????? Mo and BD are players. They know that the trade deadline is an expensive road sign to ignore.

i would liek to see a change to the unbalance of AL and NL teams seems simple to me...of course it does...

Houston moves to NL West
Arizona moves to AL West

done

then we dont have a 6 team division in the NL Central and a 4 team division in the AL West

it could be much more complicated...but since the NL has an extra team why not do it?

Arizona travels basically the same distance around, they havent been around forever in the NL like the Astros so there is little history to deal with...

Houston is in the Central but is the farthest away i think (dont know the distance to PIttsburg)...im sure they woudlnt be too stoked to travel even more, but they already travel...at least this way they get to go to sunnier and more moderate temp places

i have always hated the fact the leagues arent balanced

Pujols’ lead agent, Dan Lozano, visited camp last week without engaging the club in negotiations over an extension. Pujols has asked the club to refrain from commenting on the matter but insisted he believes an agreement is possible. “If we start talking all it takes is 24 hours to reach an agreement. I don’t think it takes a month or two months or a year,” said Pujols, who is under contract through 2011 but enjoys veto power over any deal following the 2010 season. “When you start talking it can two or three days and that’s it, you get it done. If they make an offer and I’m pleased with the offer we’ll get it done.”

Albert's tone here is very revealing. This admission pretty much validates my earlier speculations about Lopez and the content of the first meetings. If I had to take a guess and a good guess it would be, Mo had one of his lackeys make that call. They are players.

"Linear time is just a concept". I don't get into that stuff in connection to baseball, Westy. There was a time I was really into Albert's field equations (not Pujols), not all ten at once, of course. By the way, the 'eternal present' doesn't really exist outside of the mind either, you know.

Linear time is just a concept, an idea BB. It doesn't really exist outside the mind. All existence lies within the eternal present. To the extent that you know the truth of this is the measure of your wisdom. Eliminating the "your" from that equation is the challenge.

RC knows that the problems he focused his attention on are not gone, their potential just transformed into new challenges for a growing boy. The good part is that they are not his problems now. They are now simply lessons taught, hopefully to be understood for their good intentions when the time is right. Sometimes babies are the best teachers. Lets hope for an inspired lesson plan from the "short one".

I don't know Westy. I don't picture RC eminating and all like that. More like: 'Here boy, take this bat, go out there and rip 'em a new one'. Of course, he'd know more about the finer points than I do. He would've passed that along too.

I got to see today's game before heading to the airport with the girls. Had to promise my brother I'd stand there and watch his kid get on the plane. My daughter and I got back a little while ago. Never did get to Saturday's game.

Never saw so much bad pitching.

Sounds like a stupid ass cheap stunt by a station needing ratings.Boot the SOBs out of the park. They got what their stupid stunt deserved. And freedom of speech doesn`t mean you can yell "fire" in a crowded theater or yell racial taunts at someone.Common sense prevailed IMO.

We arrive by many paths RC. The power we have went in search of, emanates from the eternal present. You were never wrong in your concerns. To have failed to express them could have easily lead to a different outcome, not as promising as what your enjoying. Its high stakes partner, and you're a winner.

Another example of a young Dominican who could emerge as a fine prospect is another catcher, Luis Delacruz. He caught the eye of managers in the Gulf Coast League back during 2007, IIRC. He got some play at Quad Cities and Batavia last summer. He must have fine defensive skills. Delacruz will be behind Stock at QC this year.

A different kind of prospect is SS Donovan Solano. Unspeedy and unpowerful, Solano is easy to overlook. But he fields and has risen to AAA; this spring he has had a few at bats and gotten hits. Solano is at least a useful asset for the system, though not beloved for potential.

Finally got to see the today's game. I would say that MM is having a positive influence on most hitters. Light years ahead of last season. At 6'5, Carp was effected by the wind more that you might think.

An example of a young guy who could emerge is C Audry Perez. Perez is 5'9" tall; great catcher Pudge Rodriguez was 5'9", so its not like Perez is too short. Perez hit well in the DSL in 2008, his first year in pro ball, then hit well in 2009 given an impressive leap up to Johnson City. Its going to take the next couple of years for the Cards to find out what they have in Perez, but he might become good.

The Bill James rating is probably reasonable, 14 last year, 24 now Rasmus got promoted, and Wallace, Todd, and Perez traded.

The Baseball America articles may be less useful, given the specific context of the Cards. Since the Latin program got a new commitment in 2005, Sanchez, Samuel, and Castillo (plus Solano) have risen highest, so are mentioned. But the Cards were not recruiting bonus babies back in 2005, so the talent during this time frame is modest. The first priority back in 2005 was setting up infrastructure (scouts and coaches), and wooing buscones.

Lucena was from an even earlier era. The Cards were clearly underachieving in Latin America pre-2005, with Lucena the best of a lame bunch.

What matters now is whether the Cards are recruiting some good bonus babies. And whether some pleasant surprises emerge from the mass of low profile signees. The next couple of years should begin to make this much clearer.

Thanks anyway Brian. As we speak, she is trying to convince me there is no choice but to get to Key West, 'chill for the weekend' and fly out of there getting back in time for class Monday. I need to 'do the Western Union money thing, daddy'. I don't buy any of it, of course. I'm guessing she's en route right now. But I'll send money anyway. My wife will be furious, but, as my daughter pointed out, she's 300 miles from Chicago. Damn, I wish I was that age. I've fired off a srongly worded e-mail to my son. Warning him to avoid his mother. Having been married for 30 years, I'm thinking it would be prudent to just catch a flight back to St. Louis. Do some damage control.

Record rainfall here in FL has to be making travel difficult, bb. That is why no game on the radio, for sure. Some airports offer free internet and others charge.

I am in Palm Beach-ish, but in no position to try to keep up with a young lady. Sorry, bb! ;-)

Crap. I'm stuck at Midway in Chicago. Can't get to Lauderdale or West Palm. My daughter, trying to get back from spring break is stuck 'in miami-ish'. (She was supposed to be up around Palm Beach) My son, who left this morning is now stuck in Atlanta. (He had been tasked with keeping an eye on his sister, but she 'ditched him' and went to Key Largo with their cousin). I was wondering why the game wasn't on the radio. Do airports provide wireless internet, or am I just pirating from somebody? Not a tech guy. Stadium prices for beer.

I was thinking unsigned players. Obviously I don't know the rules but the value would be to the individuals playing at the academy, value to the community the academy is located in , there would be more players available . Hopefully it would lead to more native interest in the
"National PastTime" .
I'm dreaming of more players developing their skills that come from ghettos, farmland and suburbia.
The talent is there, if there were more baseball academies in the USA for young players there could be more interest in being baseball players for disadvantaged people in the US.
It would be a money loser for major league organizations but the value would be in more kids playing baseball in the USA.
Maybe there would be no increase in players beyond those that play high school and college ball already but a sincere shot at it by a mlb organization could find one or two worthwhile players every couple years that otherwise might be in jail, playing football, sitting bankrupt on a farm tractor, etc.

baseball academies in the US have little value. Until a player is 18, you would be developing him to be drafted by someone else. After 18, there a few players who would be worth developing at that age.

"Fleischer visited Bright House Field last March for a media-training session with the Phils but was not asked to return this year. Instead, the team will hear from media consultant Lisa Levine today.

Phillies officials did not wish to comment on the change, but several players remembered Fleischer's presentation as brief and underwhelming."

This article says nothing. Was Ari's agreement with MLB part of why he was doing media seminars?
The fact that it ended.....a yr ago........just might have be an issue. No where does it say that he was hired by the Philles of fired by the Philles, just that he did not return as a speaker on media day.

Don't get me wrong here..................Fleischer is an a----le. He was hired by the Cardinals to do a job. He did. The way I see it, he accomplished exactly what he was asked to do...(by Bud and BD)...... and that was to end the debate about the assent of Steroid era players to the hall. It wasn't intended to be cleaner than it was. Enough blood and tears were shed to drown Roger and Barry.
The larger implications still have to do with collusion law suit vulnerability. Bonds was the poster boy for both sides.......... PU because he was so obviously mistreated and harassed........MLB because he was obviously so unworthy................. That has now pretty much been resolved. Mark will drag the cross.........rightfully so..........and all the others can either join in, or take their chances. The Union isn't going to uses Bonds now in any collusion complaints. That's a looser...............but they are looking for a candidate, of that you can be assured.

Yeah, sorry about that, but the release wasn't posted, so I did not have anything to link to.

Remember those are top talent rankings, so don't necessarily reflect system depth.

I was a little surprised to get linked to the Acta catalog page where I could buy the book. But I saw several things I'd like to read so I bookmarked it, thanks. You need to bet a book project underway Brian, if you don't already.

Most surprising to me is how drastically a team's rank can change in one year. 29th to 7th and 7th to 26th as examples, and quite a few teams with big moves. I'm not sure I can buy that so many systems change that much that fast. In fact, I don't buy it.

Nice article on Rigoli etc. on the Globe site Brian.

One question I have--would the Cardinals consider founding a baseball academy in the USA?
There is a tremendous amount of untapped baseball talent in the homeland.

Brian,
I agree that the motivations of the various interested parties are not necessarily in alignment. La Russa, in addition to wanting an effective hitting coach who is not a distraction, which at the very least should be his primary concern, certainly would like some redemption for McGwire. La Russa, as the manager of the bash brothers, will always be under a cloud as someone who either had no clue what was going on or tacitly endorsed it, or worse. It's hard to divine McGwire's motivations. Unless he has completely blown his money, he should be financially stable and set for life. So, I doubt a monetary motivation. I am sure that he would love to be in the Hall, but it is clear (at least to me) that the current BBWA wants nothing to do with anybody with a taint. I think this will be clear when Bonds and Clemens come up for voting. I would be surprised if either get over 50% on their first ballot. As long as they are refused entry, McGwire has no chance. MLB just wants to put steroids behind them. At the end of the day, they are in the business of making money. As long as people buy tickets, buy jerseys, buy the MLB package, etc., I don't think they really care. Selig styles himself as the guardian of the game, but his main job is to see to it that the owners make money. The problem with steroids only became a real issue when it looked like it would keep people away from the game, or worse, threaten their anti-trust exemption, which would directly effect their bottom line.

However, all that being said, I still think that for the Cardinals (who will still sell plenty of tickets) and hopefully get a good hitting coach who won't be a distraction, the rollout when just fine. The storm has passed and now its time to win some games. There will be a renewed interest near the start of the season, but nothing as crazy as the initial rollout, and there will be further talk when the Cards make the post-season, and if they make the World Series, you can bet that will be part of the story line, but at that point, it will be spun as redemption, unless the Cards face New York, but they have plenty of steroid allegations of their own. The real danger is if the Cards start the season worse than expected or if Pujols and or Holliday hit much worse than expected. I think that McGwire has the right approach and certainly embraces technology more than McRae did, so the proof, as they say, will be in the pudding.

Chris, I suspect there were many different motivations, not all necessarily aligned. You have MLB, the Cardinals, the manager, McGwire himself.

I think that, given the goals of the McGwire roll out, that the PR campaign was quite successful. To my mind, the goal was to get the press corps off of his back come the baseball season. There will be a few questions by local media at the start of the season, but by and large, the story is over. That was the goal wasn't it? ESPN might do a story again once the regular season starts, but the "media circus" just isn't going to be there. That was the goal, and I think it was accomplished. Whether or not Ari Fleischer has lost contracts is probably irrelevant. Perhaps people in baseball see it differently. Perhaps they thought the goal was something different, namely McGwire getting into the Hall. However, from the Cardinals' perspective, they want to have a good hitting coach that doesn't distract the team. To my mind, as long as McGwire turns out to be a good hitting coach, then their goals have been reached.

He seems more suited to cermonial first pitches and wooping it up out in the bleachers. The owners will bob and weave for a while and hopefully do something sensible like hire Mark Lamping for the job.

I didn't mean to suggest you site was overly provocative. It was this article to be more specific.
A sports reporter in Philly notices the absents of Ari at a media seminar, asks a few questions and like magic, a story............. Not a MLB press release, Not a Phillies press release, but a tabloid press release........................... You've heard the story on this right here. Ari did his job perfectly.

How many actually believe that its Tiger Woods who in hiring Ari, and not whats left of his sponsors and the PGA? Re entering for the masters?

Can't believe some haven't heard of W's interest in being comish.

Pro sports generally do not bring in outsider celebs like ex-Presidents to be Commissioners, at least anymore. Few Commissioners could have had less glitz than Selig, an auto dealer.
Also Dubya was a divisive figure and it would not be good for business to make him Commissioner and alienate half of the fans.
Its an interesting idea, Westie, about Commissioner Dubya. But it may be an unwarranted fear you are having out there in liberalville.

You aren't even close BB. The Jockeying by MLB owners for position and influence on the selection of the new Commissioner has already begun. That's all. The steroid issue ended with the departure of the Bush administration. Until the unexpected bonus provided by BD with MM.
Its over now. The Phils are well known for not being in the Selig camp. BD and others will attempt to get W the commissioners job. If the next national election swings to the right....they just might succeed. There will be a battle.

Your blog is provocative Brian. I like it.

There are plenty of amateurs who the Cards sign who seem like smart decisions, its not all Tom Eagers and Brad Furnishs.

Luke Gregerson was a relief pitcher for an NAIA team. He had great stats and they were legit, because he has a strong slider. He was a good find.
Pete Parise is another converted position player, one with a sinker; fine UDFA.
OF Derrick Shepperd had the body, so why not take a gamble? He did not pan out, but its still worth a roll of the dice, because you never know how much a guy can surprise. Every 7th Shepperd or Jon Edwards might develop into a good hitter, so the more you sign, the better.
Boggs and Sam Freeman had crummy ERAs in college, but have the arm strength to break wood bats. Degerman might have worked out, if he could have controlled his curve.

Fleischer, Woods, HGH, A-Rod, it goes on and on, and will only continue to do so, even if the names of players or molecules change.
This is why it should be a relief for Brian to talk with Luhnow about baseball and about real guys who are not celebrities, as yet.

Recently the media hype has spread to Toronto, catching A-Rod, Huston Street, and others from baseball. Baseballers must have found a friendly doc up in Canada. The bad news is he helped Tiger Woods, so now they are linked to the infamous Tiger.

The PED issue served political purposes in 2005. The US was involved in a no-win war in Iraq, so politicians looked around elsewhere for a symbolic "values" issue to deplore and on which to campaign, so as to win your votes.
Sports stars are high publicity figures. As such, they provide free publicity for politicians. Who would not want to restore the competitive integrity of the game, defend motherhood, apple pie? It helps draw attention and win re-elections, and distract the minds of citizens from real problems that involve uncertainties and unpleasant, lose/lose choices.
Given the political appeal of uncovering a steroid "problem" in MLB that was, horrors, even extending into classrooms and corrupting innocent youths, it is unsurprising Fleisher got recruited in 2005 and then again in 2010.

Global Warming is already crashing like the Hindenberg. http://www.gallup.com/poll/126560/Americans-Global-Warming-Concerns-Continue-Drop.aspx

The issue only has still more downside potential. The science has been ripped to shreds, several surface temperature data bases are cross-contaminated and unreliable. This is why Al tried to re-brand it as Climate Change and then Green Energy. They are trying to change the label, since they know the scientific foundation is junk. Republicans used to assume some small amount of underlying merit, however now its becoming a litmus test to laugh at the nonsense.

Fleischer was Dubya's PR guy from 2001-03. He must have quit and looked to cash in on his high public profile.
When the steroids thing came up among Republican congress people during 2005, it made sense for MLB to hire a Republican PR guy. But the Congress changed hands after Nov 2006, so then Fleischer became not quite as useful for his Republican connections. Why the Cards used Fleischer in 2010 may be unclear. Maybe he and Daddy DeWitt go back.
One reason to hire a PR firm is to have a fall guy who can be fired. DeWitt can't easily fire himself.

Jay's book has dropped to 25,000+ on Amazon's list already, headed toward Lou's predicted 100,000+. He is doing well though in the roid star shirt-tale cash-in derby. Jessica Canceco's book is at 150,000+, but its been out a while.

On another thread, Jumbo proclaimed global warming dead, but honest Al's book is holding at 4000+. For comparison, The Hollow Earth by Raymond Bernard, ranks way down at 300,000+. I read it over the winter while Jumbo was wasting time with Twain, and can attest to its entertainment value. "...This controversial book claims that flying saucers not only exist, but that they are the vehicles of a super-race that lives in a huge, underground world whose entrance is in the earth's North Pole." So I would have to dispute Jumbo's position, and side with Westy (as to global warming and Twain). Granted, maybe Al's stature lends staying power.

Carioca: if Schneider has as much arm strength as Mortensen, why would he have lasted to the 20th round? I figure Schneider is more like Broderick or Hearne, a guy who started in college and can do continue in the pros, especially at lower levels. It may be premature to link Schneider and Mortensen, based just on stats.

A plus, go to, unhittable pitch seems important. Wainwright's excellence seems built on a plus curve, supplemented by other pitches. This is why Rich Hill could surprise, if he can control that thing. Luhnow may understand this, since he keeps an eye open for knuckeballers, this spring Zink.

For Luhow, there is a book, Fooled by Randomness, unread by Jumbo. Its about how humans invent after the fact explanations, some of which may be wrong. Lets apply this to scouting. Some player rises to the majors and scouts come up with all sorts of theories about his indominatable never say die determination, but maybe that is not a strong explanation.
Lets consider Michael Taylor, Stanford U, 6'6" 250 lbs. He has a ML bod. The Phillies select him in the 5th round, 2007, just like they took Ryan Howard in 2000. Who cares why these two men hit ok, but not great during their junior years of college? The thing that is easy to measure and know is their size. We know they are big enough to play MLB. Having scouts measure their hearts and minds may be a waste of time, because scouts will come up with some rah-rah theory. The real reason for Howard and Taylor is simple: they have the raw physiques. If they apply themselves to the game, they may excel. Meanwhile the Cards select Tom Eager in the 5th round, 2007, one pick before the Phils grab Taylor. Eager had good stats at Cal Poly, but no plus pitches. He had little upside potential to improve. Is there a lesson from a case like this (Taylor versus Eager) to give more draft day weight to physical potential?

It is a shame Westie got voted off the island of VEB. Lots of negative thoughts there, so you would have thought he would have been accepted. Maybe it was anti-Pujols stuff or insistence on his philosophies of hitting; he can get real worked up about swings.
