There are plenty of amateurs who the Cards sign who seem like smart decisions, its not all Tom Eagers and Brad Furnishs.

Luke Gregerson was a relief pitcher for an NAIA team. He had great stats and they were legit, because he has a strong slider. He was a good find.
Pete Parise is another converted position player, one with a sinker; fine UDFA.
OF Derrick Shepperd had the body, so why not take a gamble? He did not pan out, but its still worth a roll of the dice, because you never know how much a guy can surprise. Every 7th Shepperd or Jon Edwards might develop into a good hitter, so the more you sign, the better.
Boggs and Sam Freeman had crummy ERAs in college, but have the arm strength to break wood bats. Degerman might have worked out, if he could have controlled his curve.

Fleischer, Woods, HGH, A-Rod, it goes on and on, and will only continue to do so, even if the names of players or molecules change.
This is why it should be a relief for Brian to talk with Luhnow about baseball and about real guys who are not celebrities, as yet.

Recently the media hype has spread to Toronto, catching A-Rod, Huston Street, and others from baseball. Baseballers must have found a friendly doc up in Canada. The bad news is he helped Tiger Woods, so now they are linked to the infamous Tiger.

Jolly good fun.

The PED issue served political purposes in 2005. The US was involved in a no-win war in Iraq, so politicians looked around elsewhere for a symbolic "values" issue to deplore and on which to campaign, so as to win your votes.
Sports stars are high publicity figures. As such, they provide free publicity for politicians. Who would not want to restore the competitive integrity of the game, defend motherhood, apple pie? It helps draw attention and win re-elections, and distract the minds of citizens from real problems that involve uncertainties and unpleasant, lose/lose choices.
Given the political appeal of uncovering a steroid "problem" in MLB that was, horrors, even extending into classrooms and corrupting innocent youths, it is unsurprising Fleisher got recruited in 2005 and then again in 2010.

Global Warming is already crashing like the Hindenberg. http://www.gallup.com/poll/126560/Americans-Global-Warming-Concerns-Continue-Drop.aspx

The issue only has still more downside potential. The science has been ripped to shreds, several surface temperature data bases are cross-contaminated and unreliable. This is why Al tried to re-brand it as Climate Change and then Green Energy. They are trying to change the label, since they know the scientific foundation is junk. Republicans used to assume some small amount of underlying merit, however now its becoming a litmus test to laugh at the nonsense.

Fleischer was Dubya's PR guy from 2001-03. He must have quit and looked to cash in on his high public profile.
When the steroids thing came up among Republican congress people during 2005, it made sense for MLB to hire a Republican PR guy. But the Congress changed hands after Nov 2006, so then Fleischer became not quite as useful for his Republican connections. Why the Cards used Fleischer in 2010 may be unclear. Maybe he and Daddy DeWitt go back.
One reason to hire a PR firm is to have a fall guy who can be fired. DeWitt can't easily fire himself.

Jay's book has dropped to 25,000+ on Amazon's list already, headed toward Lou's predicted 100,000+. He is doing well though in the roid star shirt-tale cash-in derby. Jessica Canceco's book is at 150,000+, but its been out a while.

On another thread, Jumbo proclaimed global warming dead, but honest Al's book is holding at 4000+. For comparison, The Hollow Earth by Raymond Bernard, ranks way down at 300,000+. I read it over the winter while Jumbo was wasting time with Twain, and can attest to its entertainment value. "...This controversial book claims that flying saucers not only exist, but that they are the vehicles of a super-race that lives in a huge, underground world whose entrance is in the earth's North Pole." So I would have to dispute Jumbo's position, and side with Westy (as to global warming and Twain). Granted, maybe Al's stature lends staying power.

Carioca: if Schneider has as much arm strength as Mortensen, why would he have lasted to the 20th round? I figure Schneider is more like Broderick or Hearne, a guy who started in college and can do continue in the pros, especially at lower levels. It may be premature to link Schneider and Mortensen, based just on stats.

A plus, go to, unhittable pitch seems important. Wainwright's excellence seems built on a plus curve, supplemented by other pitches. This is why Rich Hill could surprise, if he can control that thing. Luhnow may understand this, since he keeps an eye open for knuckeballers, this spring Zink.

For Luhow, there is a book, Fooled by Randomness, unread by Jumbo. Its about how humans invent after the fact explanations, some of which may be wrong. Lets apply this to scouting. Some player rises to the majors and scouts come up with all sorts of theories about his indominatable never say die determination, but maybe that is not a strong explanation.
Lets consider Michael Taylor, Stanford U, 6'6" 250 lbs. He has a ML bod. The Phillies select him in the 5th round, 2007, just like they took Ryan Howard in 2000. Who cares why these two men hit ok, but not great during their junior years of college? The thing that is easy to measure and know is their size. We know they are big enough to play MLB. Having scouts measure their hearts and minds may be a waste of time, because scouts will come up with some rah-rah theory. The real reason for Howard and Taylor is simple: they have the raw physiques. If they apply themselves to the game, they may excel. Meanwhile the Cards select Tom Eager in the 5th round, 2007, one pick before the Phils grab Taylor. Eager had good stats at Cal Poly, but no plus pitches. He had little upside potential to improve. Is there a lesson from a case like this (Taylor versus Eager) to give more draft day weight to physical potential?

It is a shame Westie got voted off the island of VEB. Lots of negative thoughts there, so you would have thought he would have been accepted. Maybe it was anti-Pujols stuff or insistence on his philosophies of hitting; he can get real worked up about swings.

Luhnow Q's.

Where does he rank the Cards system?

If higher than the consensus (I'm sure it is), what are the others missing? What specific players does he think are not being given their due by the ranksters (I love inventing words)?

Ask him to rank the system's SS's (Solano, Kozma, Jackson, Castillo, Valera, Hernandez, others) in terms of potential (probably wont due it).

What minor leaguers seem to have made the most progress this off season (getting in shape, seem sharper this Spring (not looking for a rehash of players that did well in Winter ball))?

Position switches for minor leaguers this year? Is Scruggs only a 1B? The same question abut Adams and Rodriguez. Will Curtis be moved to 2B? Can Brown, Smith, Hill, and/or Rivera play OF at the major league level (defensive wise). Will Hamilton see significant OF time this year? Can Conley definitely stay as an OF?

Any minor league relievers who will be tried as starters this year? Is Daley going to stay in the pen even if he has refound (love those invented words!) his control? How many walks does he think we'll see out of the Springfield pen between Samuel, Daley, Riefer, and King (just kidding).

What is the major reason guys such as Reifer and Kelly who seem to have great stuff seem very hittable at times?

Blazek, Hooker, Zawacki, and Ferrara - who seems most poised for a breakout this year?

Are there any ground ball specialists in the system who dont have great K rates but who's sinker is so good that is could carry them to the majors?

Who are the best Parise candidates - pitchers who have no hype, good but not great stats, yet could advance quickly?

Do soft tossers such as Addition, Hearne, Castillo and Gorgon have a greater need for an "out" pitch or is it more about mixing the pitches up?

Do they expect Castillo to still add velocity at this point?

Who would he pick as the most likely to pull a Craig or a Walters from last year's draft class (lower round picks who were unimpressive is short season ball but took off their first full season)?

Who does he see at 3B in Springfield (no true 3B candidates that seem ready unless they think Carpenter has progressed that far) ? Is it pretty certain De La Cruz can stay at 3B defensively?

Schnieder and Mortenson had nearly identical 1st year stats - is there much chance of Schneider advancing as rapidly as Mortenson?

Does Cutler have the skills to stay at catcher? Audry Perez's catching skills? Hill will continue catching? - would they keep him at AA to get more catching development even if they thought his bat was ready to move up? Cruz seems to have mastered throwing out runners, what parts of catching does he still need to work on most? Are there any catchers in the system who have yet to show a bat but their catching skills could carry them a long way ( a la a Pagnozzi type)? Was De La Cruz (the catcher) overhyped or is there a hidden reason he hasn't seemed to have progressed much?

Why hasn't Ryde Rodriguez shown much power - is it a swing issue? Do you expect that to change in the near future?

Who are the true CF's in the system (range, speed, arm are no question for the position)

Does he think Jones has the arm to play RF?

Pham and Edwards - are their K issues related more to their swing or to pitch recognition?

Oscar Taveras - how come he gets no hype? true CF?

Are there any players from the DSL/VSL who he thinks have a legitimate shot at starting this year at JC or higher?

What is the key to Parejo advancing? He seems to have stalled.

Is there a next Fransisco Samuel in the system? (great stuff but not harnessed).

Health status of Kopp, Diapoules?

If you think the interview will be too short I have some more :)

Luhnow Q’s.

Where does he rank the Cards system?

If higher than the consensus (I’m sure it is), what are the others missing? What specific players does he think are not being given their due by the ranksters (I love inventing words)?

Ask him to rank the system’s SS’s (Solano, Kozma, Jackson, Castillo, Valera, Hernandez, others) in terms of potential (probably wont due it).

How many walks does he think we’ll see out of the Springfield pen between Samuel, Daley, Riefer, and King (just kidding).

What is the major reason guys such as Reifer and Kelly who seem to have great stuff seem very hittable at times?

Blazek, Hooker, Zawacki, and Ferrara – who seems most poised for a breakout this year?

Are there any ground ball specialists in the system who dont have great K rates but who’s sinker is so good that is could carry them to the majors?

Who are the best Parise candidates – pitchers who have no hype, good but not great stats, yet could advance quickly?

Do soft tossers such as Addition, Hearne, Castillo and Gorgon have a greater need for an “out” pitch or is it more about mixing the pitches up?

Do they expect Castillo to still add velocity at this point?

Who would he pick as the most likely to pull a Craig or a Walters from last year’s draft class (lower round picks who were unimpressive is short season ball but took off their first full season)?

Who does he see at 3B in Springfield (no true 3B candidates that seem ready unless they think Carpenter has progressed that far) ? Is it pretty certain De La Cruz can stay at 3B defensively?

Schnieder and Mortenson had nearly identical 1st year stats – is there much chance of Schneider advancing as rapidly as Mortenson?

Does Cutler have the skills to stay at catcher? Audry Perez’s catching skills? Hill will continue catching? – would they keep him at AA to get more catching development even if they thought his bat was ready to move up? Cruz seems to have mastered throwing out runners, what parts of catching does he still need to work on most? Are there any catchers in the system who have yet to show a bat but their catching skills could carry them a long way ( a la a Pagnozzi type)? Was De La Cruz (the catcher) overhyped or is there a hidden reason he hasn’t seemed to have progressed much?

Why hasn’t Ryde Rodriguez shown much power – is it a swing issue? Do you expect that to change in the near future?

Who are the true CF’s in the system (range, speed, arm are no question for the position)

Does he think Jones has the arm to play RF?

Pham and Edwards – are their K issues related more to their swing or to pitch recognition?

Oscar Taveras – how come he gets no hype? true CF?

Are there any players from the DSL/VSL who he thinks have a legitimate shot at starting this year at JC or higher?

What is the key to Parejo advancing? He seems to have stalled.

More ideas for Luhnow:
--when did the idea of the 8 man minor league rotations begin, within the Cards?
--what has he learned from working at scouting US amateurs?
--what lessons have been learned from the efforts in Latin America?
--some teams have been active in Asia, others in Europe. The Rays are starting in Brazil. Are the Cards content to focus on the Dominican and Venezuela?

Westie's Spring Training kit:

Flashlight and gloves for looking under rocks - he thinks there is gold there but it is simply snails and slugs.

Odor detector - despite the fact that a reliable one doesn't exists, he thinks everything smells.

Pop psychology book - used for explaining any situation where a player struggles (and some where they don't).

Conspiracy Theory DVD and DVD player - a must watch every night so that Westie doesn't loose the faith that Bud istays up late every night trying to figure ut how to manipulate the game.

Thank goodness for the winless Nationals. The Cards eke out a win. Shelby Miller feasts on Chris Duncan. I hope there is a roster slot available for Chris at AAA. Allen Craig demonstrates what a bat is used for. Hope we get some more exhibition games against Riggleman's troops.

Gorgen or McCully have not gotten Cy Youngs yet and its doubtful one is in their futures. In contrast, Lincecum went about 10th in the nation in the draft he signed, so was not underestimated by scouts.
Jess Todd is 5'11" and has pitched well in the minors. The immortal Pedro Martinez is 5'11", but he has a great arm, Tom Gordon 5'9" with a great curve. Drafting a sub 6 foot righthander is not intrinsic nonsense, but on the other hand there are many more misses than successes.
The Cards have more tolerant physical standards than do some teams, preferring college performance over physique. Shane Robinson is a speedy CF, but smallish, an example. Gorgen is another example of a collegiate star who does not have a lot of physical room for further development. 2B Curtis may be an example of a good attitude guy who is hard to project to the ML level. Bittle may be an example of favoring college performance over health. While all amateur prospects have negatives as well as positives, the Cards seem to select at least their fair share of unusual collegiates, another example being Degerman, who had a weird delivery and did not succeed as a pro. I am wondering if the Cards are going to become less open to unusual collegiate players, in future, after seeing the minor league performances of some collegiate stars.

LaRue, Lopez, Lugo, Mather, Craig. Compare that to last year's bench. That's assuming Ryan is a go and Freese is at third.

There is the problem of a weak backup SS, and makeshift backup CF. Short on left handed bat when Lopez is taking a turn at third or corner outfield. But even with that it's way above last year.

The main problem is Tony will want to play Lopez a lot and I just can't see him not having a lefty to come off the bench. If we were to get an innings eater like Looper as the #5, then maybe we can carry another position player.

The drawback to that is there would be one more guy for Tony to be sticking in there disrupting the lineup. A Jay, for example, would get a start in center every time Colby got on a roll. Don't say it, I know, momentum does not exist.

Why cant we draft players with ML-sized bodies, when they are available in the draft, and have to instead sign determined midgets? This is another way of asking the question.

Why do we spurn an underachieving Stanford OF in Taylor, who has upside tools and was recently traded one for one for Wallace, and instead sign a mediocrity like Eager, who now cant rise above A level?

In 2008, the Cards drafted 5'10" RHP Scott Gorgen in the 4th round, passing on a guy like 6'8" Georgia Tech LHP David Duncan. Do the Cards value projection less than some other teams? Even if Gorgen is better in college, given that successful pro careers may last 10 years or more, should the Cards put more draft value on potential for a big framed guy to grow into his physique in the years ahead?

In 2009, we selected Scott Bittle in the 4th round. Bittle had a sore arm, off and on, for years. Was this a calculated medical gamble he could gain from a cleanup shoulder operation?

How are the experiments of converting Tony Cruz and Stephen Hill to catchers going?

Baseball Cube credits Rigoli on signing LHP Rheal Cormier.

More questions:
--with benefit of hindsight, what's Luhnow's biggest regret so far on draft day? (Maybe he will not want to answer, but one good answer would be passing OF Taylor for RHP Tom Eager.)
--do the Cards value determination and good attitude too much on draft day versus innate athleticism?
--do the Cards have more permissive size requirements than some other teams?
--what's more important in scouting: an uncommonly good evaluation on one player or consistently accurate evaluations for many players?

JS, good question about the past winners of the McAlister Award. When I asked for that list, I received the answer that the award will be re-instituted with a new selection process. Apparently they don't want to give me the others until then.

The above piece notes McIlvaine works for the Twins and the Globe-Democrat article gives Rigoli credit for discovering Morris. You seemed to have missed those the first time through.

I will include your questions in the mix. Thanks for them.

For Luhnow:
what scouts have received the Fred McAlister award or is this a secret honor?

how much time is devoted to having to recruit new scouts (to back-fill departures)? is there more scouting turn-over outside the US?

do the Cards, as a routine business practice, aim to learn from past drafts and factor lessons into future ones?

given monster bonuses commanded outside the US, illustrated with Chapman, does this give the Cards new incentive to offer above slot bonuses within the US?

A 2008 awardee, Tom Kotchman of the Angels, is father of Casey; he has scouted Florida and came up with 2B Howie Kendrick, among others. Art Stewart has been a long time guy for the Royals.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Stewart.

Re 2009, Joe McIllvaine has been a strong talent guy for many years, ultimately becoming GM of the Mets. He probably drafted Dwight Gooden, among others. Hes with the Twins now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_McIlvaine Terry Ryan with the Twins has been saluted in 2010.

Rigoli would have signed Jason Motte, 19th round catcher from a low profile New York college. He could have been involved in picking Matt Morris, who played collegiately for Seton Hall in north Jersey, near where Rigoli has been based.

Al Goldis helped the White Sox select Auburn 1Bman Frank Thomas, after the Cards picked a lemon back in 1989. He claims credit for outstanding defensive CF Devon White. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/28/sports/baseball-pair-of-scouts-are-using-history-to-help-shape-the-mets-future.html?pagewanted=1

Albert was unsettled about his first appearance. He broke his own protocol and started a second game and hit the same wall. Now his back is feeling " weak". I've been there. I find the Holiday situation "interesting". Are these two situations connected in any way. Is Tony managing it at all? That's worth a look Brian.

CD's mental state seems the same. Same type of result. Just a hunch.......... Craig has got to stay focused. He is a very important element on this team........................ I'm watching Ludwick. He must realize that if CR takes the 5th spot, all the cheap RBI's aren't coming his way. Its a career changing situation when you talk about contract expectations.

His early stats aren't any worse than Albert's or Luddy's. If he stays healthy all spring, who knows. If his health holds up, he should at least have a AAA job, and would bet he'd see MLB sometime this year.

Wonder who DD was pulling for when Chris faced Shelby, Chris's team with tying and go ahead runs on 2nd and 3rd, two outs, getting late, looking for first win of ST. Cards prize prospect in debut pitched himself into trouble, trying to bare down, was a high school kid a few months ago. We all know DD was praying for a screamer into the palm trees.

Albert and Matt must be pulling muscles carrying around those fat wallets. I was surprised Craig came to camp in muscle pulling shape, but sounds like he's trying to make up for it.

I was glad to hear Wainy admit he wasn't mentally prepared to pitch yesterday, and even gladder to hear TLR say that is unaccepable in an elite player.

Too bad about Kinney, probably will not end well for him. Another step closer to seeing Smoltz or Looper back. They should both be getting cheap and flexible as to role about now.

Looking at the rest of the unsigned free agent pitcher list is scary.

Its just a descriptive analogy BB. Jumbo isn't a prairie dog.

How about that Alan Craig............... They put Stavi in the hot seat. If he doesn't produce here. He will go in the next cut.......or worse. The Colby/ Ludwick relationship is more significant. If Colby stays hot, he will hit 5th.

You are getting your symbology and your geography in a tangle Westy. Prairie dogs are considered varmints in Eastern Montana, and routinely evicted or worse. But, as I understand it, you would have Jumbo a model citizen in those environs. The local sage even.

When's he going to draft the next Albert? Also, would like his comments on how he thinks he will use the sportvision f/x info, and how it will be used by the major and minor league coaching staffs, and whether he thinks it will in any way trikle down to the ordinary fan level some how.

A clip of Colby's HR is on the MLB highlight site RC.

The true sign of a functioning sanctuary is it utility. Jumbo has crossed the gulf between the Samuel Longhorn quietude and reverence , returning to a Jumbo we are more accustomed too, in a very short period of time. His renewed interpretation of the function of the board, is a representation of his need for reinforcement and peer group recognition surrounding his declaration of a danger signal or perceived threat. This is most often found as a behavior in prairie dog colonies I believe. The measurement of qualitative differentials then would represent the actual size and structure of Jumbos functioning sanctuary. (in this case a short run and a head first entry into a small burrow or prairie dog hole as it were).

(A cut and paste from WC's notes)

I expect to be sitting down with Jeff on more general topics later this week. If folks have any questions they'd like answered, feel free to offer them up.

In the Globe article that talks about this, Luhnow is quoted a couple times talking about how important scouts are, player makeup, etc. That was good to hear from him. Were those things he said for the occasion of Rigoli being named to the Scouts HOF, or past quotes?

I saw Colby's homer on the news, that was one of the nicest looking swings I've seen. I was watching a couple St. Louisans boxing on HBO the other night, I know the father of the cruiserweight kid who won. That swing reminded me of the kid's left jab that goes from just standing there to a pop right in the kisser in a flash.

What you write about here is the large majority of cardinals fans in a nutshell, God love em. I like reading WC just because he adds a little black to a sea of cardinal.

I see JumBeau Shrimp as the GOD like figure sitting up high, the halo shining brightly, seeing only good and then there is WC sitting in the shadows, wearing his devil horns who speaks on conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory including everything from baseball conspiracies to political party factoids, Poetry, all the way down to "Opera for $200 Alex".
5 spring at bats and Pujols is washed up owing to mental flaws. Perfectly understandable that Cards fans would react poorly to such drivel.
I had real hope this was going to be the season Westie was going to fight through his own daunting mental challenges and have a break-through by making occasional sense. Its still early. He may still get it together. But he's off to an ice-cold start and the early indicators are not auspicious. Eat lots of fish Westie.

Is Albert going to pick a reentry point? If I'm not mistaken, he is struggling with his personal crisis again. Fear of being frighted is a tenacious feedback mechanism. I see signs that this is possible.
I have rarely seen this phenomena so evident in sports. Of course it is there, but Albert's unique self image and openness in expressing his religious convictions make it very apparent.

I'm pointing this out again, as I did when it started last year, because it is so fascinating to watch. These emotional thresholds or metanoia that Albert is used to enjoying or crossing, are now becoming impediments, apparently equivalent to the intensity in which they are utilized by the spiritual needs of the individual. Albert has blended sports and religion as few athletes have in my experience. He may need some help in this. These things most often manifest themselves in a physical injury in my experience.

Would one of our Veb readers kindly reprint this over there as a gift and reminder from the Opera Card.

It seems to be working RC. He is removing so many pitch options by threatening to resolve their vulnerabilities with a shorter stroke, that he is seeing some opportunities to turn and crank. That's how it works. Before long he is going to be taking some tremendous cuts at 3/1 and 2/0 pitches with no fear. He will hit more HR's on those counts.

I've only seen him one game, but I chuckled when he snuck his hands back to their old position during the wind up. That's how you do it. If he is moving in the box, they will plunk him but having multiple hand position to solve different counts and expected locations is completely acceptable. To me it shows your thinking, not guessing.

To me a great hitter isn't afraid to start a swing in a certain location on a hitter advantage count. The rule is, win time for yourself to adjust, but don't distort your swing too much in search of just any contact. So many guys are afraid to just swing and miss. That isn't nearly as bad as the weak ground balls and foul pops that haunt the chasers. You have to believe you can beat that pitchers strikeout pitch. Knowing and trusting in that, you can take some titanic stokes that make baseball tonight highlights. Enough of those and he will be asking you to move your car out of the garage so he can park his Lamborghini out of the weather when he comes home.

That's the common wisdom, RC, but I'm not so sure. Schu, Brendan and Lopez could, should, all be .300 hitters this year. It would be tempting to pile em up ahead of AP, MH, CR, RL. At least now and then.

I'd like to personally see Albert hitting in the 4 spot myself Bling but I don't figure to see it happen anytime in the near future.

Well WC,

this is the first year in the last 3 where someone hasn't tried to recreate the wheel in regards to Colby. I believe Colby to be as determined as ever to use the entire field. He continues to speak highly of Mark and how much Mark's approach to hitting differs from Hal's. They are trying to keep the bat in the zone longer. Its early but he has shown improvement to this point. We'll see how the spring unfolds and see if he continues to develop his approach.

No BB. As RC pointed out, Jumbo has never been so beautiful, well mannered and such. He is speaking the truth as best he can understand and explore his own nature. As Depak would point out, its almost inevitable that Jumbo contains some of the very atoms that constituted the physical body of Samuel Longhorn Clemens.

RC, I like what Colby is up to.

I don't know about that John Birch Society tag Westy, just as likely Ethical Society IMO. Could as easily be Nature Church of Enlightenment or Rogue River Fellowship (or one of your brethren in the Mainland Church of the Perfect Wave), no matter, Californians stand out in a crowd.

You guys should get together. Maybe a weekend camping up along the Shasta River. Look for Bigfoots or something. Bring a web-cam. It would go viral.

The article about the analytics conference mentioned the Sportvision F/X thing. I first read about it in Popular Science a while back. Abbamondi is on top of it I guess. It seems like it will eventually make umpires obsolete.

Gore's Global Warming narrative is in keeping with a religion. Such a story would appeal to the resident shaman. Catastrophes will be wreaked upon the Earth, unless the faithful change their evil ways and invent clean energies and jobs that are green, sayeth the preacher.
There are resemblences to the PED narrative. Newfangled molecules are aruining the national pastime, faux heroes must repent their evil ways, lest innocent youths be led to addiction and ruin, while the purity of the Hall of Fame itself is threatened. Fortunately our culture is saved by turning back to the good books of Mark Twain, and all ends happily.

Not sure why the new umpiring supervisors would give up union protection given the situation. Maybe supervising is less stressful or less travel (doubt it) but with the precedent of making them scapegoats seems like a questionable move.

Pen sucks. Put Hill and K-Mac both in it. Pitch the kid on a short leash and use these other guys as possible long men or 5th inning salvage divers. This team has to start coming from behind. That's the best hope to encourage pitchers to grind.

Westy, my guess is you're off by 1000 miles. You could probably hit Jumbos house with a rock from your back porch.

Thanks for the info. I'm not thinking Hawk will have a meltdown or anything. Rather, I'm considering what might happen if McClellan goes into the rotation. Somebody might step up to be that 5th-6th inning type guy who comes in throwing strikes and keeping the ball in the park. Like the guy we didn't really have last year.

But if not, Mo might package a Lugo and a Hawk in exchange for a guy. I'm not sure that a team would want to take a guy who really hasn't established himself but is out of options. But the rest of our RHRP's either can't be counted on to throw strikes or to keep the ball in the park. We'll see. Be nice if Hawk ends up filling that role. Mo says he'll be patient.

Westie, I am lucky to be able to crtically interpret on my own behalf. I do not need to be advised whether an author is right wing or left wing or no wing. It does not matter. Science is not owned by any political affiliation. Global Warming is caputski and will eventually disappear from the popular lexicon.
Another prediction: Mark Twain was a great guy and will be remembered, as long as there are folks who read the English language. Its great to be able to pinch-hit a Mark like McGwire with a greater Mark like Twain.

Jumbo, the people that are good at measuring things are also critically aware of the limitation and scope of what they do and can measure. And they are very concerned.

People are talking about the salmon crisis out on the coast Jumbo. Ask Weyerhauser where the salmon went. After 30 years of clear cutting they say, eat trout. Stick to baseball Jumbo.

Option information is held fairly closely. Not sure why. Yes, Hawksworth is out of options.

I don't often go to that board as the personality of it does not fit me, but s.f. over there is very knowledgeable. A quick glance of his information tells me most of the important ones are accurate, but there are a few minor differences from what I was told by the club and what I have compiled over the years.

The reason I didn't answer bb quickly is that I have a story all ready on both options and outrighting that will go up on the main site, probably Tuesday. Outrighting has to do with removal from the 40-man roster, which is allowed at most once without risking losing the player. It is another important factor to consider.

Here is the article to which I referred, about the collapse of the Global Warming myth. It will take a while to collapse politically, since it had many adherents. But once Obama tried to advance the cause, this provided incentive for critical examination of the underlying science. This is what has utterly collapsed for many people since November. Even conservatives had thought there had to be something to it; now they do not.

Jumbo and Westy, this is one of my favorite Al Gore related articles. I don't take much interest in global warming, but politician windbaggery is something else. It's a very short read.

Westie, I have been following the demise of the Warming myth. I understand how little it was premised upon. The American Spectator published a nice article. The mainstream media in the US has not reported the story, much like the National Inquirer landed the story about presidential aspirant John Edwards and Rielle Hunter. Should you believe everything reported in the Inquirer? No. But the squalid Edwards affair turned out to be true. The truth sometimes has a way of coming out.

Above, I admonished Westy not to jump the gun on Luddy. Arguing that he would come around to letting MM help him. I hadn't realized MM has already 'fixed' Luddy's swing. Yikes.

Here is Luddy telling all about it.

They're along ways from doing anything with Hawksworth. Delescalo was 3 for 4 and clutch, so he had to go because he further buried Gotay. Tony is a fool for hitting Yadi behind Holiday. 29 teams will be pitching around Holiday just to explore the double play stats. I would.

Jumbo................. there is no such thing as a conservative intellectual. There are some very bright people who prey on weak minds for profit and influence in a free and "democratic" society. That's simply the process of natural selection at work...................................... I am convince that you are not one of those people.

There are a number of aristocratic folks about these days Jumbo that are convinced that this country was always intend to be a republic, not a democracy. BD is one of them. They are aware of the limitations related to religious beliefs and democratic institutions when it comes to regulating population and reproductive privilege. In their own sordid way, they are prepared to join forces with the natural planetary regulations on species selectivity and all the variables surrounding living in a balanced ecosystem.................... So confident are they in their roll in this realization to our future society, that they have endeavored to create superstition and a false sense of security amongst the weak and vulnerable so that the cull might be more graceful than past attempts. in this great tradition of mind manipulations first pioneered by the Romans some days past, they will xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx the American Spectator right to your door.

Stuff that was obvous, and at the forefront of memory, last summer, seems to fade in and out a little bit now. Or gets mixed in with other stuff. My memory isn't what it once was, nor my attention span. But even years ago I wasn't one to commit to permanent memory all the details surrounding trades. It can be useful to have a capsule presented to bring it back into focus. I can appreciate that some would find it tedious though.

I wonder if Al ever got rid of the energy sucking, carbon spewing family estate with sprawling mansion, fleet of SUV's, heated pool, etc. That was so funny, while he was lecturing us.

Carioca, there is an accessible essay on the catstrophic collapse of the Global Warmists in the March 15th edition of the American Spectator, the edition featuring an artistic drawing of Al Gore in his birthday suit. You should be able to see it on-line. The abrupt collapse of this long-running farce is heartening in many ways.

It seems ok to state the obvious, provided defensible.

You should be able to see it on-line. The abrupt collapse of this long-running farce is heartening in many ways.

I like Jumbo better than Beau. Jumbo actually contributes thought out posts. Beau simply repeats the obvious. Today Beau is posting.

Since a ML team only has so much adsorption capacity for young players, it makes some sense to package quantity for quality. Peterson, Morty, and Wallace were ok prospects, but if we had enough where we could give some up. Whereas Freese can play a premium defensive position, Wallace was not promising there. While Perez and Todd are very nice, they are relievers, and as such a bit less valuable than if starting pitchers. Mortenesen has some potential, but so do Ottavino, Walters, Lynn, and Garcia, so Morty was dispensable.

The deals last summer were a bit different. We had to overpay to get DeRosa, after injuries to Glaus and Freese. We needed DeRosa and had to give up a lot to the Indians in Perez and Todd, who should succeed in the majors.
The Holliday deal was different in terms of being part of a long term financial overture, followed by the 7 year deal. Mortensen and Peterson seem decent prospects, but non-essential; you can only make use of so many prospects at a time. Wallace seems like a better Daric Barton, a lefty hitter best at 1B. He too was inessential. So we gave up about 18 years of control over plausible prospects, but sometimes you have to shell out money and future players to get star hitter, needed now, as the Cards view Holliday.

Nut, you will admit then that if he does make the team, the grassy knoll was well populated!

I didn't say he couldn't blow it. All he has to do is hit and stay out of trouble..

If those four guys end up on the team at the end of the season, hopefully postseason roster, that would be an impressive haul. Following on Ryan and Rasmus and the young pitchers that came up. And at the WWU Mo said to look at AA, so maybe the pipeline will not dry up.

What if Mo and Luhnow actually know what they are doing, and the 'tradeing away the farm' last year was really just getting return for guys that were assessed as mostly just AAAA, marginal MLB players clogging up the pipeline.

Looking at Brian's pre-camp system matrix, at Memphis there are Garcia, Walters, Ottavino, Parise, Salas, Anderson, Hamilton, Jay, Craig, Stavinoha, and Robinson, plus up from AAA Freese and Greene. I like these guys to various degrees. The Memphis squad was relatively young among AAA teams last year. Some of these guys could get hot in 2010 and contribute in the majors. Its nice to have them within the system.
Likewise at AA there are Additon, Dickson, Mulligan, Samuel, Sanchez, Hill and Cruz the converted catchers, Luna, Kozma, Jones, Henley. Hard to say any are surefire future major leaguers, but also hard to say none can ever contribute in the majors in due course. If one does not have monster prospects, its still useful to have a group of possibilities.

Nut, you have to understand Westie's conspiracy theories (this one a combination of racial and their ability to re-sign Pujols (even though he says they will trade him mid year))

Time (ETA) is a meaningful way to look at minor leaguers. These four are certainly near-time candidates. Tyler Greene did not make the Top 100 of Mr. Gray, but is another. The Cards seem pretty well stocked at AA/AAA and thats a good thing.

There seem common systemic ways that some players at AAA are under-appreciated. They may have played too long in the minors to be seen as exciting or too old to make a ML debut or have gotten low signing bonuses. Jamie Garcia has been low profile because of a TJ operation, but seems restored.

That says more money is being placed on the Mets to win 89 or fewer. Not surprising. Whoever established that line in the first place is either misinformed or a huge NY fan or both. It now means you can win $125 for betting $100 on the over, but have to lay out $165 for a chance to win $100 on the under.

I'm not a gambler, so I may have this wrong. If you take the over on the Mets, you get $115 if they win 90 or more, and you lose $100 if they win 89 or less? I can't believe they are getting any action on that.
