Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinals Minor League Spring Training Notebook: 03/25/17

Welcome back to our ninth year of providing results and much more from St. Louis Cardinals minor league spring training games here at The Cardinal Nation Blog. This year, I am joined in these recaps by TCN writer Derek Shore.

Following are the highlights from the Cardinals minor league games held on Friday against the Marlins, with all five games scheduled on the St. Louis side of the Jupiter complex.

For the second straight day, the Cardinals managed only one win as the clubs went a collective 1-3-1. Peoria2 picked up the victory and Springfield tied. Overall, the system is 13-20-2 in 2016, including 10-17-2 versus outside competition.

Once again this spring, Cardinals Baseball Operations Coordinator for Player Development Tony Ferreira shares highlights from minor league spring training contests.

The raw data is his, but the comments and awards are mine. However, be aware that only minimal pitching and hitting results are being shared – what you see here. So to find those struggling, you will have to look for names missing or make some guesses.

Remember these working team assignments are fluid by the day. In addition, another 16 players have yet to be cut from Major League camp.

When players are members of The Cardinal Nation Top 50 Prospect List for 2017, their rankings are noted.

Flaherty-200_1498Saturday’s Pitcher of the Day: Jack Flaherty, Springfield

There seems little to no doubt that the talented right-hander, who spent all of 2016 with Palm Beach, is ready for Double-A. It is easy to forget that Flaherty will pitch all this coming season at the age of 21.

Saturday’s Hitter of the Day: Carlos Rodriguez, Peoria2

With three RBI on Saturday, the 20-year-old Venezuelan first baseman was an easy choice. However, we should not expect Rodriguez to single-handedly fix the power shortage in the system, as the right-handed batter has just six home runs in 460 career plate appearances to date. He will likely continue to work on his game in extended spring training.

Also exclusively for TCN members is my annual pre-camp series in which I predict the opening rosters for all four full-season minor league affiliates and explain why. The St. Louis roster prediction article is free for all readers. Memphis was posted Friday with Springfield Saturday and Palm Beach coming on Sunday morning.
