Cardinals Organization Roster Matrix: 2016-2017 Off-Season

NOTE: As of 03/13/17, this version of the roster matrix is no longer current. It reflects the changes during the 2016-2017 off-season. It should now be considered a historical reference document. For the active roster matrix for 2017 spring training, click here.

With the completion of the 2016 World Series and the opening of the free agent season – it is time for another refresh of the Roster Matrix.

matrix-grid-crop-200This version will reflect the changes made from the start of the 2016-2017 off-season until spring training. The previous matrix reflects the rosters as they evolved during the 2016 short season through the post-season.

If you are new to the blog and not familiar with the Cardinals organization roster matrix, here is quick summary:

As the 2016 season ended, the St. Louis Cardinals had 301 players under contract from top to bottom, including 38 players on the 40-man roster and four players on the 60-day disabled list. The latter are called out in bold. The matrix places each of them at his assigned level in the system as well as by position. It is kept updated daily or as transactions occur.

Free agents are noted separately and not included in the organization totals until official.

Nowhere else will you find this current and comprehensive single-page view of the entire Cardinals organization – plus multiple years of history.

(Do not be concerned about the order of the players’ names within position. It has no relative significance.)

I think Hazelbaker was claimed by the Diamondbacks, not the Rangers.

  2. lrcardinal says:

    Hi Brian,

Great job on keeping these rosters up to date! Haven’t found any other teams with this type of coverage! I noticed Mateo still on the Johnson City Roster.

    Thanks,
    Larry Cardinal

  3. blingboy says:

PB could put together a rotation out of that.

  4. JumboShrimp says:

We signed southpaw Nelson Prada out of Venezuela. May be son of minor league manager of same name with Phillies.

  5. jlshetler says:

Last year the first Spring Training game was on 03/02. On 01/20 we got the NRI list and the STEP list. On 01/28 we got the uniform number assignments.

This year the first Spring Training game is on 02/25. But we didn’t get the NRI list until 02/02 and we still don’t have the STEP list or uniform number assignments.

Does it seem to anybody else that they are running very late this year? And if so, do we have any idea why?

    -Joe

    • Brian Walton says:

Yes, information is later this year. Instead of a press release for the NRIs as in the past, the info was first disclosed by Jen Langosch on MLB.com. The detailed roster was not included. The organization made a change regarding STEP and will not release the names until camp is close. Reasons why were not shared.

      • jlshetler says:

Brian, thanks for the updates. I know I’m getting impatient as things get close, and I imagine many other fans are too. Looking forward to beer, peanuts, and prospects.

  6. jlshetler says:

Hello Brian and all, I have a few questions on the DSL roster part of this matrix:

    (1) You have two players here I can’t find on that team’s roster link: pitcher Moreno (should it be Morena?) and catcher Longa. I’m looking for home towns and DOBs on them but am having trouble.

    (2) I’m also not finding hometowns for Roy García or Esequiel Delgado anywhere on-line… can someone help?

    (3) It also looks like you have “Periera” for “Pereira.”

    • Brian Walton says:

      1) Click on the DSL roster link above and change the year to 2017 in the selection box to find both players. (I will publish a new matrix in a few days with direct 2017 roster links.) However, Scout’s system does not like to display home towns. I have Longa’s recorded (Caracas, Venezuela) but not Moreno’s yet. Will add it later this spring.

      2) Garcia is from Nagua, Dominican Republic; Delgado’s home is San Cristobal, DR.

      3) As they say, “i before e, except in Pereira.” Thanks for paying ultra-attention!.

      • jlshetler says:

Brian, thanks so much for the tip on changing the roster date. It is amusing that they erroneously entered both Moreno and Longa’s birth years as 1900 instead of 2000! They are of course 16, not 116-years old…

Both this roster and your matrix has “José Moreno,” however your transaction chronology (see 2/3) has his name as “Morena.” Google News searches give hits both ways. This could be involved in the missing hometown?
