Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinals Minors Talk on InsideSTL Radio 920

On Monday morning, I joined host Randy Moehlman on The Mole Hole show, on InsideStLcom and CBS Sports Radio 920 in St. Louis.

The subject was the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system, and specifically some of its top prospects. After covering the Zach Duke-Charlie Tilson trade and the obligatory discussion about Alex Reyes and Carson Kelly, we moved on to a number of other prospects of note, primarily pitchers.

You can listen in here.

Mad Mike does some things well. He does pretty good interviews. He understands why hitters struggle, partly because himself a bad hitter. He is probably good at talking with players.

One thing he is not good at is management of relief pitchers. He will probably never learn this. The cards have given him good players, so he is spoiled by what success the team has had since 2012.

Maybe mike could be moved to the broadcast booth?

It would be hard for anyone to follow TLR.

One problem with Mike is he is not an awful manager. He has virtues. It’s hard to can him.

But another problem with Mike is he probably costs five games per year owing to poor decisions during games. He provides drag, more than lift.

Last nights game annoyed me. A closer should be saved to close games. If used in the 8th, a bold move, a smart manager then entrusts the closing role to another. A manager has to have self discipline to share out the workload, not just ride one pitcher. Oh did not lose last nights game, Mike did owing to lack of self discipline.

Mike is only under contract thru 2017. If we let him go this fall, its like a separation payment. Nice for everyone.

I hope Mo is not holding onto Mike just to have a fall guy, whom he can fire when he needs to blame somebody. Hire a real manager and fire him if you have to.
