Carpenter Chasing Musial’s Four-Hit Record

Briefly sidelined last May for “extreme fatigue”, this May Matt Carpenter then missed three St. Louis Cardinals contests late last week for the birth of his first child.

Since his return, the third baseman has been on fire at the plate. His most recent exploits include four hits in each of his last two games, including a single, double and two triples on Tuesday evening at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

While watching Carpenter go for his third consecutive four-hit game on Wednesday afternoon, you will likely hear often that he would tie the record of three consecutive four-hit outings, set by Hall of Famer Stan Musial in three games over two days in August 1946.

Along with Carpenter, Musial also appears twice among the 26 occurrences of two consecutive four-hit games, doing it in both 1947 and 1948. Prior to Carpenter, the last Cardinal do have the two big games was Jim Edmonds in 2003.

Scanning the list below, a number of Hall of Famers stand out. One name I am very surprised to not see is Albert Pujols.

  1. JumboShrimp says:

Matt Holliday has been lifting his batting average, as has Carpenter. This is important. These two all stars are vital cogs for this team. The better they are, the better for everyone. They provide an example for others to rally around

  2. JumboShrimp says:

The Birds are on pace for 220 home runs in a season, third most in team history.
They have double the number of last year after 38 games, despite losing Reynolds after last season.
    How?
Hazelbaker and Gyrko add muscle off the bench.
Matheny is doing a good job dividing up the workload.
    Diaz and Piscotty are adds.
Holliday and Adams are less injured.
Moss Walks, Ks, and homers. Effectively bad and fun.

I bet the Memphis club has the highest priced second baseman in the PCL.

Wong can get back on track with regular play. Good for him to work out the kinks at AAA. It’s nice to have the depth to be able to stash him at Memphis.
