Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Book Review: If These Walls Could Talk: St. Louis Cardinals

Looking for a great Father’s Day gift for your special St. Louis Cardinals fan Dad? You may even want to consider this one for yourself.

Last month, the new book from veteran sportswriter Stan McNeal became available. If These Walls Could Talk: Stories from the St. Louis Cardinals Dugout, Locker Room and Pressbox is published by Triumph Books, ISBN 9781600789342. Available at local bookstores as well as online sellers such as Amazon.com, its list price is a very reasonable $14.95.

The 222-page book is organized by seasons, from 2014 back through 2011. Key Cardinals newsmakers and subplots are remembered in a series of 10 vignettes per year. The book closes with stories about a number of Cardinals legends, including Bob Gibson, George Kissell and Stan Musial.

If you are like me, you will recall a number of these events, but the book again brings them to life and in greater depth, enhanced by a large number of direct quotes. It offers a fun read as well as serves as a reference document chronicling four of the most exciting seasons in the history of one of the game’s most successful franchises.

I’ve grown to know and respect Stan while periodically working alongside him as he covers the Cardinals for FOX Sports Midwest. Before that, the Chesterfield, Missouri resident wrote for newspapers in San Diego and Florida and was with The Sporting News for 13 years as national baseball writer and managing editor.
