Cardinals Organization Roster Matrix: 2015 Regular Season

NOTE: As of 6/24/15, this version of the roster matrix is no longer current. It reflects the changes from the start of the 2015 regular season until the opening of the 2015 short season. It should now be considered a historical reference document. For the active roster matrix for 2015 short season, click here.

With the April 9 Opening Day for the 2015 minor league season, it is time for another refresh of the St. Louis Cardinals system roster matrix. This version will reflect the changes made from the start of the 2015 regular season until after the draft and the start of short-season play in late June. The previous matrix reflects the rosters as they evolved during 2015 spring training.

If you are new to the blog and not familiar with the Cardinals organization roster matrix, here is quick summary:

As the 2015 season opened, the St. Louis Cardinals had 256 players under contract from top to bottom, including a full 40-man roster. The latter are called out in bold. The matrix places each of the 255 at his assigned level in the system as well as by position. It is kept updated daily or as transactions occur.

Nowhere else will you find this current and comprehensive single-page view of the entire Cardinals organization plus multiple years of history.

Do not be concerned about the order of the players’ names within position. It has no relative significance.

  1. Lou Schuler says:

Brian, any idea why Vaughn Bryan isn’t on a full-season roster? He held his own at Peoria last year, so it seems odd that he’s been demoted.

Sorry if it’s already been discussed here and I missed it, and thanks in advance for whatever insights you have.

    • Brian Walton says:

Lou, I was also surprised, but have no inside information. Bryan isn’t a top 10 talent in the system like that guy from BP asserted last spring, but a step backward did not seem likely, either. Bryan was playing in games during spring training, so I have no reason to suspect an injury is behind it.

Perhaps he lost his initial shot to return to Peoria with the aggressive promotion of Sierra. Blake Drake’s emergence also contributed to the outfield logjam. Like Bryan, Kenny Peoples-Walls is another caught in that gap.

      • JumboShrimp says:

Bryan had an OPS 707 at Peoria, below average for RF, where he had to play, given McElroy in CF.
Bryan hits the ball harder than McElroy, but is less of a stealer and might be a lesser defender in CF.
If Sierra has problems making the huge jump from the Gulf Coast, Bryan could play CF for Peoria. Or if Wick flops at Palm Beach, Bryan could backfill.

      • Lou Schuler says:

        Thanks Brian!

Interesting comparison between VB and KPW. Bryan managed a 103 wRC+ in a full season for Peoria, which isn’t earth-shattering (especially given the expectations created by that BP article you mentioned). But it does suggest he was a league-average player at a league-average age. (Actually, a half-year younger than average.)

KPW, on the other hand, had a 57 wRC+, meaning he was 43% below league average. He’s a few months younger than Bryan, but also started his pro career 2 years sooner, with a bigger bonus and higher expectations.

I know it’s hard to project anyone, but I’ve often wondered if the hardest guys to project are the ones drafted primarily for their athletic upside. For every Billy Hamilton, it seems you have to go through a whole lot of Daryl Joneses.

    • blingboy says:

I know nothing about Bryan, but the situation suggests to me that he is judged to have neither a CF glove nor a corner OF bat.

  2. lrcardinal says:

    Hi Brian,

Going through the Transaction Logs, I noticed 4 Releases that I had not previously noticed. From the State College Spikes, C Charlie Neil and RHP Brandon Lee were released on 5/29 and 5/30 respectively. From the Johnson City Cardinals, SS Christian Muscarello and RF Devante Lacy were released on 6/1/2015.

  3. blingboy says:

I’m getting that tingly feeling I have come to recognize all too well.

I picture Our Hero barricaded in his closet sized office, waist deep in spreadsheets and pizza boxes, unshaven, unkempt and bathed in the eerie green light of multiple mid 80s era monitors, oblivious to his raw and bloody fingertips as he furiously pounds out the new Matrix.

Go man, go! Type like the wind!
