Though football is over for another season, baseball continues, with Monday’s opening of the Serie del Caribe or Caribbean Series. The annual event, held this year in San Juan, Puerto Rico, will run from February 2-8, with all games on ESPN Deportes and WatchESPN.
With the addition of Cuba, five teams are participating. The other four clubs all have connections to the St. Louis Cardinals, either past or present. (Click on highlighted team names below to view full rosters.)
The home team representing Puerto Rico (Cangrejeros de San Juan) has a high concentration of former Cardinals in pitchers Joel Pineiro and J.C. Romero plus ex-minor leaguers Tyler Herron and Ruben Gotay. The only active member of the organization playing in the Serie del Caribe is the reigning Puerto Rico League MVP, outfielder Anthony Garcia.
No St. Louis organization players are on Venezuela’s active roster, but the organization is represented. Peoria Chiefs pitching coach Dernier Orozco is the bullpen coach for Caribes de Anzoátegui.
Following the Series’ opening ceremonies Monday evening, Puerto Rico takes on Venezuela at 6:30 p.m. ET. (Cuba and Mexico are playing in the opener on Monday afternoon, the game I am watching as I type this.)
Of course, the Cuban team (Pinar del Río) is self-contained.
