Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Interview: Stan Musial Biographer Joseph Stanton

I have read a number of Stan Musial biographies in the past and no matter how many of them I encounter, I learn new information each time.

So it was, when only recently I became aware of Stan Musial: A Biography (part of the Baseball’s All-Time Greatest Hitters series). Author Joseph Stanton actually penned his book in the mid-2000s, but his publisher aimed the book at the library market, rather than bookstores.

As a result, I had missed it the first time around, but am glad I discovered it now.

In just 164 pages, Stanton tells Musial’s life story in a detailed, yet fast-moving and entertaining pace. As one would expect from a Ph.D., this well-researched endeavor is fully footnoted with a detailed bibliography, yet avoids the heavy tone of a scholarly work.

In the following 25-minute exclusive interview, the author discusses his long-time interest in Musial and offers a series of remembrances of the late Cardinals star as covered in the book.

I snagged a copy of Mike’s book. Signed “Mike Matheney John 3:16”.

My son and his son wanted to look at it so I will not be able to read it for a while. I’ll report in once I do. I’m sure everyone will be on the edge of their seat.
