First reported by the Houston Chronicle, the Houston Astros have lured away another member of the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Area scout Charlie Gonzalez has agreed to become a special assistant to Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow.
With the Cardinals, Gonzalez worked on the amateur side under scouting director Dan Kantrovitz. Based in Florida, Gonzalez had a hand in signing many of the Cardinals’ talents out of the Sunshine State, including current major leaguers Kevin Siegrist and Jon Jay.
Just a few weeks ago during Cardinals instructional league camp, I caught up with Charlie. Just like a proud papa, he made sure he updated me on the progress made this season by a number of his discoveries still in the minor leagues.
Since leaving St. Louis almost three years ago, Luhnow has hired at least 18 former Cardinals, including players, coaches and front office personnel. The most recent prior to Gonzalez was Brent Strom, promoted from Cardinals minor league pitching coordinator to Houston’s major league pitching coach. Others include Sig Mejdal, analytics lead, Mike Elias, head of amateur scouting and minor league pitching coordinator Dyar Miller.
