Cardinal Talk: KXnO FOX Sports Radio: Sorting Out the Possibilities

Weekly St. Louis Cardinals-focused chat on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines.

As is the case each Friday prior to the St. Louis Cardinals pregame show, I joined Ken Miller on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines in our weekly series to discuss the St. Louis Cardinals.

This week, we discussed the myriad of possibilities facing the Cardinals over the next week as the club could play as few as three or as many as five games before the National League Division Series gets underway on Friday.

Once again in 2014, Cardinals followers in central Iowa are able to catch St. Louis Cardinals radio broadcasts on KXnO as well as my regular segment each week throughout the season, either over the air or via streaming. Or, if you miss it live, you can always catch the replay right here at The Cardinal Nation blog.

Madcap Mike dodged a bullet last night, yikes.

    • blingboy says:

Mo could trade him to TLR and he could switch dugouts in the middle of the game.

      • JumboShrimp says:

Would not be surprised to see TLR hire Jose Oquendo as manager of the Diamondbacks.
Oquendo has paid dues, been loyal, and is TLR trained.

        • JumboShrimp says:

Yesterday was a big game. Why would Mad Mike start Mark Ellis who has had a horrible season, averaging .180? Why not Kozma instead?
Why play matchups at 2B, but then not start Bourjos in CF? Why not start Molina at 1B? Or why not play Scruggs during September so he is ready to play 1B, a season long weakness against lefties? This is not such a high scoring team that it could afford to squander Scruggs.
When a player himself, Matheny was a crummy hitter. Hes not much better at figuring out how to put hitters in the lineup.

          • Brian Walton says:

Coming into the night, Ellis was 10-for-24, including four home runs against Miley in his career. That was the old Ellis.

            • JumboShrimp says:

Because Ellis retired for the 2014 season, its hard to understand why Mo keeps him on an active duty roster.

            • crdswmn says:

I do not understand what goes on in MM’s mind when he makes out lineups. Does he just look at those old, irrelevant, small sample size pitcher v batter match ups? Does he consider anything else? Does he look at splits? Does he know that Wong hits lefties better than righties? Does he know that Adams is terrible against lefties? Either he doesn’t, when he should, or he does and he ignores it for less relevant data or no data at all.

I just have difficulty fathoming how he can be so clueless and inept.

        • Brian Walton says:

Why would TLR hire a new GM in Dave Stewart if he was picking the next manager himself? Either way, I highly doubt it will be Oquendo.

  2. Bw52 says:

last night Neshek and tonite Maness.Probably worst outing of the season Maness.Time for the offense to waKe up instead of acting like little leaguers.

  3. Bw52 says:

Cards need the good Wainwright Sunday, not the bad one.Since the offense sucks .AW will need to be close to perfect to stand a chance of winning.

  4. JumboShrimp says:

Since start of August, Maness has thrown 26.1 innings. During the same time, Jason Motte has contributed 4 innings.

  5. JumboShrimp says:

Five game first round series. Underdogs welcome short series.

  6. Bw52 says:

Four days to get everyone well and free of the bug and find a cure for what ails the pitiful offense.Even the B team only scored ONE run.Noodle bats won`t get you very far in the playoffs.

    • crdswmn says:

True, the odds aren’t great against LA without some better offense. Maybe the four days off will help. Get everyone over the sickness and get some rest.

I admit I don’t have as much optimism as I did this time last year. I hope the team surprises me.
