Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinal Talk: KXnO FOX Sports Radio: Making Hay at Home?

Weekly St. Louis Cardinals-focused chat on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines.

As is the case each Friday prior to the St. Louis Cardinals pregame show, I joined Ken Miller and Jim Brinson on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines in our weekly series to discuss the St. Louis Cardinals.

We discussed the instant replay rule and the challenges it brings before getting into the aftermath of the Cardinals disappointing road trip and current homestand against San Diego and Cincinnati.

Once again in 2014, Cardinals followers in central Iowa are able to catch St. Louis Cardinals radio broadcasts on KXnO as well as my regular segment each week throughout the season, either over the air or via streaming. Or, if you miss it live, you can always catch the replay right here at The Cardinal Nation blog.

More passive aggressive digs at Oscar Taveras by Matheny?

Matheny called Robinson “a difference maker” in the game [Thursday]. “I’m not sure the turnout is the same if Shane isn’t out there,” said Matheny. “The catch he made in right field is one of the better (ones) we’ve seen this year.”

“He’s one of those players that I don’t think most people realize how talented he is.”

Matheny at times seems like he is in a power play between himself and Mo.Reading what crdswmn quoted Matheny about Robinson`s catch I wonder if it was a dig at Taveras and his work habits and hustle or just simply praise for Robinson or a shot at Mo about Taveras.Hellfire it probably was all three rolled into one.

Rosey almost gave it away.Wainwright struggles.I will say it outloud……….Wainwright has not been totally right since Allstar game.I wondered if Matheny was going to let Rosey screw up or finally grow a pair and bring in somebody else.Come on Matheny you got a 7 man bullpen………….surely you can figure out who to use.Choate is here for one reason and if he`s not doing his job then it`s time to change .

After Mike took Rosenthal out, Maness allowed two of the runners on base to score, and the third one would have but for the great defensive play. Then the fly out. Mike probably figures he would have done just as well leaving Rosey in there, and he might be right. Its not like there is a sure thing waiting in the wings. Some people say Neshek, but shifting a guy’s role can be hazardous. I’m not saying he should just trot Rosey out there all the time, just that whatever else he does has a good chance of blowing up in his face. Of course, if Rosey completely goes off a cliff like Mujica did, Mike will have to give somebody the job.

Some good things. One is Jon Jay, with an OBP above .370. Jay’s OPS is up to 775, anything above 700 is good for CF.
A good decision by Matheny was giving Matt Holliday the day off. He needed one and we will need him to contribute going forward.
A good decision to pull Rosenthal. That is hard for Matheny’s brain to accept. He needs to learn to rely on more than one guy. Today Matheny got lucky and came away with the W. This may help his brain and the pitching staff in future.
Not to shower too much praise on Mike’s brain, however. He stuck with Siegrist way too long yesterday, 35 pitches for 2 outs, insane.

Rosey going off a cliff is what everyone should be worried about. How many 1-2-3 innings has Rosey had in the last few weeks……….very few would be my guess. The whole bullpen is going to implode if things don`t change…………Rosey and Neshek already tired,Siegrist hurt again.Myp oint is you have 7 guys in the pen (6 really since Choate is mostly a LOOGY).Maybe Mo should consider another veteran bullpen guy in a trade.

I am worried about it. It would not surprise me at all. We will know real soon one way or another I think. He will either go off the cliff or continue stumbling along. I don’t think anyone expects him to suddenly go back to being lights out.

About all Mike can do would be rely on Freeman and Greenwood more. Neither has shown to be deserving of confidence, IMO. Martinez hasn’t exactly been successful out of the pen. Matheny would have to have a pair of brass ones to try any of them in late inning roles, not having shown dominance in lesser roles.

I have no idea what should be done, truthfully.
