Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinal Talk: KXnO FOX Sports Radio: Has Progress Stalled?

Weekly St. Louis Cardinals-focused chat on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines.

In our normal late-Friday time slot, I joined Ken Miller and Jim Brinson on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines in our weekly series to discuss the St. Louis Cardinals.

We discussed some of the potential factors in the Cardinals’ struggles during the second of two long home stands and looked ahead to next week’s interleague play. New callup Randal Grichuk came up as did top prospect outfielders George Springer, Gregory Polanco and of course, Oscar Taveras, too.

Once again in 2014, Cardinals followers in central Iowa are able to catch St. Louis Cardinals radio broadcasts on KXnO as well as my regular segment each week throughout the season, either over the air or via streaming. Or, if you miss it live, you can always catch the replay right here at The Cardinal Nation blog.

Strange tweet from Bernie last night:

    Bernie Miklasz @miklasz ·

Fascinating, uncharacteristic conduct by Mozeliak on Taveras callup. Organization so uptight. Increasingly bizarre team and season.

Bizarre ain’t the half of it as far as I am concerned. Only thing to do is sit back and watch it unfold.

I missed that observation. So many potential factors, or more likely a combination of them.

A factor of terrible clutch hitting.
        Poor use of the bench
        Poor use of the bullpen
        Offensive letdowns
        Poor usage of assets
        Big dollar bats failing repeatedly
        Mismanagement by Matheny
        Poor choice of the bench

While I agree with some of the laundry list, believe it or not, things could be worse. For instance, Freese could be batting cleanup, as he is in Anaheim. Happily, he is not.
Or, Jamie Garcia might not have been able to get back to the mound. Instead, he is throwing strikes and giving us a chance to win his starts.
Or, Oscar could have reinjured himself. Happily, he has not and will debut today.
Things could be better and they could be worse. We can still sort out some of the problems and improve.
