Spikes to don “Fresh Prince”-themed jerseys

Promotions are the life blood of a minor league baseball franchise, competing for fan attention and the family summer entertainment dollars.

Beyond the common fireworks nights and pooches in the park-type nights, a staple of team promotions is bringing in a special guest. Supporting cast members from beloved sitcoms of the past are perfect, because they are known, yet not too expensive.

The St. Louis Cardinals’ short-season Class-A affiliate in State College is planning such a night. On Sunday, June 29, “Carlton” from the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” will be making an appearance at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

To recognize Alfonso Ribeiro’s presence, the team will wear Fresh Prince-themed jerseys for the evening. To say they are eye-catching is an understatement.

It is all for a good cause. Following the Spikes’ contest against the Williamsport Crosscutters, the jerseys will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Children’s Miracle Network.

Congratulations to the Spikes for winning the ‘Obscure Celebrity” contest, and to the Mets who no longer have the ugliest jerseys in baseball.
