Bourjos among 10 worst starts through five Cardinals games

We were taught that “Bourjos” rhymes with “gorgeous,” but the outfielder’s hitting so far this season has been anything but handsome.

Batting seventh for the St. Louis Cardinals in Pittsburgh Saturday evening, centerfielder Peter Bourjos went 0-for-3 with a walk. In his first five games with his new club, the right-handed hitter is now 0-for-13 including six strikeouts.

These results are in contrast to his solid spring, when the 27-year-old posted a comfortable .324/.405/.459/.864 line in 37 at-bats over 24 Grapefruit League games.

Yet there is no doubt that currently, the off-season acquisition from the Angels is not hitting on all cylinders at the plate. In fact, Bourjos has also even been less than stellar in the field – his specialty.

While Bourjos’ start to the season with the bat has been undoubtedly weak, he is not alone.

With the help of researcher Tom Orf, we also offer the nine others in the last century to have at least 10 all hitless at-bats in St. Louis’ first five games of the season. Bourjos becomes the 10th name on this list.

St. Louis Cardinals, first five games of the season, 10 or more at-bats, no hits, since 1915

To follow in the footsteps of Yadier and Skip is very encouraging. Dal and Tyson, not so much.

It will be interesting to see how far the hitless streak can be extended. Striking out is a great tactic, because this eliminates the possibility of a bad hop single or an obvious error instead being ruled a hit.

Peralta only has 2 hits so far. However, they have been 2 run shots, so he is on pace for 60 HRs and 120 RBIs.
This is helpful for the introduction of a highly paid new guy. It is easy to be crushed under the weight of massive expectations. However, Peralta has already shown the fan base he is ready to take care of business. Good job.

I feel sorry for Bourjos. He is so happy to be a Cardinal and the fans are already crucifying him.

If he doesn’t have a thick skin he better get one.

All ballplayers are well served to ignore the postings of fans. Back in 2006, we signed RF Juan Encarnacion to a 3 year deal. Fans raved at the Birdhouse about how awful he was. Encarnacion stayed true to his well established form, slugged 19 HRs and thereby helped us win a World Series. Few are ever good enough, for people who hope to go 162-0. Some want a team with 5 Gibsons, 5 Musials, 5 Pujols, 5 Hornsbys, and 5 Deans, all in their prime.

I am not too concerned with his offensive problems. He will probably end up hitting about like we expected.

More importantly, I am becoming concerned that his defense may prove to be something less than we were hoping. He is fast and can get to some balls that Jay could not, but that is not all there is to it. The bottom line is that he will have to worth it in the field or he is not going to be the starting CF very long.

Much ado about nothing. He will be fine.Give the guy some time to settle in.

Allen Craig is having a poor start. So everybody can get all worked up over him too.
