Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/27/14

Following are the highlights from the St. Louis Cardinals minor league games on Thursday, March 27.

It was a Mets day with a twist. The Cards’ Double-A and A-Advanced clubs played a level up as Las Vegas took on Springfield and Binghamton opposed Palm Beach at Jupiter. In addition, the Extended Spring Training club took on the Long Island Storm on the Roger Dean back fields. Peoria1 played up as well as they and State College/Peoria2 traveled to St. Lucie to play the St. Lucie Mets and Savannah.

Interestingly, all four road teams in the Mets-Cards series won. The two upper-level games went to New York, while St. Louis took the two lower-level contests. The extended club also won its game.

After the 3-2 day, the Cardinals’ clubs collective mark versus external competition this spring is 20-11-5 with their overall record 28-19-11.

In 2014, Cardinals baseball operations assistant Tony Ferreira is sharing highlights from minor league spring training contests. As always, the raw data is his, but the comments and awards are mine. Unfortunately, while all pitchers are accounted for, only some of the top hitters’ data is shared.

When players are members of The Cardinal Nation Top 40 for 2014, their rankings are noted (TCN).

Thursday’s hitter of the day: On a day of good hitting by the Cardinals, several stood out. Ronald Castillo homered again, singled and drove in three for Peoria, but even that was not quite enough. Outfielder Anthony Ray (pictured), playing for State College, had two singles, a home run and plated three, but even better, his homer was of the inside the park variety. Usually smiling anyway, Ray can’t keep from grinning from ear to ear about his big day, I imagine.

Thursday’s pitcher of the day: Pitching for State College, Nick Petree tossed four scoreless innings on just three hits and no walks. Even better, the 23-year-old right-hander from Missouri State fanned six. Petree posted a 1.62 ERA for the Spikes in 2013 and was The Cardinal Nation’s State College Starter of the Year.

It must be encouraging for a young player to have his photo featured on the Web as minor league hitter of the day! Good to be generous with positive publicity.

    • Brian Walton says:

It is especially fun when some of the less well-known players have a day on the field worthy of special recognition. We do the same on the main site during the season.

      • JumboShrimp says:

Scipio Spinks, one of the great names of yesteryear, obtained for LHP Jerry Reuss. A promising career curbed by a collision with catcher Johnny Bench resulting in knee injury.

Scipio spent two years at the very same high school as hitter of the day Anthony Ray. St Rita’s is a boys parochial high school on the southwest side of Chicago.
