Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/20/14

Following are the highlights from the St. Louis Cardinals minor league games on Thursday, March 20. Under another afternoon of beautiful, sunny skies, all five Cardinals minor league clubs made the walk back to the Kissell Quad.

On this camp day, Peoria 1 just worked out, with Peoria 2 facing Palm Beach and Springfield taking on Memphis. Due to pitching availability, these games were scheduled for six innings each.

Springfield came back in the final inning to tie and the upstart Peoria 2 club edged Palm Beach. There were some hits, but not too much scoring. Defense was key for the day, with big plays by Mike O’Neill, Jonathan Rodriguez and James Ramsey, among others. The Cardinals’ clubs are 8-7-2 versus external competition this spring and of course are .500 internally, at 4-4-2.

In 2014, Cardinals baseball operations assistant Tony Ferreira is sharing highlights from minor league spring training contests. As always, the raw data is his, but the comments and awards are mine. Unfortunately, while all pitchers are accounted for, only some of the top hitters’ data is shared.

When players are members of The Cardinal Nation Top 40 for 2014, their rankings are noted (TCN).

Thursday’s hitter of the day: Patrick Wisdom (pictured) reminded the assembled why he is a top prospect. The third baseman, The Cardinal Nation’s 15th-ranked player coming into the season, came up against lefty Tim Cooney with two on. His blast (on this very swing) struck the base of the left-field fence on the fly as both runners came home.

Thursday’s pitcher of the day: Kevin Herget isn’t well known, but the right-hander tossed two perfect innings with two strikeouts for Peoria 2. The 39th rounder from last June came from Kean University in New Jersey. Though he is not physically imposing at 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, Herget had one of the lowest walk rates per nine inning in the system last season with State College at 1.4.

The Cardinal Nation subscribers can check out my in-depth report of Thursday’s action, directly from Jupiter. This includes information not reported elsewhere including batting orders, pitch counts, pitcher velocity readings and exclusive news from these games.
