Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/16/14

Following are the highlights from the St. Louis Cardinals four minor league games on Sunday, March 16 against the New York Mets in Jupiter and Port St. Lucie. The Springfield squad won and Memphis tied in the first of five scheduled sets against New York this month.

Won-loss records do not matter, but as Mike Matheny reminded us recently, habits can be formed. Since scores are kept, for the record, the farm clubs are a combined 7-4-2 this spring.

This spring, Cardinals baseball operations assistant Tony Ferreira is sharing highlights from minor league spring training contests. As always, the raw data is his, but the comments and awards are mine. Unfortunately, while all pitchers are accounted for, only top hitters’ data is shared, so I will not aggregate incomplete hitting stats across multiple days.

When players are members of The Cardinal Nation Top 40 for 2014, their rankings are noted (TCN).

Sunday’s hitter of the day: Springfield’s Anthony Garcia (pictured) drove in three runs in a 2-for-3 day that included a two-run long ball plus a walk. Ranked in the TCN’s top 10 in 2013, the outfielder dropped all the way out of the new top 40 after an injury-plagued summer. Maybe we were wrong to count him out.

Sunday’s pitcher of the day: Reliever Victor De Leon fanned two of three batters faced in a perfect inning for Palm Beach. The 22-year-old right-hander can throw in the mid-to-upper 90s, but needs to harness his control to get back on track after an uneven 2013 at State College.

The Cardinal Nation subscribers can check out the minor league spring training invitees, full minor league spring training game schedules and more. Seven-day free trials are always available.

The entire system view by level and position as last season ended is available via the Roster Matrix, free, right here at The Cardinal Nation Blog.

  1. Lou Schuler says:

Just saw Tommy Pham take an AB in today’s game against Boston. I didn’t know he was that big. Or I guess I should say he looks bigger than I expected.

On TV, anyway, he looks like a power hitter.

If only if he could stay healthy!
