2014 Cardinals spring training number assignments

The Roster Matrix right here and the St. Louis Cardinals 2014 roster on the main site, The Cardinal Nation, are fully up to date. The former indicates all players invited to Major League spring training camp, 40-man roster players and non-roster invitees, but their uniform numbers are not designated. The main site roster does include uniform numbers, but players are listed based on their official year-ending 2013 teams until they have a firm assignment to open 2014.

In other words, big-league spring training uniform numbers are not included in either place. However, do not despair, as I have all the details here.

With at least 18 Cardinals spring games to be televised, the most ever, starting with the very first contest, you need to know who is who. After all, no one wants to get caught short – having to call a top prospect “Minor League Guy.”

Big league changes

New arrival Mark Ellis will be wearing Carlos Beltran’s old number 3.
Peter Bourjos is taking Ryan Jackson‘s previous number 8.
Matt Adams has elected to take number 32, last worn by Rob Johnson.
New assistant hitting coach David Bell is taking David Freese’s 23.
Pitching coach Derek Lilliquist has shifted from number 27 to 34, worn by John Axford in 2013.
Shortstop Jhonny Peralta has been assigned Lilliquist’s old number 27.

  6. […] Know your numbers:  We took a printout with all the players’ Spring Training uniform numbers to reference during practices and games.  It came in handy, especially with the abundance of minor leaguers in camp.  The always informative Cardinal Nation Blog (run by Brian Walton, @B_Walton) has a complete list here.
