Counting down to Cardinals Truck Day

A good way to sense if someone you know has a confirmed case of St. Louis Cardinals Spring Baseball Fever is if they are counting down the days until pitchers and catchers report to Jupiter, Florida.

While many of the players will be there well in advance, the mandatory arrival date for batteries is Wednesday, February 12.

Some fans have a particularly-acute strain of the fever, however. Symptoms include being unable to wait until reporting day, instead finding an even earlier, yet tangible target. The inflicted can instead count down to “Truck Day.”

For the uninitiated, Truck Day is that time each February when a pair of semi-trailer trucks depart Busch Stadium, full of all the gear the team will need for the next seven weeks at their home away from home, Roger Dean Stadium.

This year, Truck Day, is Friday, February 7.

The specifics are as follows. Under the direction of Cardinals equipment manager Rip Rowan and his staff, the trucks will be loaded on Thursday, February 6 and Friday, February 7. If all goes as planned, the equipment will be emptied over 1,100 miles away, in sunny Florida on Monday, February 10.

So just 10 days remain until 2014 Truck Day!

Thank you Brian. Since I have to work Friday, I think I will have a Truck Day Eve celebration. So its only 9 days.

Its not looking too good so far. The few people I’ve talked to seem to think the premise is absurd and I have gone over the edge. (Since when does there need to be a valid premise?)

I even suggested to one of my sons we could all meet at Broadway Oyster Bar which is a stone’s throw from Busch. He consulted his wife (gad) and countered with some Brazilian steakhouse in Clayton. Good grief. They don’t make baseball fans like they used to.

The Indians are first to celebrate Truck Day this year.
