Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Young Cardinals hometown pride

At the end of one year and the beginning of the next, it is customary to look back at the previous 12 months. That happens all over the country, including in the hometowns of today’s emerging St. Louis Cardinals stars.

It is easy to forget at times that these high-profile major leaguers were one-time little leaguers in their now-proud communities. Here are links to a few such articles recognizing local heroes that I have run across in the last few days.

Matt Adams: “Centre County’s top sports stories of 2013: #3. Philipsburg native on baseball’s biggest stage” from the Centre Daily Times, State College, Pennsylvania.

Kolten Wong: “Top Ten of 2013: #2. Kolten Wong reaches The Show” from West Hawaii Today, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Seth Maness: “‘One of Ours’ Makes the Big Time,” from The Pilot, serving Moore County, North Carolina.

The hometown pride even extends to new coaches.

Blaise Ilsley: “Alpena News Top 10 of 2013: No. 1: Blaise Ilsley becomes bullpen coach for the St. Louis Cardinals” from The Alpena News, Alpena, Michigan.

As an amateur, Maness was not beloved by scouts, falling to the 41st round despite an outstanding junior season, before the Cards signed him after his senior year. Maness joins Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig as college seniors who have provided great value.
