La Russa’s age accelerates his Hall chances

As announced by the Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday, retired St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is one of 12 candidates for election to the Hall of Fame Class of 2014. The group represents the Expansion Era, with primary contributions from 1973 to the present.

Normally, five years would be required post-retirement to be considered, but that does not hold for those over 65 years of age. La Russa celebrated his 69th birthday last month.

The ex-skipper will be considered along with former Cardinals catcher Ted Simmons, one-time St. Louis manager Joe Torre and nine other candidates.

A 16-member board will vote during the winter meetings, with the winners announced on December 9.  75 percent support will be needed for induction, an event to be held next July 27 in Cooperstown, New York.

Full details can be read at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum website.

Do the right thing and put Simba in the HOF.One of the better hitting catchers of all time.Just think of how many HRs he lost because of playing at Busch stadium.Best player on some bad teams and went out and Caught all those games year after year in the STLouis heat.If Simba put up his numbers in NY or LA or Boston he would be in the HOF already.TLR should be there also.

A .199 hitter with 200 PAs in the HOF, what is the world coming to.

    :/

I hope BDW doesn’t pull a hammy rushing out to paint the number on the wall.

Do any of you read the local paper? Somebody trying to discourage CB by suggesting he would be coming off the bench if he takes the QO? How many here think Carlos would have any problem at all playing his way off the bench with this crew? That mean it’s Mo talking? and not MM, who would have to supervise that?

Fox still waiting on LA? is 5.7 B a factor in any of this? You read here Joe? or are you just a smart observer? Nolan Ryan had 50 million in that ranger franchise. He got cashed out. Good investment? Good timing? Didn’t like how they were going to use that TV revenue? Texas won’t except bums. I see them sending as much as 30 million along with Andrus. They are going to want some talent. Could easily include Miller and Lynn along with a blue chip prospect.

This has little to do with baseball. There are other games being contested.

One other thing. Matt Holiday went the entire game 6 using the move. Every AB. They pitched him differently in respect. What does that mean. Nothing really, except that MH made an adjustment…..in a contest….. and that is huge. He may have a career year in 2014 with 40 plus dongs.

I highly doubt Beltran is going to base any part of his career decision on what he reads in the newspaper.

At least you waited to break out your patented phrase about this having nothing to do with baseball until the off-season was reached. ;-)

He was quoting from conversation he was privy to with Mo and his agent. ….. I could care less.
What do you mean read in the newspaper anyway. …….. They weren’t careful posed “quotes” of his reaction? ………… No he is gone as I always pointed out he would be. Nice choice of talking points.

I like Joe Torre as a player but he really didn`t do that good as a manager until he got to a team with big money behind it.
From my view Simba gets a nod over Dave Parker because Simba played a more demanding position and Simba played in the shadow of the greatest catcher .Simbas defense was adequate and his offensive stats are comparable to Hollywood Garvey and Parker.Dave Concepcion will be Simbas main roadblock because Joe Morgan and Frank Robinson will throw their support his way.Lasorda will back his boys Tommy John and Garvey.Hopefully Herzog can get more support for Simba. His offense and adequate defense should overcome his lack of national exposure while he played.
