Talking St. Louis Cardinals NLDS on WGEM

On Tuesday morning, I joined Josh Houchins on WGEM ESPN 1440 Radio. The subject was to cover the St. Louis Cardinals’ performance to date against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Division Series as well as look ahead to Game 5 on Wednesday evening.

Josh is the host of WGEM SportsCenter, the only sports talk show in the Quincy, Ill. area, on-air from 7:00–9:00 A.M. every weekday morning. You can learn more at wgem.com and follow Josh (@JWHooch) and the show on Twitter at @wgemesc.

Sister station WGEM 105.1 FM continues to be a member of the Cardinals radio network. If you live in the Tri-State area, make sure you tune in to game action all season long.

Like to see the Cards take some pitches tomorrow. Cole has great stuff and its hard to keep it in the strikezone. Make him throw strikes and work.
Like to see some bunts get dumped down in front of Alvarez. Pedro had 27 errors this year. He is not the niftiest 3B man.

  2. JumboShrimp says:

Jay, Descalso, and Matt Carpenter can each dump a bunt down the 3rd baseline. We could even put Wong in the lineup and have him try bunts too. Cole is a big guy and his motion should take him a little toward first, while Alvarez is not quick at 3B. I have more confidence in some of our guys bunting than in their swinging. They could get some base hit bunts.
We need to get some guys on base and make things happen, put pressure on the Pirates. We played small ball in game 3 and if Jay and Kozma had not stolen bases, the game would have not been tied. The aim is to win and if bunting for hits advances the cause of winning, good. Also work some walks. Make Cole throw as many pitches as possible.

Since he is on the roster, it is technically possible that Wong could start Game 5 of the NLDS. I would give it less than one percent odds, however, and even that would require both Carpenter and Descalso to have suffered freak injuries today. Are there any meteors in the area? ;-)

Good thing the Cards didn’t bench Freese so Wong could bunt, eh?

      • JumboShrimp says:

We are lucky Cole stopped throwing 100 mph pitches long enough to hang a mediocre breaking pitch in front of Freese. We are secondly lucky Freese did not miss it, since he has not had a great season.

Alvarez did make one error. Id like to see opposing teams give Pedro two or three bunts to field per game.
