Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/25/13

Monday marked the St. Louis Cardinals’ fourth of six scheduled camp days this spring. Memphis and Springfield met as did Palm Beach and Peoria on the Cardinals side of the Roger Dean complex. The remaining players in camp formed into two squads for an additional intersquad game.

The higher level clubs, Memphis and Palm Beach, were victorious as was Intersquad team 2. The Cardinals’ spring record against external minor league competition remains 14-16-6.

As he has been doing the last few seasons, Cardinals farm director John Vuch is sharing game stats. As always, the raw numbers are his, but the comments and players of the day are mine.

Monday’s Player of the Day: Palm Beach first baseman Jonathan Rodriguez (pictured) had a 2-for-3 afternoon that included a home run and three RBI.

Monday’s Pitcher of the Day: Max Foody, pitching for Intersquad 2, threw three scoreless innings on one hit and one walk. The left-hander fanned three. Foody was the Cardinals’ 12th-round pick in the 2012 draft.

Four players will not appear below as they took the bus ride to Ft. Myers and appeared for St. Louis on Monday – Ildemaro Vargas, Charlie Tilson, Jermaine Curtis and Adam Melker. Major league lefty Randy Choate also pitched to a number of batters to try to sharpen his game, but his stats were excluded. All runs appear to be accounted for with other hurlers.

    The Brewers have signed both Kyle Lohse and Yuniesky Betancourt!!

    Jackson played 3 innings, presumably with a section of bench glued to his butt, and still went 1 for 1. I missed the part where he got doubled off, hope he didn’t screw up.

    It was telling that when he and Garcia both went into the game in the 7th, Garcia played SS and Jackson 2B. Of course, Kozma had been shifted to 2nd, and he’s landed on his feet.

      Did you read the PD article “Cardinals are following the Musial model”? There was a telling sentence in there;

      ” At least one other player was removed from the active roster for off-field issues that were never publicly disclosed.”

      I immediately thought of Jackson. If it was him, whatever he did must have been bad.

        If so, I don’t mind the tough love routine. I have no reason to believe the Cards won’t give a young player with promise a second chance. Of course, if the player has a problem of some sort he may burn through the chances like some others have done.

        Anyway, he’s 1 for 1 after having been hot in minor league camp. Hoping he makes the most of whatever chances he gets.

        Thanks for mentioning the article, I had missed it due to work schedule. A great read.
