Yadier Molina has lost a quartet of his St. Louis Cardinals teammates from this weekend’s “Brawl at the Beach.” The home run derby and softball game benefiting the catcher’s Foundation 4 will be held in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Friday and Saturday.
Among the Cardinals originally listed as participating were outfielder Jon Jay, closer Jason Motte, outfielder Carlos Beltran, shortstop Rafael Furcal and catcher Tony Cruz, the latter noted as a first baseman.
All except Cruz have since pulled out (if they were ever committed), with Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo a new addition to the roster. “The Secret Weapon” ended his MLB playing career 16 years ago.
The main attraction at the charity events remain the three catching Molina brothers, Bengie, Jose and Yadier. Recent news is that eldest brother Bengie is expected to become the new assistant hitting coach for St. Louis.

It appears that every team except the Dodgers would try Gordon as an outfielder.

Huh?
Wish I lived nearby. I’d go to the Brawl to see the three catching Molinas, Jose, and Tony! Sounds great. Smart of Cruz to stay tight with the Molinas.
Randy Choate has had pretty good success the past few years, but is not a former starting pitcher who had big seasons. He was fringy for year. Went to Florida State U, like Barrett Browning, who may be a younger version of Choate.
Choate calls himself a “late bloomer” and credits Tampa manager Joe Maddon for slotting him into the limited role of a loogy where he has found more success.
During the early 1950s, there was a tv show, My Little Margie.
Two pro softball players bested the Molinas and Cruz in the home run derby.
Since a softball hitting contest, not surprising it was won by a softballing hotel manager.
