Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinal talk: KXnO FOX Sports Radio: Another elimination game

Late Monday afternoon, I joined Joe Quinn and Jim Brinson on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines in our regular series to discuss the St. Louis Cardinals, “Cardinal Talk.”

This time, we discussed the National League Championship Series Game 7 with no talk about the alternatives that follow. The Cardinals will return home after the game. Either they will entertain Detroit in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday or go their separate ways for the off-season.

Cardinals followers in central Iowa can again catch St. Louis Cardinals radio broadcasts on KXnO as well as my regular segment each week throughout the season, either over the air or via streaming. My appearances are sponsored by WCI Pools and Spas.

Been busy, so could not share my pessimism before the game. Cain at home is tough. Matt Carpenter is not in the lineup, disappointing, since he solved Cain in game 3. Holliday should be resting his back.
We went with out best pitcher of the year, Lohse. Its good to give things our best shot.
The Giants won it all in 2010 and racked up more wins this season, so if they prevail, its not an enormous upset.

Disgraceful baseball. Lousy freaking baseball.Crappy damn baseball.Twilight Zone baseball. Not ONE damned thing is going Cards way.Freaking disgusting.Nobody can hit.Nobody can catch the ball.Perfect imitation of the 1962 Mets.Lousy across the board.Lohse ought to slink out of town and take Holliday with him.

Embarassing.Shameful.No heart.Going thru the motions.Rolled over and quit.

Fun season. We knocked off the Braves and Nats. Furcal broke down, Kozma arose from nowhere to rally the team. Berkman suffered injuries, giving opportunity to Craig and Adams. Chris Carpenter had his chronic nerve problem, but his career was re-enabled by an operation. Jason Motte, astounding year. Ditto Yadier Molina. Beltran excelled. Lance Lynn collected 18 wins. Wainwright put in a full year and improved during its course. Many blessings.

Still too many times stupid baseball showed up.Matheny had many boneheaded moves…………..he`s gets a small pass because he is a rookie manager.Still Cards will have to figure a way to get some better bench guys.Somebody with some power would be nice. There is no guarantee Furcal can come back and be effective.2B continues to be a problem.Starting pitching needs to improve.Cards have 90 million bucks tied up in 8 players for 2013 so youth or cheap guys will be the bench.Beltran revived a bit late in the season but can the Cards survive if Beltran goes down with injury like Berkman and is useless?Carpenter has guts but does he have the stuff to be more than just another guy.The future looks good but never count on anything. For example i hoped the Cards would show up and not look like a big stinking turd.I was wrong.

Well, if this is how the Cardinals want to go out, so be it. It was a good season, but a mightily disappointing end.

They have a good team going into next year.

  7. Bw52 says:

How fitting that MR NonClutch makes the last out.I realize the guy has other family problems and isn`t 100% ………………………..but his consistent failures RISP have soured many fans on him.So Mo find a way to shed some overpaid players.

The Cards ran out of gas and were steam-rolled by the Giants in the last three games. We were not close to competitive in those games. No Deckinger missed call made a difference, we were shellacked.
In the first game, the Cards won because Madison Bumgamer was ineffective. In Game 4, we had an effective starter, Wainwright, whereas they did not. In Game 3, both teams had good starters, Cain and Lohse, and we eked out the W.
However, when the Giants had a good starting pitcher, Cain, Vogelsong, and Zito, they won 4 out of the 5, by wide margins.
Holliday will get blamed for the lack of hitting, because he makes a lot of money. He has a sore back or legs. Look for the Cards to consider shifting Matt to first base for 2013, as a way to save him from running around the OF and easing the miles on his back and legs.

Without all the bad luck it would only have been 5-0.

Matheny was right when he said the Cards would play a different brand of baseball. More lifeless and uninspiring than ever.

  10. Kansasbirdman says:

In the first inning when Beltran was on first and “stole” second on the third strike to Craig, does anyone think that that was actually a called hit and run? If so, Craig missed the outside pitch.

Funny, because in the bottom of that inning Scutaro made contact for a base hit on a very evidently called hit and run and Pagan(?) went from first to third. That ended up being the first run when Lohse couldn’t get a grip on the ball to go home and instead had to throw to first. Lot’s of defensive errors and missed plays resulted from Card’s defenders not getting good grips for throws these last few games.

We weren’t a hit and run team all year, so I don’t know. But it wouldn’t be surprising if we failed to execute, its been like that for the last three games, and on and off all season.

With the way the Cards had going cold down to a science, the fact every aspect of their game went cold so spectacularly at the end seems fitting.
