Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Cardinal talk: KXnO FOX Sports Radio: It’s the Cubs!

St. Louis Cardinals weekly chat on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines.

Late Friday afternoon, I joined Jim Brinson and Joe Quinn on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines in our regular series to discuss the St. Louis Cardinals, “Cardinal Talk.” We set up the home weekend series as the Cardinals entertain the Chicago Cubs along with the usual MLB discussion.

Cardinals followers in central Iowa can again catch Cardinals radio broadcasts on KXnO as well as my regular segment each Friday afternoon throughout the season, either over the air or via streaming. My appearances are sponsored by WCI Pools and Spas.

Lohse tough again. All wins are big now and should be celebrated.

In the other world, it’s criticize when you lose, and a lot of the wins are dismissed with “oh well we should beat them. No big deal.” There’s only a handful of games during the season where compliments are in order.

Wes, you are right many well intentioned fans can sound like kill-joys. Since we should beat the Cubs at home, therefore some could take a win for granted.
However, the Cubs started Dempster, having a strong season. But we jumped on him early and Matt hit a long homer, while Kyle sliced the Cubs up. These strong performances indeed deserve to be celebrated.
Matheny finally got off the dime and moved Furcal down to 8th and Jay to the bench. Berkman hit a double, so could warm up. We need to keep winning.

      • JumboShrimp says:

During June and July, Furcal has had an OPS below 600. This is well beneath the hitting of Greene and Descalso. They should start getting some of his starts. For his hitting, Furcal is not a 150 game per year SS anymore. Matheny needs to become more realistic about who is on the roster.
It is strange how Matheny talked in spring training of making Greene a regular. When he gets into the season, however, Mike develops a rut of writing Furcal’s name into the lineup card and after a while guys get rusty sitting on the bench.
We also should see more Matt Carpenter play at 3B. Give him a couple of starts there per week. Get more of the roster involved.
