Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Walton on RotoWire Fantasy Sports Monday on Sirius/XM

I returned as a guest of hosts Jeff Erickson and Chris Liss on RotoWire’s Fantasy Sports Today show on satellite radio. My segment was heard live starting at noon Central on Monday, May 21. The place was Sirius 211 / XM 147.

Our focus was on the 2012 Cardinals, specifically some of the key injuries and new arrival Matt Adams. There was also some time for National League Tout Wars fantasy baseball talk.

For 2012, RotoWire’s Fantasy Sports Today show is back on Sirius / XM live, Monday through Friday from 10 A.M. – 1 P.M. CT. The call-in number is 888-XM-FANTASY and listener participation is encouraged.

Disappointing last 4 days, but let’s keep things in perspective……… 24 road games so far, 17 home. Schumaker already had an injury issue. so has Jay, and Berkman and Craig have had two each. Carpenter has not pitched yet, and Wainwright has not yet come back to previous form. And we came into the season with long-time Cardinals Pujols, LaRussa, and Duncan gone.

Thus I proclaim the team grade for the first 1/4 of the season to be an A…….22-19 is not eye-popping but it’s first place.

Our friend Jumbo might say we are less than 10 1/2 games out, so why worry.

      Off to work, good luck.

    • JumboShrimp says:

Wes you make me seem like a pessimist, no little achievement.

    • Nutlaw says:

So the defending World Series Champions get an A grade for being three games over .500? It’s a good thing that they are being graded on a curve! :D

      • JumboShrimp says:

Nutlaw, did you notice the Twins releasing Jason Marquis and his 8.5 ERA? And they are paying Jason $3MM this year, which in comparison makes the Cards’ recruitment of Romero for only $750K seem genius.

        • Nutlaw says:

Not to say that I am displeased with this year’s team in the least, but again, if you set the bar low enough, anyone can impress! So yes, signing Romero was less insane than signing Marquis! :)

    Pessimism is for poopy-heads.

  3. JumboShrimp says:

Tyler turned around a 101 mph pitch from Cashner. Wow.

  4. WesPowell says:

My theory is that with the biggest sports complainers and criticizers it has nothing, really, to do with the team or sports. They are unhappy with their lives and their wives. Sports is a place to blow off their steam.

Didn’t like seeing that Motte racked up another blown save last night. Or that our lefty reliever looked bad again. Did like seeing Tyler step out of a phone booth with an S on his chest.

    • JumboShrimp says:

We have had the privilege of cheering for Theriot. And little Aaron Miles, short stuff. Brendan Ryan who OPSd 575 in 2010, putting the mighty into Mitey Izturis, he of the 630 OPS in 2008. Nick Punto was helpful last year, but hit exactly one HR.
So it was a refreshing change to see a middle infielder for the Cards sock a HR to the opposite power alley versus a pitch clocked at an astounding 101 mph.

Fat Schmelvis is doing a great job keeping up with Tyler. He schmacked #4 earlier. Of course, he has twice as many PAs, but who’s counting. As of now, he’s only .017 shy of his official weight of 230. Pour it on big guy.
