Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

Third and fourth chances for World Champs ring coming

On the heels of the St. Louis Cardinals’ popular 2011 World Championship ring giveaway and a shadow promotion at their organization-owned Double-A club in Springfield, both clubs are planning a second-chance date ahead.

St. Louis will run their second ring promotion on Friday, July 6, as the Cardinals match up against the Miami Marlins.  All fans who attend the game will receive a wearable replica of the 2011 World Championship ring.

Springfield’s second promotion will be sooner, this coming Thursday, May 2. It is more limited, with only the first 2,000 fans through the gates receiving the collectible ring. Last time, fans lined up at Hammons Field starting over eight hours early.

In one measurement of the interest level in these rings, they are currently selling on ebay for up to $100.

The Angels released Bobby Abreu. His OPS was 593.
    Albert’s OPS is 592.

We are already leapt ahead of the Brewers again. Playing at home, behind Lohse, we have a shot at collecting another W.

  3. JumboShrimp says:

Wow, Molina reopens the lead with his 4th HR. He has evolved into an offensive force.

Jay has his BA up to .392. Such a high average is useful near the top of the lineup.

Jay, Freese, and Molina have been key hitters for the Cards this season.

Another factor in the early season success of the Cards is role players making useful contributions. Unheralded Vic Marte has his ERA under 3. Boggs has pitched well. Shane Robinson has the highest OPS, while Matt Carpenter has collected RBIs. Schumaker has provided some hits. Its very helpful to have members of the supporting cast contributing.

This also helps morale here at the Cardinal Nation blog. Fans do not get as mad at Holliday’s batting average or whether Beltran is earning his salary or Berkman and C Carpenter. With a variety of players contributing, expectations are not heaped on just a few stars. Its nice to see everybody contributing when they get a chance. Matheny has a balanced team and he is keeping lot of players involved.

      • JumboShrimp says:

We have some hungry guys, who want to establish themselves as ML calibre players: M Carpenter, Shane, Descalso, Greene, Marte, Boggs.
Freese signed for $6,000, Carpenter for $1,000. Marte was picked up for $1. These guys are the opposite of bonus babies.
We have a few guys who have earned $100MM already, while some others are hungry. That’s a good balance. You feel like this team is focused on playing as best it can.

      • Nutlaw says:

In fairness, Beltran is definitely earning his salary. Losing Berkman for a couple of weeks isn’t anything horrible. Chris Carpenter got burned up last year, but he did so winning the team a championship. Even if he never pitches again, he did his part.

It is very nice to see pretty much the whole team playing well and is always encouraging to see the young guys perform.

  4. JumboShrimp says:

When the pride of Puerto Plata Vic Marte struck out PED Braun, it was welcome to the PCL for Ryan.

Springfield announced two more ring nights are coming… without disclosing when…
