Cardinals organization roster matrix: 2012 full-season

NOTE: This version of the roster matrix is no longer current. It reflects the 2012 changes from the end of spring training until the start of short-season ball. It should now be considered a historical reference document. For the active roster matrix starting with 2012 short-season play, click here.

With the full-season 2012 clubs preparing for regular-season action, it is time for another refresh of the St. Louis Cardinals system roster matrix. This version reflects the changes made from the conclusion of 2012 spring training through the beginning of the regular season and extended spring training until the draft and the start of short-season action in June. The previous matrix reflects the rosters as they evolved from when spring training invitations were issued through the end of camp.

If you are new to the blog and not familiar with the Cardinals organization roster matrix, here is quick summary:

At the time of this posting, the St. Louis Cardinals had 253 players under contract from top to bottom, including 39 players on the 40-man roster. The matrix places each one at his assigned level in the system by position and is updated daily or whenever transactions occur.

There is a group of 16 players listed under Injured/Rehab. They are not active on any of the rosters at this time.

Extended spring training camp invitees are shown in separate groups. The first is those initially invited to major league camp as NRIs and the early minor league camp invitees. The second group is the holdovers from regular minor league spring training while the third group is those who arrived for EST at the start of April.

Nowhere else will you find this current and comprehensive single-page view of the entire Cardinals organization.

Don’t be concerned about the order of the players’ names within a team. It doesn’t signify anything.

The players on the 40-man roster are designated in bold.

  1. JumboShrimp says:

The matrix identifies those out with injuries, including pitchers Siegrist and Whiting, and OFs Luna, Conley, and Hamilton.

  2. Kansasbirdman says:

    Votto + Reds = $225 Mil 10 yr deal?

  3. blingboy says:

With DD and Greene both occupying starting middle infield spots at Springfield, it was DD at short and Greene at 2B, rather than the other way around. The new world order? The Cards official site depth chart, which is maintained by the cleaning lady, now has Greene atop the second basemen.

Meanwhile, Descalso, the only functional leadoff hitter we have, is the third string 2B and 3B, and not listed at SS at all.

The roster matrix, with no cleaning lady, has Greene at SS with Raphy Mendoza, and DD as the only second baseman until Skip comes back.

It must be noted that the cleaning lady has the benefit of being able to list players at multiple positions, due to the difference in format, whereas the non-cleaning lady can list them only once.

Still, the point is that on the eve of opening day, the middle infield seems to be up in the air. It has been suggested that Mike will go with Furcal at SS and Descalso at 2B for opening day, even though his real starting middle will be Furcal/Greene and nobody to get on base leading off. We will have to see.

    • Brian Walton says:

If you are looking for the answer from depth charts, you may as well have Chinese food for lunch and check the fortune cookies. ;-)

P.S. Good to know the cleaning lady learned who Erik Komatsu is.

      • blingboy says:

Now the official site chart has been amended to remove Skip, Craig and Carp. So DD has moved up to 2nd string at 2B. So we’re that much closer to having a leadoff hitter. :)

Rule 5 boy is second string at all 3 OF spots with AAA boy 3rd.

MCarp is 2nd at first and third, his new OF versatility being theoretical at this point.

The middle of the rotation reads Lohse, Garcia, Westbrook.

I don’t know who is sweeping up over there.

Rotoworld has SS as Furcal/Greene and 2nd as Greene/Descalso/Skip. Skip appears nowhere else besides 3rd string 2B. Robinson is Jay’s backup rather than Rule 5 boy.

A quick check of shows Out of Options Boy leading off the projected lineup (yikes). The rotation reads Lohse/Garcia/Wainy/Westbrook/Lynn, which I presume is the order in which they are expected to be rolled out as the season gets underway.

CBS still has Hamilton on there and Beltran backing Jay. Earth to CBS.

  4. ArRedbird says:

I believe Ismael Brito (DSL roster) is a lefty.

    Thanks for the updates!

  5. crdswmn says:

    Rockies claimed Ottavino off waivers.

    Good luck to him.

    • JumboShrimp says:

Thanks for the link to the latest from Albert. He has a great work ethic and is looking forward to what he can achieve next. I really admire his hardworking attitude. Every player is as good as their next performance.

  6. blingboy says:

“. . . Buster Olney has a big breakdown of the highest and lowest ticket prices for various team’s Opening Day on the secondary market right now:

Top five teams with the lowest home average ticket price:

    Brewers: $48
    Pirates: $48
    Royals: $48
    Dodgers: $49
    Reds: $54.43

Top five teams with the highest Opening Day ticket price:

    Red Sox: $305.58
    Yankees: $256.54
    Marlins: $255.28
    Cardinals: $248.68
    Rangers: $237.22″

  7. blingboy says:

Trivia. Name the last Cardinal to qualify for the batting title in a season without hitting into a GIDP?

    • blingboy says:

The last Card to have enough PAs to qualify for the batting title without grounding into a DP was Ray Lankford. He did it in 1994.

The last guy to do it was Craig Biggio in 1997.

  8. ArRedbird says:

A question about Reggie Williams who is on the Suspended List
and must miss the first 50 games of the season.

Do the Cardinals have the option of placing him on the Quad Cities roster,
which would mean he could begin play sometime in May –
vs placing him on the Batavia roster, which would mean he couldn’t begin
    play until late July/early August?

    • Brian Walton says:

Yes, I expect the earlier return. A comparable case is Alan Ahmady, who was suspended after his 2009 season with Batavia. He was rostered on Quad Cities to start 2010 and came off suspension on June 1.

  9. ArRedbird says:

    That makes sense. Thanks!
