Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly: Setting the World Series

Leading up to the World Series, I was a guest on “Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly” heard across the state of Arkansas – on ESPN 1190 The FAN in Northwest Arkansas, ESPN 96.3 in the River Valley and Western Arkansas, and 103.7 the BUZZ in Little Rock and Central Arkansas.

Our focus was a recap of how the St. Louis Cardinals made it to their upcoming match with the Texas Rangers and what may be ahead.

I take it the Arkansas gig is a step up from DesMoines, like AA to AAA.

The Rockies claimed RF/LF/1B/3B man Andrew Brown who had a good hitting season for Memphis. When the Cards activated Lance Lynn, Brown got DFA’d.
The Cards could have released Patterson and kept Brown on the 40 man roster. Corey is inactive and entering free agency.
But the Cards like to respect a long time pro like Patterson. Its bad enough he could not make the playoff roster, no reason to dis him with early release.
We would likely have dropped Brown off the 40 man roster later, in any event. Steven Hill and Aaron Luna are similar players, so we will still have some hitters for Memphis next season, even after Stavinoha and Brown are gone.

The Cardinals follow Carpenter with Jaime Garcia in Thursday’s Game 2, Kyle Lohse in Saturday’s Game 3 in Texas and Edwin Jackson in Sunday’s Game 4. La Russa described the alignment as subject to change.

I find this statement………”the alignment is subject to change.”……interesting……. what variables come into play? How might a weather compression change the order for instance? Seems like he might have Jackson and Westbrooke on the Ready for the openers ??? maybe???…………..

Its been raining or drizzling off and on, mostly on, for about 48 hours and is supposed to continue. The ground is like a wet sponge. Gametime will be mid forties dropping into low forties, with light rain or drizzle on and off, and the last I heard the wind should be picking up.

A guy with a sore elbow might not be able to get loose. Any pitcher could have problems. A long half inning in the dugout could be trouble. Anything might happen

Fall baseball is supposed to be played in dreary weather Bling. I give the Cards the advantage in the bad weather. Bank on a Cards win tonight. CJ hasn’t been sharp in a while if I remember correctly so this may look a lot like a Shawn Marcum start against the Cardinals. I expect Carp to be good enough tonight to hold the Rangers to 3 or 4 runs and that should be good enough with the Cards offense putting up 7.

AP is completely immersed in his career position………. that is either incredible stupid from a competitive standpoint……….or he is drunk his own mythological brew…………… bottom line…I hope they walk the myth ……… ofter…….CJ Wilson misses up allot…….and throws 94…….Freese/Holiday/Berkman from the right side…even Molina away …… might touch this guy………if they are watching the strike zone and not the count………………

As for them………the have good swings….around the body…..they are only watching the strike zone…………. big meat eater……….. we have to hit our spots…….trending toward the bottom third..changing speeds……. and we must field like banshee’s if the pitchers can get that far along in their part of the deal ……………. if we kick the ball around……. its going to be a long / short series..

-120 7 /12 Cardinals……………. very little movement in these lines……….. allot having to do with a very large number of unknowns………….. This is truly a heavyweight fight between brawlers….horseshoes clearly showing through the padding on their gloves………. bottom line….Texas got ripped by the Rays in game one………got off the canvas…..and beat them up…….. We showed some character after game one with Milwaukee……… the point…….if Tony doesn’t allow for lead swings in this one……he will savage his Pen in a hurry……..thats not so good…………

  6. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

    lost post………….

  7. blingboy says:

What will Tony send up against the lefty tonight?

Holliday back at clean up probably. Tony already said Lance will get the start in right rather than Craig. So does Lance hit fifth? Does Jay hit second or drop down? No Skip I assume, so is it Theriot or Punto?

The Rangers like to run. Yadi will have to rise to the occasion early, gun a couple down. Maybe he and Albert can pull the pickoff. That would settle things down.

The one guy under the most pressure is Wilson. Playing for a big FA contract, sucked so far this post-season. Needs to redeem himself, bad weather, hot lineup, sea of red.

The Rangers have never played in STL and hopefully they will not want to come back.

    • crdswmn says:

I think the pressure is on the Rangers because of the expectations. Same as Philly, but not as bad. Pitching is a crapshoot, imo. Randy Wolf sucked in the NLDS but rose to the occasion in the NLCS. Marcum, on the other hand, sucked worse as he went along. Wilson could go either way.

Carp is also an unknown. Sore elbow, pitched a lot of innings, could be out of gas. But he also could rise to the occasion as he did in Philly Game 5. Who knows.

      • WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Wolf did not rise to the occasion CRD………………. we were on our knees……….. CJ throws to hard to incite stupidity………… if he had a good change up…….they would be a 50cent favorite……….

        • crdswmn says:

I realize that Wolf is a pitcher we have trouble with WC, being a soft tosser and a lefty and all. But Wolf still pitched better in the NLCS than he did in the NLDS. The hard throwing lefties are a better matchup for the Cards for sure, but anything can happen.

    • WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

He leaves allot of balls up in the Zone BB…………and he likes to try and slide or cut balls to the outside black………………. he sets up well for Holiday/Freese/and even Lance from the right side……….because he throws 94……. I trust we aren’t stupid enough to try and pull him………… Molina pushing also looks good……………… to me…… a slap hitter with purpose at second is perfect…..Punto…..he likely starts Theriot though because Skip will get the rightie’s ……………….. they have to be thinking ground balls and those that can handle them………….. Holiday hits 5th…Lance 4th………he has to be thinking about a bunter hitting second……or Holiday……… All RH hitters must think middle away…..it they do, they will force mistakes in………..if AP chases away …..and hits a bunch of foul balls when he comes inside…and he will pitch him on the hands……thats trouble………this guy will hit you if you let him……I hope we do…………….

      • blingboy says:

I’m not sure about Lance fourth against the lefty. But Tony might be planning ahead, thinking Wilson won’t go deep. Construct a lineup meant for their middle relief. Tony is a mad scientist. And I’m not sure if he knows anything about science.

HBP would sting a little on a night like tonight.

  8. blingboy says:

    Rangers lineup:

    1. Ian Kinsler (R) 2B
    2. Elvis Andrus (R) SS
    3. Josh Hamilton (L) CF
    4. Michael Young (R) 1B
    5. Adrian Beltre (R) 3B
    6. Nelson Cruz (R) RF
    7. Mike Napoli (R) C
    8. David Murphy (L) LF
    9. C.J. Wilson (L) P

  9. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

My weather map show ST right on the edge of a rotating front………..wind blowing from the North….which is left field in it seems………….. you can look at it from many different distances with your scroll………..

    http://www.weather.com/weather/map/interactive/USIA0037

  10. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

AJ is a nice kid …………. but as a color man …… its going to take some getting used too ………

Heavens that is a formidable lineup they have ……………… they are bound to test our corner outfielders……………….

  11. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Bet Tony bunts with Jay next time…………. these guys are just swinging away……at bad pitches…..he just got Kinsler on a ball way up………………. just like a baseball game……….. lets see who starts playing to win first………..

  12. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

At this point………they have a pretty good idea what cheese the Cardinal ballplayers are vulnerable too…………….. Jay is just going to the plate……….he doesn’t have a plan…….not so good. All hr home run hitters……….except nick……..who took what was given…….Carp is working….but the temp is going down…….that hard on an old man……

  13. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Game is on……………… Matt and Lance take whats given………… Molina is still looking for glory……… Carp is trying to stay loose……….hopefully the stay aggressive and help keep his exposure tome to a minimum…..top of 5

  14. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Its gonna happen………..its what we do about it……….. Carp in cutting almost everything……..the big breakers eats elbow………….. he will have to go there a little more often…….thats five innings…..I hope we back him…………. all the BP guys will have trouble with the finesse pitches……..Lynn less so……….lets get Cj now………..

  15. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

That trip to the mound was productive…………..they fed Matt something he could turn on……but down.,,,,,,,,,,,,following the double away….good pitch..they’re a good team……

  16. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

That was such good baseball,,,…… Young knew what pitch he would get.he took it where it had to go………..Pujols made a money play and feed…………………this could be a good series……….don’t know how long Chris hangs…………. its cold…..

  17. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

The just feed Molina what he dreams of………..and he just swings away……..and he’s a catcher????????

  18. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Don’t second guess Tony on pulling Carp………..that was exactly what was necessary on many different levels………… The issue is…..Molina took a bad AB and it leads you to their answer to Craig……..they will feed him inside and try to beat him away…….up in the strike zone probably……….is Craig playing to win ………….of his shoot at the fence……..

  19. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Wow…………Craig hits the setup pitch…below the strike zone………..smart not to wait for the gas at the tip that was coming…………….. Tony played it by the book……good for him…good for the book….
Lets see if Salas has the goods………….

  20. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Salas better get the ball down………………….1 out

  21. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

He stayed away from Napoli………..he will go to Scrabble and then Lynn……….. Kynn’s motion is more favorable to these conditions…………. The right handers will crush Zep so Tony better scramble the whole pen……

  22. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Bravo for Zep Meister……..and Dave D. Nice blocks by Molina…………… we need to run with that momentum……………………… lets rock……………

  23. blingboy says:

nice clutch by Zep. Carp did a nice job, Tony pulled him in time.

  24. blingboy says:

We need a clutch hit by Punto.

  25. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Here goes the match up of the series…………. 4/5/6 against Motte………..It would be a nicely played game by all if we pull this off………………

  26. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Best played game of the year………………by both teams I’d bet

  27. blingboy says:

Matt wasn’t going to have that one go off his belly. Awesome.

For a team with no ‘closer’, we gotten some nice saves by that guy.

    • WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

I loved the match up game BB…………they are a well coached team…they were ready for that…….
I’m guessing Jamie has a little bit of shelter which I think will help………. Jason Motte..WS interview…………save that video…………

  28. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

My game ball goes to Dave Duncan……….Cardinal pitchers hit the spots he said were good…and they were……………Tony stayed by the book…..almost……….Berkman back to 4 tomorrow……… he will give skip the start……………..

    • blingboy says:

What about a game ball to Big Mac.

Also important for the future was Yadi slamming the door on the running game. Hard pitch to handle, unhurried throw, got him by a mile.

Well executed bunts make me feel all tingly.

Great quality start by Carp. And the face plant was a perfect 10.0

  29. Kansasbirdman says:

“Fun fact”. I learned/read this week that Jason Motte needs glasses in most cases but actually doesn’t. Use them on the mound bc glasses fog and contacts get dried out. Gotta be scary for a batter facing his heat when they find out!

  30. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Texas played a solid tactical game…………and they have a pen……….. I thought they dealt with Molina …………..with his new active bat stylings………..idiot……… My game ball goes to AP…..he took the walks, made the stops………..he led the team on the field………..Bravo…….. Freese, hopefully will come back to earth………

  31. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

“I wouldn’t hesitate to play him at second, but I’m not sure I will,” Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said.
