Ejections rise with temperatures

As excessively high temperatures have gripped much of the country in recent weeks, I have continued to wonder if the level of reader/poster civility erodes accordingly. Though I could not prove it, experience tells me there would be a correlation between heat and crankiness.

With the help of STATS LLC, the Wall Street Journal has the data that indicates this definitely occurs on Major League Baseball fields across the nation. They looked at the game time temperatures of every contest during which an ejection occurred since 2002. There are typically between 200-300 boots given each season.

They found that the ejection rate increases correspondingly with the thermometer reading. The following table indicates the rate of ejections per 100 games by 10-degree bandwidths.

MLB ejection rate by game time temperature (since 2002)

Game Time Temperature Ejections per 100 games
<50 5.8
50-59 7.2
60-69 8.4
70-79 8.6
80-89 10
90+ 11.4

In a quick search, I could only find St. Louis Cardinals ejections this season. Interestingly, there have had just three, with the most notable the one-game suspension-generating umpire bump performed by Ryan Theriot in Cincinnati two weeks ago.

On the other hand, over three times as many Cardinals opponents in 2011 have been thrown out of games. The most recent of the nine was a quartet of Tampa Bay Rays booted on the first of last month – until Cubs manager Mike Quade was run on Saturday night after arguing about Matt Holliday‘s hard slide toward Starlin Castro.

Because I was curious, I looked up the temperatures of the games with the 13 ejections. I cannot draw any conclusions from this. I do wonder, though, if there are simply more ejections as the season gets longer and the games become more important. Of course, the average outdoor temperatures rise accordingly – at least until September and October.

So far, the Cardinals seem to be able to remain cooler than their 2011 opponents. This is a 10-3 score of which they would surely rather remain on the short end.

  2. blingboy says:

Furcal looks like a ss out there. Very smooth.

Its good to see Matt hitting with power somewhere besides LF. I think he had an opo the other day, and to cf now.

  3. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

They use the balance point stall to create downward motion……… Garcia is moving more smothly, but the ball is up………. when he toys with the stall…..he telegraphs……….. we have to have some runs to back him…………or he won;t make 4………Cards own him now…….they won’t trash him….. MH goes yard …Lance bunts……….we need to score

  4. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

They are pitching around Descaslo………………….but his says “no way”……………its like a nightmare….

Freese was the player …Danny at 2nd……. at worse case..Fresse works him to right……..

  5. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Very sweet moment for Jamie……….after crushing that foul ball before……he challenges……….

  6. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Descalso uses a check swing and simple base hit stroke to garner 2 hits………….. MM is an idiot…….
    Tony didn’t leave Freese in defensively………so he’s baby sitting………..he sucks……..

  7. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Every Cardinal Hero thinks they are the exception to reason………….. Holiday should be embarrassed to go after that pitch………………but Berkman……who they are going to pitch around…..offers at a bad pitch so it doesn’t go to Skip…….who shouldn’t be in the game anyway………

  8. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Love Tony’s planning……….. but watch it cost us the game………..because it was AP……… Tony is on a roll………….

  9. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Poor ZEPski…………….his first big Loogy and no strikes…………he looked scared to death….and Tony/Dave could see it……………………

  10. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Tremendous showing by Lynn………. nice work by Molina………bailed Tony out……..lets see who want to win…………………

  11. Nutlaw says:

You have to be impressed with Lynn’s poise here tonight.

  12. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Why you ask?????????? Tony makes no calls…..best bunter in baseball……….it takes a double to score Molina………..No pinch runner……….no nothing……….Tony just watches……….but he had the hammer for Braun………thats a call………

  13. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Patterson will start in center tomorrow……….or right if Berkman is too sore….he tweaked is right shoulder pretty good earlier……… Where are our hero’s?

  14. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

This is a bit controversial………..so don’t read it if your are easily offended………….. Skip is praying after every pitch………after every play……..he is obsessively trapped in what is a very weak competitive posture………… religion doesn’t work that way………neither does meditation or prayer….. if fact it is a denial of your privilege to be gaming for a living……….. it is spontaneity and the expression of joy…….it is not the Roman Coliseum…………. repentance or any form of metanoia are just impediments to negotiate each moment of the competition…………..

  15. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Holiday once again is a liability………Furcal saves his butt…………

  16. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Tony once again……………never will use Salas for 2 innings……………….it not his thing……..

  17. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

You have to admit……………… the pressure here isn’t converting to better performances………. and he is bringing in the very fragile KMac…………… mysterious stuff from Tony………..

  18. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

    walk them both……

  19. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

I thought they were going to walk them both and go after Magee……….. A good visit by Dave for a change…….

  20. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

    Kmac………….no…………..Dotel….yes….please…………….

  21. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Pinch running for his catcher………..whats wrong with this guy………….. Tony almost got away with a confidence builder for Kmac…………… he tried……..lets hope Council doesn’t steal this base…….because he will try……

  22. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

In order to insure a win ………..I was forced to change to the Cardinal feed for that last at bat…..it of course worked………………. that was a walk through the graveyard…………… Thats a BD win…rented talent all the way……….

  23. crdswmn says:

What a game. It had everything. And we won it.

Don’t understand what got in to Yadi, that is not like him. Suspension coming for sure.

    • WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

CRD…………best thing that could of happened…………..Tony manages a mental game…rarely a tactical game…………….. Yadi is a Castle in his thinking……..to much pressure on his castle wall………The new guys seem to be feeding on these opportunities save for Zepski………..they may make us………

If it was my team………and I wanted to win……….. I release Skip….when Tony protests…..I fire his ass…………… That gets rid of most of these problems……… Bases loaded..1 out….Molina at third..full count……… best bunter in baseball at the plate……..I squeeze………take off speed out of it….take no speed out of it from third….bad pitch is a walk…….he is going to get a strike……even a foul ball is a dead ball….anything fair gives you the run with a tough out at first………. Tony stores up all this tension……..but he doesn’t make calls for which he is directly accountable…….he is cowardly coach in my three years here……….. and not using a pinch runner with Molina at second who can’t score on the single……….because Yadi is to important………..is BS………just like Pujols choked all night long……these guys are hot air……….

  24. Bw52 says:

Oh the irony of the last line.

  25. Bw52 says:

Nice comeback after trying to give it away.

  26. Kansasbirdman says:

Brian, you sure have timely articles. You write about the heat making things more intense and then we got one of the most intense games of the season.

  27. Kansasbirdman says:

Two things I like so far about furcal, he seems to have some baseball sense to go with his smooth D, and I liked that he on more than one occasion went to the mound to help/reassure or give a little advise about a batter to Garcia. It seems like several times this season we have left a pitcher out to dry, not just coaching but teammates have been reluctant to visit the mound and give a little reprieve or reassurance. Furcal is showing he is invested in this team, and in being “a” team, I like it
