NOTE: This version of the roster matrix is no longer current. It reflects the 2011 changes from the end of spring training until the start of short-season ball. It should now be considered a historical reference document. For the active roster matrix starting with 2011 short-season play, click here.
With the full-season minor league schedule underway, it is time for another refresh of the St. Louis Cardinals system roster matrix. This version will reflect all changes made from the start of the 2011 regular season. The previous matrix reflects the rosters at the conclusion of the spring camp.
If you are new to the blog and not familiar with the Cardinals organization roster matrix, here is quick summary:
As the 2011 regular season opened, the St. Louis Cardinals had 276 players under contract from top to bottom, including a full 40-man roster. The matrix places each one by position at his current assigned level in the system or his placement at the end of last season whichever is most recent. It is kept updated daily or as transactions occur.
Nowhere else will you find this current and comprehensive single-page view of the entire Cardinals organization.
Don’t be concerned about the order of the players’ names within a team. It doesn’t signify anything.
The players on the 40-man roster are called out in bold.

At the end is a group of currently inactive and unassigned players.
There will be a new roster matrix once the June draft has passed and short season ball begins.

I just noticed that this new roster matrix is my 1000th blog post since I started this offshoot site 2 1/2 years ago. I knew I had a lot to say, but that is still a big number for one writer…
I would like to thank all the many readers and especially the subset that post and engage in discussion on a regular basis. If you have been lurking, the new season offers a great time to join in…
Congrats Brian and thanks for making this forum available.
Brian, for clarification, this is your 1,000 article in just 2.5 years? This would be over and above your posts for the Cardinal Nation non-blog? This seems like a tremendous outpouring of work, for which readers should thank you.
Yes, that is correct. The 1000 is just new articles here at the blog. My goal all along was at least one per day here, but the number still feels big.
Congratulations Brian, and thanks
The 2011 SLC are being beat pretty soundly between the foul lines. There are many misconceptions surrounding these events. Most boards aren’t really responding to the (real) issues, or even locating causes. That includes this board. A progressive dialog takes into account changes as they are validated by “projection” which then elevates the expectation…………..narrowing the rhetoric.
Bottom line…………..there is an element of risk/reward in your “occupation” Brian. Posters should be encouraged to say what they believe, in a courteous way. Until you get rid, or civilize the “hecklers” , yours will not be a hot property. RC is busy these days, but would probably like to explore some topics of interest. I am reluctant to point them out because of the “Wild West” sensibilities that seem to be required…………………….I don’t just sit here writing……..I’m practicing and glancing at the laptop by my chair…..typing with one hand (recklessly)…………….. this is the most interesting time in the last three yrs for me……… because we are right where I’ve projected. Its just starting to get interesting. Get into it yourself.
Throw some of your topics out there WC and see what sticks.
I am all for throwing out most of Westies topics.
He’s interesting. Sterile environments are boring,
Heckler!!!!!
He is OUR resident flake and should be appreciated on this basis.
they likely are being beat in the dugout and the front office as well though those scoreboards are a little more nebulous.
Congrats, Brian on 1K. May you have plenty more.
Freedom of speech, I love it. “Until you get rid, or civilize the “hecklers” “. Westcoast, hello, this Blog is one the tamest blogs out there and one of the least populated when it comes to hecklers. Differing opinions make this country great. I don’t get a chance to respond on this blog frequently. But I do enjoy reading mostly what everyone writes and claims.
Anyways, I’d say don’t change a thing Brian, keep up the good work. I find it quite informative and entertaining. You’ve truly sharpened my knowledge on the Farm System
ummm, I meant to put “hello, Westcoast” like a greeting. I reread my post and it sounds bad, forgive me, not my intention.
I good thought T8. A valid opinion well stated. “Tame” doesn’t necessarily bond in most cases with “relevant” though T8…………………… an “opinion” on topics that have a “linear time” opportunities for validation………becomes something else in a progressive group…………building blocks for a higher understanding. I’ve decided to follow the team on its West Coast swing this year. Perhaps I’ll write about it at some point………. all the best to the group.
So give me one of your theories WC. I’m not RC but I may have something “relevant” to say. Try me.
Westie is big on opinion today. Usually he just states things as facts without much insight as to why they are fact. In either case, he isn’t big on being held accountable for either “facts” or opinions.
Well your opinion concerning his opinion is predictable, therefore, boring,
Sorry CC, I like you a lot, but I am in need of some mental stimulation and WC’s theories provide that, factual or unfactual. So If you wouldn’t mind not chasing WC off again with your commentary, I would appreciate it.
Contra-factuals can serve to illuminate.
I actually like Westie’s comments as well. But I have little tolerance for people who make wild ascertains and then wont back them up. Anybody can be entertaining if they are not accountable.
I am more interested in entertainment than accountability in this case. Besides, I think WC know more than you think.
Well he knows more than I think or thinks he knows more than he does. Or maybe both.
Speaking of Farm system – Quad Cities OF looks huge. And will Martinez eventually land in QC after extended ST? Or does he jump to PMB, or am I on the other end of the spectrum (Rookie/short season)?
It seems possible that Martinez could end up in Quad Cities this summer but I think Palm Beach is most unlikely in 2011. We’ll have to see how fast and smoothly he handles the USA transition.
Reds finally lost. To Astros 3-2.
Brian must have some impressive callouses on those fingertips.
Been waiting for the rollout of the matrix. Since Descalso seems to be here as a third baseman, maybe he is misplaced.
I especially like being able to look at archived matrices, and the chronological list of all player transactions at every level of the organization. A regular, non-hyperventilating fan could never hope to have access to that historical info anywhere else.
How about some of you offering up a few topics of your own?
It is easy to sit back and just lob rocks at others…
The Cards went with Valdes and Rundles over Norrick.
If focused in the role of reliever, Kulik could have a good season. He has the experience and pitches to take it up a notch.
I am looking forward to the minor league season. The system is mostly Cards signees, only a couple of interlopers.
Jumbo you touted Kulik as a reliever last year – I dont believe he was any better in relief than has a starter.
Kulik is not ML starting material, but has a good arm, so if focused on relief, might thrive. They have used him a lot as a starter, but AA should have enough alternatives this year.
Additon might have a good year too, now he has time under his belt at AA.
The minor league rosters look good.
I ordered my tickets for the Springfield Cardinals v. Arkansas on Monday May 9. It will be my first minor league game and I am taking a friend who is not a baseball fan, but likes Springfield and wanted to go.
I’m sure you will have a great time. I used to see minor league games all over the midwest within half a day or so drive of STL. Used to especially enjoy the trip down to see the Travelers back in the day. Another really good venue is Woodman Park for a River Bandits game. One time, on the way back from Moline, we spotted a ball park in Hannibal where a game was getting ready to start, so we popped in. That was when I saw Cards minor leaguer Matt Adams play the first time. I think that was a college summer league game, but could be mistaken. I had been hoping he’d start at Quad Cities this year but Brian dashed my hopes.
I wonder if Westy will be catching any of the games this weekend out there in la-la land. Friday is the Giants opening day, Saturday is WS ring ceremony, Sunday Buster Posey rookie of year day. I hope we ruin the whole thing for them.
WC is dealing with some winter storm advisories this morning out in LA. He won’t stray far away from the computer on this day.
Rapoport and Bynum at AAA, Scruggs and Cutler at AA, Ryde-Rod at Palm Beach. I am unsure how severely those men are injured. The Cards like to stash a few extra guys on minor league DLs, in case of roster openings arise.
There was a good message board comment featured on stltoday.com. Suggets a middle infield of Brendan and Hudson was doable, for the same money Theriot and Skip are getting. Points out that there is a combined 40 point UZR difference between those infields, and what it would take offensively to make up for that. Concludes ” It’s sad that we made the team worse so a couple guys (and Tony) wouldn’t have to try to get along with someone they dislike. ”

As much as it would satisfy me to get on board with this comment, I don’t think it is helpful. The past is past, and dwelling on what could have been does no good. TLR does what he does and he will never change. Brendan Ryan is better off. Move on.
i have a feeling there will be plenty enough of the present to blame TLR, the FO, etc, on before this season is over.
I felt the same way. Ryan is over.
I think we are saying the same thing here – for me Ryan is off the table as a subject; but only until the end of the season. During the season I will support the team we have. When the season is over and we see what results TOny and Mo got with the team they wanted then it is possible (likely) that Ryan will come back up.
I think everyone missed my point, which I didn’t make clear. Brendan is gone, but those who chose to weaken the team for their own ease and comfort are not. That’s what is on the table, and it was that point, made in the last sentence, that caught my eye.
BB-the powers that be obvuiously felt BRs negatives outweighed his positives. He didn`t bring enough to cover for his failings.
Go on drinking the koolaid BW
crdswmn-enjoy your glass of delusion-ade
My guess is that kool-aid is pretty sour tasting at the moment.
Exactly right 52. That is exactly how they felt. Ridding themselves of those negatives was the important thing.
Congrats Brian! Thanks for keeping this going. Really appreciate your steadfastness with new writing daily on this site.
I would not have thought of “steadfastness,” but it is a pretty good depiction!
Haven’t I been saying it all along.? That Therriot is a gamer. When is bobblehead day?
Now let Albert splash a salami!!
Wowza, Treveor Rosenthal collects 12 outs, 11 via strikeouts. A few more starts like that one and he is going to need a promotion.
Sounds like an evenful outing for the Missouri boy. 2 ER on 2 hits, a walk, 2 hit by pitch a wild pitch and 11 K, all in 4 innings.
Better get on that bandwagon now while there is still room. All kinds of people will soon start “discovering” him.
