Jaime Garcia’s Sunday gem in historical context

On Sunday, St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jaime Garcia helped his club notch its first win of the season as he tossed a four-hit complete game shutout while striking out a career-high nine San Diego Padres. Garcia walked two.

The team needed the win to avoid being swept at home and starting 0-3 for the first time since 2007. Despite the momentum of the 2006 World Championship, 2007 became a non-playoff year.

Garcia’s gem was fittingly the ninth nine-or-more strikeout game posted by a Cardinals pitcher in the first three games of the season (since 1920). Not surprisingly, Hall of Famer Bob Gibson logged five of the first eight.

It was the 49th time a Cardinals pitcher threw a shutout while fanning at least nine and allowing four hits or less at any time of the season. Garcia’s teammate Chris Carpenter had the last four, three during his 2005 Cy Young Award season. Carp is second all-time to Gibson’s 12.

102 pitches in 9 is impressive, especially with all the Ks. Carp threw 98 in 7 Thursday and only struck out 4.

It seems like going around 100 pitches is quite an effort for the first start of the season, but I’m just guessing. Wouldn’t think you would want a guy going past that yet. Of course, it was different in Gibby’s day.

Will be very interesting to see Lohse. His ST was good, with a bad one at the end, while Garcia was bad with a good one at the end.

I didn’t see the game so I dont know if Jamie was laboring but he was still getting groundouts up until the end as well as the K’s.

I thought he looked good up to the end. 102 pitches, record high temperature for this date, 90F. Hell yes, he looked good.

It was oh so close to heading south on him. In the sixth, Theriot muffed a double play by dropping the ball while taking it out of his glove after the force at second. (That’s three games out of three for the Riot) Fortunatly, Descalso made a very good reaction grab of a hot shot and stepped on the bag doubling up the runner to end the inning. IMO, if that ball had gone into the corner, tieing or giving them the lead, after having gotten the inning ending DP grounder that was muffed, Garcia would have imploded. He should be treating Daniel to a steak about now.

The Skip, Dan, Brick Hands singles, producing the insurance run, was excellent. Nice.

Good thoughts BB………………….. Tony was shooting from the hip there………. he had Freese up and with helmet on to pinch in the 8th………when Shu got that hit, he startled everyone when he told Jamie to get a bat……..he had already received the handshakes…..Franklin was warm………after Jamie failed the sacrifice, I thought he was in trouble…………. Tony was putting everyone on notice……..Franklin and you know who.

Pitch count has little to do with this……with little run support, I’m sure Jamie was startled to get the call in the 8th……… a kid wants the scoreless inning and a chance at the win…… that was a gritty performance…….in which his entire delivery was in flux……… That was a huge challenge to Franklin, and more interestingly, to the front office who “legislate” Franklin’s role……… if Franklin burns down, does the smoke obscure the fact that Pujols continues to be “gullible” at the plate………. Berkman is hurting…….and you know he’s taking anti-infams as it is……… Theriot continues to make meaningless contact…….. he doesn’t strike out much, thats for sure………… the scouts are all over AP……..and our nose is going to be in the West for 2 weeks………… The reds are choking on testosterone after “marrying” the Brewers this weekend……….we better start rolling here….. that was a pitcher of modest talents who just shut us down………..

        • blingboy says:

Other orgs already know everything there is to know about what Albert can do, so why are scouts ‘all over him’?

To try and get a hint what he will do four years from now I assume.

          Albert’s challenge is to play like he’s . . . . 31.

          (notice effective use of westydots)

AP is in the best shape I’ve seen him in BB……….his swing is fine. He “could” cover the holes with viable tactical options………….a response to what the opposition is will to give up…….. he isn’t doing it. He is back to taking first pitch strikes…………… nobody would throw the ball center cut waist high fastball to AP…..unless they were pretty sure he is going to look a them…………. from then on, “his assumption” that someone should do it again………..fades into the dust. Bud Black was a pitching coach……..they came ready to “bait” the AP formula for success……….. and did so. They know he doesn’t want the walk now………. and can easily be led to reach the “attempted pull double” or the ground ball single. Thats where the 4 rally killers are born. This is not a Rhodes Scholar……… he reserves his right to find and punish the mistake above all other scenarios. And that is a pull shot…..upper deck…..fans cheering. A guy that strong should have ten opposite field shots a year, especially the way he is pitched……he is never in position. His body and hands are always search for glory. He lags his bat head thinking he can flip it out to right for the HR…….. Think of how many fly outs you’ve already seen to RT Center/ Right field………in just three games……..let alone the weak DP grounders…………..most all in an AB that would have resulted in a walk if he would have stayed back and balanced……………………the WC dots are very potent in your closing…..makes me think you suspect he is 34……….with their devilish staccato……….

I just finished watching the Mariners/Athletics game from earlier today on MLB.TV. Is it possible for the AL to finish a game in under three hours? Holy smoke it was like watching paint dry and I cut time off by skipping the commercial breaks. Extra inning games have to be excruciating.

    • blingboy says:

Perhaps the greater number of commercials that can be fit into a three hour game helps make up for few viewers??

While tangentially related at best, I received this on Friday:

CARDS OPENER WAS MOST-WATCHED OPENER EVER ON FOX SPORTS MIDWEST

Yesterday’s opening day game was the highest-rated Cardinals season or home opener ever on FOX Sports Midwest. The Padres-Cardinals telecast generated a 13.3 household rating in the St. Louis DMA, according to Nielsen Media Research.

That’s up 11 percent from last year’s home opener (11.9 vs. Houston), and tops the previous high of a 13.0 for the 2005 home opener vs. Milwaukee.

A 13.3 rating equates to approximately 167,000 St. Louis households tuning it on average during the game. Viewership peaked in the 11th inning at a 17.4 rating, which translates to 219,000 households.

FOX Sports Midwest is in its 18th season of Cardinals telecasts. Last year the Cardinals posted the highest local-market TV ratings in Major League Baseball, averaging a 9.5 on FOX Sports Midwest.
