Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

64 former Cardinals in big league spring camps

One of Josh Jones’ projects each spring is to comb the spring training rosters of all of the other 29 MLB organizations and locate all of the former Cardinals in major league camps. His 2011 census follows.

This year, there are 30 ex-Cards players currently on MLB 40-man rosters. That includes several players that actually never appeared with St. Louis, including Rule 5 pitcher Brian Broderick. The former Springfield hurler must stick with Washington or be placed on waivers and could potentially return to the Cardinals organization.

In addition, 34 other former Cardinals players are in spring training camps, trying to make their new clubs as non-roster invitees. Both lists follow.

Colby Rasmus just drew his first walk of the spring in his 32nd plate appearance.

Josh does a great job, just like Matt Carpenter.

  3. blingboy says:

A reasonable 25 man squad could be put together from that 40 man roster list.

  4. blingboy says:

    No 3B depth problem.

one thing i wanna bring up is look how many are home grown cardinals & how well are they playing as we speak

Why are Hamilton and MCarpenter getting so much face time? I’m looking at ABs and innings in the field.

With all the guys in camp, playing time is at a premium. The regulars have to get ready, so there is only so much game time to look at possible bench guys. Greene, Craig, Hamilton and MCarpenter are getting a real good look.

Among regulars, Jay and Rasmus are getting the most time.

    Missed a couple:

    Alberto Castillo – Orioles NRI
