  2. crdswmn says:

I guess no one is talking today. :)

  3. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Colby is tightening up his left arm pit again Crd………….that makes his loading move too tense and to short…………….creating hesitation and indecision…..in his pitch selection… (again)…………..there is the telltale pop up to left…………… its ground hog day………….. it makes him very quick……….to be wrong………………..

  4. crdswmn says:

    Grand Salami!

  5. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Baker walks 3 and 4 to get to Colby……………it almost worked…….Arroyo gave him the one pitch he loves.

  6. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

    Great tactical error by Lopez………………………:)

Bronson is their best pitcher……….hard to believe Dusty did that. He must be pissed about the HR pitch.

  7. crdswmn says:

I hope the rain delay doesn’t affect Waino’s pitching.

  8. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Waino is finished CRD……………..it already too long………..that’s one of the reason that they will be slow in field preparations.

  9. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Still can’t get over Dusty getting on Bronson…………………… the pitch selection made him look bad because he called for the pitch around of Holiday only to see BA give Colby his kill pitch.

This is all traceable back to the Jim Edmond blunder………..it appears that Philips took it the way we both thought he might…………………..showing up Arroyo may be the worst blunder of all. He is a sensitive guy.

  10. crdswmn says:

Some more runs would be nice. I don’t trust our bullpen.

  11. crdswmn says:

I wonder how much money Mo paid Brandon Phillips? :) :)

  12. crdswmn says:

    I love sweeps.

  13. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Historically, Brandon has been one of the most difficult to control crd. He suffered the Griffey Jr years as the small dog and finally came into his own as the team leader and spokesman after his abdication. The addition of Rolen was accommodated. The addition of Springer and Izzy was a bad signal…. Edmonds broke the Camels back. His leadership role being complete over run by Jocketty. The Reds are a good team………..now they see Florida at a bad time…… that whopping might just have put them away……………………………….But then we have our problems with the girlish and over paid KL to sour our existence. It could be the last GM with a foot free of gunshot that wins it all.

Is this the smooze job you’d like Brian. My favorite was “clearing salary for next year”……….what a joke.

  15. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

One other tidbit. There were five Scouts in the official section last night……..guns +watches+ forms. I only recognized the Philly. Couple of Cards guys. 2 others weren’t revealing much.
The non declaration of Sundays starter has as much to do with Garcia’s head as it does Lohse’s. Tony wants to keep them on their toes and minimize tension build up. Dave is a smart cookie.

  16. CariocaCardinal says:

uhhg. Lohse has been announced already for Sunday.

  17. blingboy says:

    Nice reporting Westy.

Who is Hill. Why is he here?

  18. Nutlaw says:

Uhhg? Lohse needs to get in there and sink or swim. He’s a better pitcher than the team’s other number five options if he’s right, and you know it.

  19. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

temp in case La Rue was stiff from the fight…………………. Dempster/ Lohse …….he just beat Leicum. They will likely pick and choose with Garcia, getting him favorable match ups….Every win counts now.

  20. CardFanSince57 says:

Just as important as Adam’s 17th victory is the fact that he is back down below 2.00!

‘Twas said at the very outset; “If our resurgent offense remains consistent, it is probable that we will enjoy the sweetest, most satisfying and most meaningful sweep of the season”. Sho’ ’nuff! The way that the Granny was set-up in the fifth inning today was classic: After Jon Jay had blasted another one his doubles to begin setting the table, Albert was intentionally walked. Then, in an effort to paint the corners while pitching around Matt, Arroyo wound-up walking him and loading the bases! Arroyo then served-up Colby’s favorite pitch (the ol’ “low-and-in”) twice and he fouled-it off both times. That’s the “sucker ball” which had been golfed into the right field bleachers for nearly every one of his homers. The mistake today was a pitch directly over the plate, which Colby whacked very far over dead center field!

In the seventh inning, Matt drove-up the count by 9 pitches and then finally walked. Colby’s subsequent single was followed by Yadier’s RBI single (into dead center field). Skip then got his 3rd hit of the game for another RBI. Weak performances were witnessed again by Boggs (putting two runners one) and Miller (allowing 1 of the runners to be knocked in). After Cordero shut us down in the 9th inning, our nerves were fried when one of Franky’s prayers was sent deep into center field (and thankfully caught by Colby) and another of his prayers was sent deep into left field (and thankfully caught by Matt). He otherwise managed to close the game with a groundout.

Now that our offense has been proven to be consistently firing on all cylinders, there ought not be any reason that we cannot widen the gap between ourselves and those who are now dazed and coughing in our exhaust. We should enter September at least 10 games ahead, at least 20 games over .500 and with our Ace being a 20 game winner!

blingboy, Hill is a AA Springfield sensation (22 home runs). He’s here, logistically, because it is faster than bringing a catcher in all the way from the West Coast…

  21. CardFanSince57 says:

I’ll be happy to see a guy, his childishness and character deficiencies nothwithstanding, who pitched 7 innings through high wind, giving up only 1 run and striking-out 9. If he should revert to his pre-surgery ways after he gets back with us, however, I won’t remain so happy…

  22. CariocaCardinal says:

    Lohse’s pre-surgery FIP 3.77

  23. CardFanSince57 says:

Carioca, with regard to Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP), please give me a perspective on “3.77″. For instance, what would be a great FIP, a mediocre FIP and an unacceptable FIP?

  24. CariocaCardinal says:

Compares equally with ERA. Stands for “feild Independent Pitching. Measures only those things the pitcher theoretically controls (HR’s, BB, K’s). The theory is that other types of hits (non-HR’s) are mostly a function of luck.

    Some others.

    Wainright 2.97
    Garcia 3.42
    Carpenter 3.79
    Franklin 3.73
    Hawksworth 5.27
    Miller 4.54
    Suppan 5.54

    Lester 3.10
    Josh Johnson 2.29
    Arroyo 4.59

  25. CardFanSince57 says:

So then, with regard to FIP, we could say that 5.00 would be the threshold of unacceptable, 4.00 would be the threshold of mediocre, 3.00 would be the threshold of good and 2.00 would be the threshold of great (and anything less than 2.00 would be phenomenal).

Therefore… Lohse’s pre-surgery FIP, unlike his mediocre ERA, was fairly good. I am pleasantly surprised. Thank you!

  26. CariocaCardinal says:

There is another stat xFIP (expected FIP) which tries to normalize for HR’s. Basically saying that over time your HR’s will reach their average. Since Lohse’s HR total is really low and this is what brings his FIP down, he suffers greatly with xFIP (5.13). I don’t like xFIP as it doesn’t measure what has actually happened but what someone thinks should have happened.

  27. CardFanSince57 says:

Noted! In fact, everything is being copied and pasted in the notebook that I told you about. I can’t thank you enough for the education you’ve been giving me. Since you are the purist (with regard to objectivity) that I’ve sized you up to be, it figures that the xFIP wouldn’t appeal to you…

  28. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

I was reading the “Lohse rehab thread” in the Scout forum…………good thread. Nicely discussed.

The answers to your query’s are right in front of you all…………..but they are hard to stomach for some so they are ignored…………………….. As the Kennedy release startled everyone,in truth, it got BD closer to his goal. The 4 million was irrelevant. He is going somewhere. Ludwicks potential value as a player wasn’t even considered. It was his cost in 2011 that was dealt with. The fact that SD suggested they facilitate the deal reducing Westbrooke’s cost… made it perfect. These decisions are purely financial. No one else was looking for Ludwick. ………………. The De Rosa deal was just an opportunity to sell tickets…………….cashing in prospect values for cash to avoid a PR night mare as AP was tearing up the world.

The Lohse contract just kept BD out of the Free Agent market……….at the time it appeared to be a deal…………….Penny had a trick contract………. 1 yr…….. in front of the market……….Westbrooke would need to be paid….You might want him if he continues to pitch well…..but that will be right in front of the AP negotiations…………..He is going to show you all what life with AP is going to be like………..hoping you will reject that reality…………… Albert comes alive after his last vulnerable moment……July 31st……..the game is on……..winning is always more expensive than a could old try………..Stadium cash flow is paramount for his interests……….until they take the presidency back………He is very wealth but cannot spend it here………. Jay’s hot streak…..Tony’s demands………just cover offering Maneuverability with fallback options……..all positions being developed right now……….. He knows what he is doing.

Gotay surprised me…………he should be here. We could use him. His function as a pinch runner would be invaluable. He has a quick bat and knows how to scale his options at the plate. His presents here would give Tony options in the middle infield freeing up Lopez………..once again, I think that is the point. I’m not sure that winning is in the business plan…………..Miles , Wynn, etc……..all laugh-er’s for the minimum. band aides for public perception……….

  29. blingboy says:

A lot has been going on both on and off the field right when I have had little time to soak it all up. The comments and discussion have helped a lot. Thanks to all.

All the off days coming up will make it hard to figure out what the rotation is, or will be. Looks like Westbrook might be the #3. Garcia wearing down and will most likely be a 5th guy unless Jake or Lohse imolate. All might go well, in which case its a heck of a rotation. When rosters expand and Suppan comes back, a nice long man.

I hate few things more than missing a Cards salami. Nice one Colby. Nice work in CF lately too, very nice.

This Jay guy is getting scary. He’s not this good. Or maybe he just never knew it.

Crdswmn was mor right than wrong about Yadi. He rocks.

  30. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Garcia is young BB. He will gain experience. That is huge. Play off experience is invaluable….. he is the future that needs to be cultivated.

Penny will be showing something here. Considering his behavior, they aren’t going to hand him a free advertising platform for his free agency…………………… Think of it Penny in the closer pool throwing at full tilt……………Garcia as the other situational left. Westbrooke is still unproven I would remind you……….. Lohse an unknown……………… Franklin looks better in the 7th or 8th. Pitching is good………having it is good. Penny will pitch for someone this month.

  31. CariocaCardinal says:

The only place Penny is pitching this month is minor league rehab (in the Cardinal’s system).

  32. crdswmn says:

    Thank you BB :) I won’t gloat. :)

  33. Nutlaw says:

WC, I’d buy into the whole money saving thing if they were actually slashing payroll year by year. The Ludwick trade was a bad one, but they’re still putting together a strongly competitive team year by year. They haven’t been pulling a Marlins by any stretch of the imagination. They paid big money to Holliday this off-season. Miles and Winn (there’s no ‘y’ in Winn, crowd) aren’t making any money, but neither would be the minor league bench guys whose jobs they squeezed out.

No team’s owner except the Yankees is out to spend at all costs in order to win. Baseball is a business and these guys are out to make money. Other teams can build to win and still turn a profit. It doesn’t all have to be a big rich Republican conspiracy…

  34. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

    I know Nut…………………………but it is………..I know that it is……

Pitching is getting some help……….but it is pitching carrying this team………… There is no reason not to fill the need at 3rd base. A real self motivated player would be wonderful…………..Freese may be finished even for 2011. We pitched through the meaningless Lopez throwing error today….. In the playoffs that starts a fire. That will cost you the game………..

Holiday finally got a little knee bend today…..that will help, he is still looking….Baker walk two guys to get to Colby who is on the edge of another slump cycle………….AP was handled nicely today………..he is sub-par against front line pitching……………… we are running better…….but not well. Brad Penny will be looking for action. He must be seen as available if he is to be moved before the 8/31………………..if he comes back to be a playoff hero for us………isn’t that just another cookie we can’t have in 2011……… Mo is looking for a 3rd bagger but he has no permission unless he is giving a equal amount of payroll away……………..We tried to sell Ludwick to SD in the Green deal…for 2 million to help pay his salary……..that’s how they knew what we were about……………….They provided two prospects just for being willing to take on salary….Ludwick’s. Indians were under the gun……….but we wouldn’t even absorb Westbrooke’s salary witouth relief…………… That is not a championship commitment………..Padre’s are broke, and they were going to do it…………………………… There is absolutely no way that they are letting Penny slide unless they are collecting on a policy……………as soon as he starts rehab, the claim ends………….you see any activity there…………he is playing BD………BD is playing him. He will start throwing next week.

  35. CariocaCardinal says:

Westie – who is available at 3B that you think the Cards should get? — regardless of real or imagined payroll restrictions.

Padres broke? That team makes far more profit than the Cards according to those that estimate such things.

If BD bought insurance on Penny, he’s one of the dumbest owners in sports – and he’s not.

Nut — don’t forget. Westie said last year that our opening day team salary would be in the low $80 millions including the $11 million we were going to pay Lugo. His insights into BD business plan haven’t exactly been spot on.

  36. blingboy says:

I was thinking there were already 40 on the 40-man before Hill.

Memphis is off today too, so plenty of time to swap catchers if anyone wants to.

Between Lohse and Penny, that’s getting close to 20% of team payroll that’s been on the DL. You don’t have to be a rich Republican to want to conspire your way around that.

  37. Brian Walton says:

bb, there are actually 42 now with Lohse and Penny on the 60-day DL not counting against the limit.
