Round Two: Cards
Are big contracts worth it?
Lets fire this up a little………notice the subtleties in word usage from the text of the question and the headline.
Take notice of this statement……….”You would think. But agent Scott Boras has managed to pit teams against each other and sometimes he’s been able to have teams bid against themselves (Alex Rodriguez, Texas) in long-term negotiations.”
Notice the innuendo about the Cardinal bidding for Holiday, but then naming the Rangers as the prime example………. there is a very important distinction here………. can you name it?
The Strauss comments and valuations are many………his timing…..his purpose? I wrote on these topic in the last 12 months…….. any recollections?
Since I’ve only recently come onboard on a regular basis, Westy, I am not acquainted with your views “on these topics”. While I certainly possess the intellectual prowess to be intrigued and tantalized with the scenario that I think you are suggesting, I am not certain that I am capable to fathoming it to the degree that you and others are able. Off the top, if you are not enlarging the wizardry of Boras beyond what he actually wields, then he is a force to be reckoned with, of stupendously diabolical proportions!
At face-value, the topic itself presents nearly the imponderable profundities that I suspect you are presenting. I wish that my computer had the capability for me to have heard Brian’s broadcast. Hopefully, he will share (literarily) the gist of the discussion. I certainly side with Joe Strauss (“Did the Cardinals overpay? Almost certainly. Is it a bust contract? If you know the answer to that one, go buy a lottery ticket”). His statement underscores what the reader (“jfmoyn”) said, “It’s easy to say that big contracts aren’t the way to go, but it’s entirely different to try build a World Series winner without them”.
Why would big time Cards sports writers talk about big long term contracts and somehow fail to mention Albert’s current deal? The ultimate example of one that was worth it. I’m sure it just slipped their minds.
Yadi is having a hard time staying in the lead in the all-star vote. .250ish just isn’t all star calibre I guess, however good a catcher he is.
There is much to be said about defense, but a lot more to be said about the combination of superior defense and effective offense…
57, on the other thread you mentioned Albert talking optimistically about him and Matt getting scary good at some point. I expect Matt to heat up sooner or later. But we can’t expect Babe Ruth. Last year he was hot as can be after he got here and ended up with 13 homers in 62 games. Hardly Ruthian numbers. But the combo of him and Albert both hot, with the cast of characters we have would be scary indeed.
It has not occurred to Albert, nor will it, that another possibility is that he will continue to slug .100 pts off his usual, Matt will pick it up to the point of sucking less, and the Luddys, Colbys, Freeses, etc will carry the team into the post-season, with Albert being one of rather the engine that drives the team’s success.
P.S. I was just knocked unconscious by a flying pig and when I came to Matt was getting high fives in the dugout.
Right-on 57. The complete player.
Boys, I’m watching the A’s feed and announcers…………….if you have MLB choices, listen in.
They know Matt well. At 3/1 they said…….he should have crushed that……….. when he hit the bomb, they had that resigned feeling about being crushed by the superstar????????????? This reminded me that Matt is feeding on his A’s experience tonight….bingo HR………..
they also said Pujols swinging 3/0 was certainly unusual……. a response to the challenge?……….. bingo………. the untold, difficult to recognize anymore competition for Alpha.
Could it possibly be the oil n’ water negation of which you spoke, Westy?
By the way, we have two different pages going tonight… Are we going to go to this one or remain with the preceding?
blingboy, I am reconciling Molina’s error with the point you made on this page…
After this game (and going “Oh, for…!”), if Molina doesn’t snap out of it, they’ll be calling him, “Ol’ Mendoza Molina!
