Wainwright joins Cardinals two-hit complete game list

Adam Wainwright (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)When Adam Wainwright tossed a two-hit complete game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers Friday night, he joined a long list of  St. Louis Cardinals pitchers who pitched a no, one or two hitter. Specifically, his was the 97th such game since 1952.

It was Wainwright’s first entry on the list, however, where 11 pitchers had at least three. Bob Gibson being on top is not surprising, but some of the other names are.

Here are all the Cardinals pitchers with three or more, followed by the entire list.

  1. blingboy says:

Check the math on Haddix, top list.

  2. CardFanSince57 says:

A conscientious proof-reader is worth his weight in gold: An astute observation, blingboy! Harvey Haddix did indeed pitch THREE two-hitters for the Cardinals. Interestingly, in the three full seasons that he spent with the Cardinals (with whom he had begun his career), in each of which he was an All-Star, he had also pitched 41 complete games!

I am in awe of Adam Wainwright! Since he is yet early in his career, it is not unreasonable to expect that he will exceed Ernie Broglio’s total of seven. Certainly, he will rack-up more than Gibson’s single no-hitter (perhaps as many as three, assuming that he remains as a Cardinal)!

  3. blingboy says:

I picked a good game to attend 57. Wainy was especially good in the 1st and 2nd getting around the doubles. Then mowing them down.

Next best was Colby. You mentioned the throw which was superb, and he hit the homer off a lefty. Throws and lefties have been sore spots. Maybe Westy is right about the TCNB Colby bashers deserving the credit, getting Colby straighted out despite RC’s meddling with cage sessions and what-not. Would have been even more effective if our friend Jumbo had piled on instead of always being so nice.

Next best was our guy (can’t remember who) tagging and avancing from 1st to 2nd on a long fly. Heads up.

The other side of the coin is that the Brewers have stinky pitching. And I don’t know why Brendan didn’t take third on that play at the plate.

Ottovino might get his first big league win today, 10-9 :)

As to the article, the name I was surprised to not see was Adujar. The complete games numbers from the old days are crazy.

  4. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

I can see a number of problems being solved by the Cardinals just hiring RC as a special assistant hitting instructor……………………………… Then he could share the money with us (:

  5. blingboy says:

Make that double secret special hitting instructor.

  6. JumboShrimp says:

The Cards are rumored to be signing OF Randy Winn, released by the Yankees. Winn is a switch-hitter, very experienced and can play CF. If this comes to pass, Winn could contribute usefully off the bench. If this happens, perhaps Jon Jay would return to Memphis, to get steady play.

Its good for the Cards to strengthen the team. Another talent to get is a starting pitcher. While its welcome them for Ottavino and Walters to gain ML experience, they seem iffy for completing 6 innings. Now its June, losing teams are beginning to release a few pitchers, because somebody has to take the blame. A veteran starter might come available. Ottavino and Walters should consider that each start they receive is an audition for another.

  7. CardFanSince57 says:

With regard to Colby’s homer, I am hoping that it represents the crucial turning-point in his battle against southpaws. May the day be hastened when he can be comfortably inserted into the line-up whenever we face a left-hander. With his confidence now being raised, I would be thrilled to see him get a single against Narveson this afternoon (it would prove that yesterday’s homer was no fluke and that he is indeed on his way to be as much of a threat against lefties as he is against righties)…

  8. CardFanSince57 says:

Sure wish that we could afford Cliff Lee…

  9. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Well the Winn deal is done……………. Jay is down………. He is a competitor with skills well within his defined rolls…………… He will try to win playing time………… I expect that to be interesting.

  10. Nutlaw says:

I don’t really see the upside in rostering Winn over Jay at this stage in their respective careers. Winn will be 37 years old in a few days and has seen his production at the plate decrease dramatically over the past couple of seasons. The Yankees cut ties with him for good reason.

  11. blingboy says:

Why Winn now and not Edmonds last winter? Maybe get some Jimmy feedback while he’s in town, if a media guy has the nards.

  12. CardFanSince57 says:

Like Nutlaw and blingboy, I am rather puzzled about the Winn signing. I really don’t believe that there is anything remaining to be squeezed from the dregs of Winn’s distinguished career and Jon Jay has definitely proven to be a vital spark in our offense. Instead of being concerned about another hitter, I believe that attention and money ought to be focused upon the signing of a quality pitcher…

  13. blingboy says:

Don’t hold your breath on the money 57. Winn and Miles were DFA so the Cards are only responsible for paying major league minimum wage. So niether costs more than the call up they replace. That’s what scares me about Thompson getting DFA the other day. No way does BDW spend any more money this early, if ever. The Winn signing does improve the team’s diversity at least.

  14. CardFanSince57 says:

Perhaps the change of scenery from the Big Apple will improve the switch-hitting “diversity” above the Mendoza line.

  15. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

    Some considerations.;

A veteran player doesn’t spend allot of time dreaming “power dreams”.

He is a switch hitter that uses all fields………you will see him on the double switch with Colby when there are viable situational lefties put in to shut down young Rasmus.

He is there as insurance and to help guide young Colby to to a more productive less opportunistic roll definition………………. less susceptible to the “ups and downs I would think.

Production in the St Louis environment will be easy for him. You will all be singing his praises soon enough. Best move in a long time.

  16. JumboShrimp says:

It is good for Jay to play daily at Memphis. He is not going to get better playing one day a week in the majors. Jay did a nice job here. This only helps his confidence.
The Cards watch the Yanks and Red Sox like vultures, waiting for someone to get kicked overboard. Last summer it was Julio Lugo. This summer, its Winn. Winn is a good fit. He can switch-hit and backup any OF position.
This tells us Mo is not content and is looking to add. Now that Winn and Mitey Miles are on board, we need a couple of pitchers. Mo will be working on this during June/July. Go Mo Go.

  17. Nutlaw says:

Er, Winn will turn 36, not 37.

I mean, the move doesn’t hurt anything, but I dunno. I agree with the others that a veteran starting pitcher would be most helpful at this point.

  18. blingboy says:

Would have been a good time to play Miles instead of Skip against the lefty. Interesting.

  19. JumboShrimp says:

The Cards seem in a lot better situation with Ottavino than if they were starting Narveson. It cannot be a happy thing to be a Brewers fan nowadays.

  20. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

I hope we beat these guys senseless………………and then pull out our shirts in the end……I’m unable to steal this feed so I’m watching on game day. Thumping these guys is just what this team needs. Fresh kill………..

  21. JumboShrimp says:

As to the question of Winn now and not Edmonds last winter, Jim likes to play a lot. There is nothing wrong with this, but the Cards did not have enough at bats for him. The Brewers gave Edmonds more of a chance to play. With Winn, he is going to fit in. With Edmonds, for sentimental reasons, you would like to play him more and its hard to sit him on the bench. But with Winn, there is not the same pressure to play him more than you need to. If Edmonds were on the bench, he could be a big presence looming over Rasmus. Its best that Jim be a Brewer, at this stage.

  22. blingboy says:

    Makes sense Jumbo.

If Milwaukee could move further away from Chicago they would be less Cub-like. It must be the lake water.

  23. bigchieftootiemontana says:

why pull Ottavino then ? protecting him from the loss ? He only had 75 pitches and 5 innings, Reyes failed miserably. Did I miss an injury?

  24. blingboy says:

Last time he was left out there to get battered for a while. Maybe trying to get him the win?? Your guess as good as anybodys Chief.

  25. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

I’m not watching the game Chief…………. hate it when they score a bit………..every wants to lead the rout………and they all stop playing as a team………………. don’t tell me this kid figured it out. I know better………..Octto did his job……he is not a shut down pitcher.

  26. blingboy says:

Its really encouraging to see Colby doing well against the lefty again. Joe Buck just mentioned Colby’s dad is in town ‘helping him with his swing’. How many dads get a mention on national TV. Probably cost RC an expensive dinner.

  27. blingboy says:

I had forgotten about Wynn’s odd stance, with his front foot toward 3rd, almost facing the pitcher. Weak grounder to short, would have been easy DP.

  28. blingboy says:

Westy, Freese just rolled his ankle, taken out limping a little. Didn’t look too bad.

  29. blingboy says:

The day off followed by the complete game explains the quick hook for Otto, just needed to get the rust off some guys.

  30. JumboShrimp says:

The little legs of the Mitey One score the Game Winner.
Tony Rasmus is a great baseball teacher. He also knows his son could use new lenses. Good work Tony. (And no thanks to fans who boo’d Colby. We remember who you are.)

Good game by Ottavino, from Northeastern U. And Mitch Boggs, UGa. Next week, lets draft some more collegiate pitchers, Mo.

  31. blingboy says:

    Good call on Miles, Jumbo.

It’s good that Colby’s dad responded to the fan reaction in an agressive way.

Any idea if it was the right ankle Freese had all the trouble with?

  32. blingboy says:

It was the left ankle that was operated on.

  33. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

I finally got a look at the game. RC, those were some nice tweaks. I like the front foot placement, and the flexibility that it creates for his kick. The tension in his abdominal’s by turning away is causing him to pull the hands out into the Zone instead of just through it. All good.

AP is getting better extension too. He is collapsing his left knee a bit, weight going to the toe which is slowing down his hip turn. Someone is figuring him out.

  34. blingboy says:

Luhnow: “”We certainly can identify specific needs: lefthanded pitching, power and speed.”

Doesn’t every club say that every year? I guess Brian is hunkered down getting stoked for tomorrow’s draft.

Tonight we face a mediocre lefty for the third day in a row. That should play into Colby’s hand.
