Two of three St. Louis Cardinals starters working on quality start streaks saw them end over the weekend
Coming into this past weekend, seven major league starting pitchers were working to extend their season-opening streaks of quality starts* of seven games or more. Three of the seven were from just one of the 30 teams, the St. Louis Cardinals.
Now the list is down to five, and just one is a Cardinal.
After taking losses in subpar outings in Cincinnati on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, Adam Wainwright and Brad Penny ended their 2010 quality runs at seven each. Only Friday night winner Jaime Garcia carries the Cardinals quality flag forward into this week.
The Cardinals certainly have nothing to be embarrassed about. Even after the two non-quality starts over the weekend, the starting staff has 30 in 38 games, the most in MLB.
Wainwright and Penny had been at this even longer. Going back to include the end of last season, Wainwright’s quality start streak ended at 12, while Penny’s was stopped at nine.
Researcher Tom Orf went back into the annals of baseball and could find no other staff since at least 1920 (excluding the years of 1940-51) to match the 2010 Cardinals with three pitchers compiling season-opening quality start streaks of at least seven games.
* A quality start is defined as an outing of six innings or more while allowing three or fewer runs.

I was worried Brian. That is the first time I can remember you going 2 days with out a new blog entry. It is rare you go one!
I did miss one day this weekend. The Ludwick piece went up at midnight on Friday night/Saturday morning. Spent a day carrying furniture then trying to catch up. That manual labor stuff is not for me!
I remember once hearing a DJ on the radio say he had nothing to complain about and that he had a good life — he didn’t have to kill his own meat and didn’t have to lift anything over 50lbs. That always stuck with me.
Tonight’s game gives Lohse something to build on, even if its just the Nationals. He has given up one earned run in 6 innings. This should help his morale.
My morale is helped by return of Felipe Lopez.
Next, I look forward to the return of the one and only Aaron Miles.
The Cards like guys getting more than one season under their belts at AAA, with examples including Wainwright, Anthony Reyes, Stavinoha, Schumaker, Ryan Franklin, Ryan Ludwick. PJ Walters has spent two seasons at Memphis and seems to be continuously improving to the point where he might now hold his own in the majors. Allen Craig, Bryan Anderson, and Tyler Greene have now each returned to Memphis for 2nd seasons of finishing school. A team has utter control over players and many can spend as many years as they need in the minors, even if a few streak through rapidly, like Pujols, Molina, Rasmus, and Jaime Garcia, subject of this thread.
While only the Nationals, at home, the Cards needed to take a baby step toward improvement, as they did last night. Lopez did not get a minor league rehab, so may take a little while to warm up. Thank goodness his elbow has responded. Its good to have Felipe batting leadoff. Skip may be suited to the 8th slot in the lineup.
The Cards traded Julio Lugo to the Orioles in March. Julio and Cesar Izturis are hitting terribly for the Os, as badly as Brendan Ryan. But this still tells us something. Do we want Tyler Greene sitting on the bench or playing everyday at AAA? Mo chose everyday, because if he plays well at Memphis, Greene could have trade value in July. When Cesar and Julio can still be found on ML rosters, some team and its suffering fans will value Greene.
Baseball can be hard to figure. The Cubs are getting production out of expensive disappointments last year, Fukudome, Soriano, and Carlos Silva. Lilly is back, Gorzelanny is pitching ok. Rookie OF Colvin and SS Castro are contributing. Free agent Byrd is hitting .340 in CF. Soto is a good hitting catcher. With $147MM in salaries, the Cubs have some players. With Lou in charge, they could jel and take a run at winning the division.
Their problems are expensive 3B Ramirez has slumped and expensive Carlos Zambrano has been turned into a reliever. Strange stuff.
Dont forget the that the Cubs still have a $14 million dollar albatross at 1B.
Lee is in the last year of his contract, a better situation for the Cubs than Zambrano and Ramirez.
Also Silva, Fukudome, and Soriano show a guy can slump and bounce back, so Lee could warm up a bit. The Cubs have so many players, they should challenge.
