Kyle Lohse deserved a win on Saturday after tossing seven innings of one-run ball for the St. Louis Cardinals, but instead took a no-decision.
Right-hander Kyle Lohse made his best start of the season on Saturday for the St. Louis Cardinals, departing after seven innings with a 3-1 lead, only to have the bullpen given the runs back to the visiting Cincinnati Reds. The Cardinals eventually prevailed, 6-3, giving Lohse the third no-decision this season for a St. Louis starter going seven or more innings allowing one or no earned runs.
It was not a rare occurrence, having been the 60th such start in the last decade and one month for the Cardinals.

From a Cardinals historical perspective, Bob Forsch had the most such career games with 18. John Tudor was next with 12, followed by Matt Morris at 11, and Joe Magrane, Luis DeLeon and Chris Carpenter with ten each.
Far more unusual is going seven or more, yielding one or no runs and taking the loss. That has happened just 14 times in the last decade. The frequency is increasing with ten of them in the last four years.
Joel Pineiro was victimized by this lack of support three times last season alone. Had he deservedly won those games, his 2009 record would have been a superb 18-9 instead of an ok 15-12, reminding us how unjust the win statistic can be.

The Cards look set to cruise this year, unless undone by injuries. If Lohse can bounce back to his fine 08 performance, they have a formidable rotation that puts the relievers and hitters in a good position to succeed too. Down 6 runs, the Reds got to see 95-97 mph pitches from Motte and Boggs, while fans of the Giants and Royals are treated to watching Wellemeyer and Thompson ply their trade.
Brian, do you or Tom have any idea if that is out of the norm for most teams (6 times a year). It has happened to the Cards at least 4 times every year over this span.
I see your point, though compared to themselves, these games are coming more rapidly early this season. Perhaps when the offense really gets rolling, the low-scoring close games will be fewer.
And I see your point, we are on the pace for about 18-20 this year ( i think the most the last 10 years is 8). I see it as more a function of good pitching than bad hitting so I doubt the rate will slow much if the pitching stays incredible the way it has.
Stltoday has Blanton vs Garcia tomorrow. Since I thought he was on the DL I checked the Phillies site. They have the probables as Garcia vs. Hamels, but say Blanton coming back ‘may’ push Hamels back to Tuesday. So it may be Garcia vs fellow lefty Hamels tomorrow, which may mean some lineup shifting by Tony. it may be Garcia vs just off DL Blanton. So, my whole point was finding when Halliday was pitching and vs who. Stltoday has it Lohse vs Halliday Thursday. But if its Hamels tomorrow, then maybe it would be Penny vs Halliday Wednwsday. I’m placing a few wagers with my brother in Philly, that’s the reason for caring one way or the other.
Phils order is Blanton, Hamels and two TBDs.
Philies will be a good test for Garcia. Of both his pitching skills and his mental skills.
Halliday pitched Saturday BB. He is up Thursday against Lohse. Phillies just destroyed Santana, a good sign for Garcia. We will have to score 6+ to win any of those games. With good pitching.
Lets not be hasty. The Phillies are only 14-10 and have played mostly the Nats, Braves and such. Garcia, Wainy and Penny could do a number on them. Hopefully, Garcia will not choose tomorrow to implode.
Manuel is pretty smart, they probably won’t pitch to Pujols, and they will run on Colby’s arm until he proves he can throw somebody out. He’s certainly already noticed the Cards increased use of hit and run. And he will try some psych stuff on Garcia.
The Phillies feast on ego’s. Do we have any to match? Colby is going to have to live with what he’s done. He is very likely going to take that ego reduction to the batters box. Not so good. Cinci beat themselves. Its hard to see the Philly’s doing that. Freese is feeding. He does have a beautiful swing as I have noted.
The hit and runs………..like today’s beauty, are Tony’s attempt at getting guys at the plate to take contact over personal heroism. Its backfiring 60 percent of the time.
I see that Garcia is favored in Vegas. I’m a little surprised at that. We have huge wild card unknowns. Its a band box. They haven’t got the greatest location pitchers. Maybe the hostile environment wakes Holiday up. A split would be an accomplishment.
Freese has batted 5th a couple times when Colby has been 4th due to AP or MH sitting out. Tonight, everybody is playing and for the first time Freese has been moved ahead of Colby, Freese 5th Colby 6th. Deep meaning there no doubt. ?
I asked TLR about it this afternoon. He said in the times he hit there previously (three times), Freese did well so it doesn’t bother him. He is seeing the ball as good as anyone right now.
Reporting from Philly, I will have a Notebook up on the Globe-Democrat later tonight and an extended version posted on TheCardinalNation.com in awhile.
Sorry you’re in Philly, guess somebody has to do it. Does it still smell like a urinal? Looking forward to the coverage.
bb, that is Wrigley. Other than being cheap for home runs, Citizens Bank Park is a pretty good facility.
Right, never been there. I was thinking of Veterans. Was there a few times, it stunk pretty bad. Also saw a game at Connie Mack Stadium (Shibe) in 1970 when I was supposed to be at the Smithsonian in D.C. My dad got in some trouble over that.
