Brian Walton's news and commentary on the St. Louis Cardinals (TM) and their minor league system

TCN blog’s Freese article featured on KSDK Channel 5

On Sunday, May 2, our recent article about rookie St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese’s Thursday performance, “Freese’s six RBI in historical context,” will provide the basis of a segment of the “This Week in Cardinal Nation” television program, shown every Sunday at 10:00 A.M. on KSDK Channel 5 in St. Louis.

I am very proud this blog has been selected a fifth time overall and first this season to be highlighted by our good friends at Channel 5, the Sunday home of the St. Louis Cardinals.

For those outside the St. Louis viewing area or for those who miss Sunday’s show, depending on guidelines for showing game footage, if a copy of the segment can be loaded on KSDK.com, it will be added here as well.

The fastball strikeout was very important for Lohse. He isn’t engaging hitters and its already hunting him. That was the first time he asserted himself. He lacks intensity. He will need runs to win this. At least 4 or more.

  2. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Absolutely incredible. No lesson learned yesterday. Incredible base running by Ludwick too.

I like Dusty. He had every intention of pitching around Colby…….and couldn’t. He also sees that
Pujols has made a significant stance adjustment…..to the positive. 2/0…..put him on. He is watching a very well scouted baseball team.

  3. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Man, Skip is a first pitch bed wetter. Notice that Ryan does not have the big follow through in recent at bats. Somebody’s working.

  4. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Lets hope Pujols or Holiday goes off here. They are both due and it Homers fate I think. Lohse is focusing and LaRue is doing a good job managing him. We need to score or Lohse will give it up eventual.

  5. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Ludwick has taken some good at bats. Everyone else…….not so much. Imagine being swept by Cinci at home, them playing Philly………..not so good.

  6. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Freese mad such a nice swing there. Happy to take it deeps, threw the right hand at a perfect moment. It took that to beat Bailey who is throwing well….tactically. We are well scouted.

  7. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Lohse has excepted LaRue call……..which is very aggressive. It is working well. His hitting is an indication of his comfort level. His breathing is also an indication of his struggle. He needs runs.

  8. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

One of the nice tactics used by all Reds pitchers is to “stress” Pujols. Albert likes to take his stance early. If he does, they will just look in on his as long as they can, keeping him in that stress position longer than he wants. They are all gaming this maneuver.

Lohse is in a good place. If they get him runs, it could be an important game. If Tony stays with him too long with the one run, it is likely to turn.

  9. CariocaCardinal says:

Posting only to keep Westie from breaking jumbo’s consecutive post record! :)

  10. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

I own it anyway. Tony and Duncan were stirring. That should be it for Lohse. If they’re smart..

  11. CariocaCardinal says:

How much more negative can one get. Up a run in the 2nd game of a 3 game home series and talking about getting swept.

  12. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Fascinating decisions by the Reds. Tony calls a hit and run 2/2 and Albert doesn’t offer but its a past ball. Dusty called that last fastball from the bench, going for the series knock out blow at the same time emasculating AP……….loses the bet………..up until that point he has been the superior manager.

  13. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

    Now I’m pissed.

  14. CariocaCardinal says:

3rd place by May Westie? Are sure that wasn’t 3rd best record? didn’t even get that negative. 2nd best record in all of baseball.

  15. WestCoastbirdWatcher says:

Brian, I could foresee a number of reasons you might want to fold today thread. I must admit it would be complicated advisement.

Good job wih the Freese article, Brian. Never can tell what article might get the extra attention. Over on TCN site, there seem to be two minor league pitcher’s of the month. The one you named the other day (Schneider?) and the one Dustin is talking about at Springfield

  17. Brian Walton says:

Thanks, bb. Yes, there are two pairs of awards every month and have been for the last four or five years. Sometimes the Cardinals in making their official award agree with us (as in the April Player of the Month Jon Jay) and sometimes we differ, as in the Pitcher of the Month where one picked Schneider and the other Gorgen.

  18. blingboy says:

I like Rasmus Freese 4-5 again. Stav will make ‘em pay.

  19. CariocaCardinal says:

So much for that Cinci sweep.

  20. CariocaCardinal says:

Glad to see Freese getting hits but even happier to see the xb hits. Freese as a .280-.300 singles hitter isnt worth that much. If it has some punch to it, it’s worth a lot.

  21. blingboy says:

Good point CC. To put it another way, the life expectancy of a singles hitting third baseman isn’t that great. Scu and Ryan are showing a little life at the plate.

It will be fun to see how they do on the road against ‘the yankees of the National League’.
