For at least the fourth time this year, The Cardinal Nation Blog has been selected as FOXSports.com’s Blog of the Day, achieved through this site’s association with Yardbarker. What brought the recognition was the Felipe Lopez pitching comparison to Jose Canseco, “Did Lopez risk a “Canseco” by pitching injured?”

If you’re one of the many first-time visitors here and consider yourself a St. Louis Cardinals fan, please look around, register and join the discussion. I think you will enjoy the fresh new articles and daily commentary.

The link to my McGwire article is featured on FOXSports.com’s main MLB page just under Ken Rosenthal and Tracy Ringolsby at the lower left under the heading “Blog of the Day”. But now that you are here, there is no need to go there, since the link will take you right back here.

Dbacks signed Wagner Mateo. $550K. If the eye thing is manageable, they might have a bargain.

As I understand the Shelby Miller situation. He is supposed to be working on his secondary pitches before moving up to face stiffer competition. I can’t find out anything about how that is going. Anybody know?

If Lopez does end up going down to injury, Gotay might come in handy.

Not sure how to get any better assessment than to review the boxscores. They say to me, “work in progress,” but it is awfully early…

  3. CariocaCardinal says:

bb, you can deduce some things from the stats. Miller is having success and striking out a lot of batters. His walk rate is reasonable but he is using a lot of pitches to strike out the batters. I would deduce from that that he is experimenting with pitches but not necessarily having control success though he is not giving up many hits. Once behind in the count he is probably reverting back to his standard fastball and just blowing it by guys to get the K’s.

  4. CariocaCardinal says:

Sounds like a lot of teams must agree with the Cardinal’s assessment of Mateo’s eye’s or his price wouldn’t have dropped so precipitously. Still, at $550K he could be a very good deal.

  5. Brian Walton says:

Not only a price drop, but over six months to find a new deal to his liking. Have to wish the young man all the best.

The thinking on the boxes sounds right CC.

When my work schedule eases off in a few weeks maybe I’ll make the trip to Davenport and see for myself. I spent a lot of time at O’Donnell stadium over the years. My only baseball injury happened there in the mid 70′s. I was over by the third base dugout in the front row and got hit in the face by Carney Lansford’s glove while he was reaching for a pop-up. Got a bloody nose. Stadium folks loaded me up with free food and drink (soda pop of course). Have been to the renovated stadium quite a bit too, but not much lately. It’s one of my favorite baseball places.

  7. blingboy says:

Brendan’s slow start and inability to handle the two spot means Luddy has to hit second. That puts Colby in the 5 spot, but we can’t have an automatic out behind Holliday against lefties. So we end up with tonights lineup.

Once Freese gets a little seasoning, and Tony feels confident not burying him at the bottom, that will help.

  8. blingboy says:

“Automatic out’ was harsh. 9 AB’s so far isn’t much of a sample. But the point still holds.

Freese looked weak whiffing on that hit and run DP. Tony probably already regrets putting him in the 6 spot.
