With the first in-season transactions of 2010 made on Wednesday, it is time for a refresh of the St. Louis Cardinals system roster matrix. This version will reflect all changes made until the short-season clubs begin play in mid-June. I plan to refresh the entire matrix at that time.
The 2010 season-opening view will remain unchanged. You can see it here.
If you are new to the site and aren’t sure what the Cardinals organization roster matrix is all about, here is quick summary:
At the time of this posting, the St. Louis Cardinals have 287 players under contract from top to bottom. The matrix places each one at his current assigned level in the system as well as by position. It is kept updated throughout the season as transactions occur.
Nowhere else will you find this current and comprehensive single-page view of the entire Cardinals organization.
Along with the major league club and the four full-season rosters, the players participating in extended spring training camp are also included. 44 of them are holdovers from regular minor league spring training, players that did not make a full-season club, joined by 21 new arrivals.
Don’t be concerned about the order of the players’ names within a team. They don’t signify anything other than often a rough approximation of alphabetical order. Roster rotation order and tandem assignments are noted when applicable.
The 37 players on the 40-man roster are called out in bold.
In a look ahead, the extended spring training players will either join full-season clubs as openings occur or will be augmented by this June’s draftees to staff the 2010 Batavia, Johnson City and GCL clubs. A number are also likely to be released.

Remember that at this point, there are not yet 2010 rosters for the short-season clubs, Batavia on down, so players are listed where they finished last season – where they will remain until there is a reason to move them.
Once there, just click on a player’s name to be taken to his individual profile page. For example, here is Adam Ottavino’s profile.

The roster matrix is helpful in terms of seeing the big picture, depth by position and rungs on the ladder.
In the big picture, there are a sufficient core of home-grown players to be competitive at AAA and AA. The Quad Cities team is 6-1 and beneath this team is a big taxi squad at Extended Spring Training (65 + 3).
Thus one main interest in the minors during 2010 will be how guys do at Quad Cities and how fast some can be promoted to Palm Beach to strengthen that team, while enabling other lads to get promoted out of EST. There could be a lot of moves between EST, QC, and PB during 2010.
I honestly don’t know what will happen in terms of moves as there are conflicting forces. One is to try to keep players at levels longer and not push them too quickly. The other is that if a club is consistently overmatched and/or dealing with a rash of injuries, a response is needed
Brian, on a player specific basis, I certainly do not know what the moves will be. But I still think there is a big picture: enough home grown guys are up to the AAA and AA for those teams not to embarass themselves. There seems a weakness at A+. While its just a week into the season, this is probably genuine and where the weak link is right now. OTOH there seems some talent at A- and guys stockpiled in EST. This seems a situation that could result in roster moves at the A level.
I doubt going slower has become an intended philosophy. It may instead owe to the players within the system and balancing opportunities to play.
The weakness in the middle of the system continues from last year. We will see if QC’s early success can be sustained. I suspect not. They are getting great pitching but a league-best 2.03 ERA will not continue. Their hitting is not good at all, averaging .215, 15th of 16 teams in the league.
I agree moving players more slowly is a convenient choice of terms when there is a logjam at the top. The vast majority of Memphis and Springfield are returnees.
Schumaker 2b
Ludwick rf
Pujols 1b
Holliday lf
Rasmus cf
Lopez ss
Molina c
Freese 3b
Lohse p
I really expected maybe a change today. I hope the Lopez move warrants the loss of range. I think Tony recognizes a dangerous trend right now……..one that has a happy go lucky Albert, contrasting a grinding Holiday, Freese and others. We need a blowout that gets some of these guys out of bed. I was kind of hoping to see Craig at first myself.
Cold QC hitters include Vasquez, Ryde-Rod, and Parejo. They need to warm up with the weather, since there are guys at EST happy to use their roster slots.
One possible move is Domnit Bolivar back to QC and Stidman to PB. Bolivar is still young (20) and he didnt exactly show mastery at QC last year.
Rocobaldo needs to step up at PB. He probably bought himself a little more time with a hot Spring but being 24 going on 25 he has to move up not down (and probably not even staying where he is is acceptable).
There are several pitchers at PB that would also need to step up or their careers could be in jeapordy- Thomas, Broderick, and Bradford among them. Bradford is coming off an injury season so he might get a little more time.
1B is also a trouble spot for PB though they have several candidates. The problem is that the Cards may not be ready to move the candidate next in line at QC (Adams) just yet, wanting him to get more seasoning at QC.
If some pitchers get off to decent beginnings at QC, they can be backfilled by Ferrara, Zawacki, or many other candidates at EST. The Cards may want to give a month or more playing time to the initial rosters, but then there are other players to give turns to. The more promotions out of EST, the more amateurs who can be added in June. The Quad Cities team should be interesting and worth a visit.
A guy who may step it up this year at PB is Jose Garcia. The Cards are playing him at SS. Since he can steal bases and has some dynamism, Garcia could fit well at SS.
Norris goes full and then walks Shu…………. Ludwick is thinking I’ll get a lick in before I do my job. Check swing double play? First pitch!……………the exceptions taken by these guys is why we don’t score runs. Not smart. Self interested. I pointed to it yesterday and here it is today. In all fairness, Pujols struck out trying to do the right thing…… The Lugo move lingers. No pressure for Lopez, Shu, Ryan………..especially at the 2 slot.
Norris is just pounding the outside against the big finishers. That’s what Houston thinks of our hitters. We need to stress this guy by swinging at strikes…..get to that pen.
Shu gets careful with a DP ball…..Keppinger does his job………run.
Keppinger has been good against Lohse…..especially away……….is Molina calling that pitch because he wants in on the 1st base action? unwise.
Shu needs to be looking away……..looks at 2 cherrys to score the run……..Ludwick does his job…………………………….. Albert………..over matched.
Norris must have said something to Lohse after his hit because Kyle was barking at him from second.
Lohse is changing speed effectively but your not see the straight change with no run support. They will get to him unless he can be a little more aggressive.
They pitched around Molina……..had a mystery conference on the mound. Appeared to be pitching around Freese and then a mistake. Norris is fatiguing.
Very nice sequence there by Lohse to Keppinger. Yadi and Tony played a huge roll there. Tony knows that’s likely the winning run on first with no outs. They got the DP.
RC………Colby is starting to press his hand back up. That was the pop up to LC. He is gravitating toward his old stance. As predicted………. its a struggle I know.
Lohse is through 7………..that should be it because we need offense as he is 2nd up. This team has no intensity.. To me this the unfortunate side of the Pujols factor”.
CC, Stidham is having a nice start, but it is only 15 at-bats. He barely managed a .700 OPS with QC last year, so it isn’t like he has been held back.
Game is over now……….tough luck for Lohse…….but some of us expected it.
Bottom line………… Tony really doesn’t have any options at this point. He is using Lopez. Shumaker sleeps ……..Holiday is capable of finding little interested in a game. Ludwick has a no contest for his batting order spot………..now Colby doesn’t. Ryan just wants to play…………. All scouts are watching a trend in which pitching low and away has no consequence………..you will see it allot for awhile………………. a team like Boston of Philadelphia would crucify you if they knew where to look for a pitch. Cards have quite a few family men……worried about there finish and power numbers, and maybe an opportunity to beat BD out of few dollars………………. MM may be getting to comfortable.
I agree Stidham is fine where he is for now. Part of his “history” is 713 at bats in the Atlantic Coast Conference, at Florida State. Given this amateur background, in recent years, the Cards would have just assigned a guy like Stidham to Palm Beach right out of spring training. They can shift him there, at at a time of their choosing.
Westie, we have options. Next time we see an RHP, TLR can give a start to Bryan Anderson, give us a fourth left swinger.
That ought to do it Jumbo.
Westie, TLR and JS are very partial to match-ups. Yadier has a batting average under .200. Anderson can give him some days of rest.
Brian, do you know how many middle infielders the Cards have had in the last 10 years that have put up a .700 OPS in the Midwest league straight out of college?
Jarret Hoffpauir 2004 (actually played 9 games at JC first)
Chase Vossel 2001
there also has been Alex Castellanos (2009) but he has played more games at non-middle infield positions in his career than middle infield (also a year older) and Aaron Luna (2008) who also has more non middle infield games than in the middle infield.
Right on, Carioca. Stidham went from college junior to Quad Cities, as did Jay and Robinson before him. It may just be a few at bats, but its probably not random chance Stidham has the best OPS at Quad Cities.
Another resemblence to Hoffpauir is both are non-speedy 2Bmen. Hoffpauir has a little more pop, Stidham gets matchup advantages more frequently.
Voshell was a SS out of Wake Forest Univ, 3rd round, between Narveson and Molina in 2000. In 2001, the Cards moved him to 3B, later OF. Removed from SS, he did not have enough offense. Stidham too was a SS, IIRC, and does not have the arm for it. But if Stidham can field 2B, he might hit for enough average. This will be what the Cards hope.
CC asked: “Brian, do you know how many middle infielders the Cards have had in the last 10 years that have put up a .700 OPS in the Midwest league straight out of college?”
Does that mean the performance was exceptional or the bar has been set very low?
I think nothing prevents it from being both
Schumakers OPS in the NYPa league during his intro to pro ball: 695. Skip’s now a million dollar guy.
Skip has a good arm and more speed, tools not reflected in an OPS. Its also possible to underestimate players who turn out in the long run to be useful.
Well, looks like our talking woke up the bats at PB – 7 runs in the first inning. Looks like Curtis has been activated.
Bradford (PB pitcher) didn’t listen as well. Gave 5 back in 1/3 of an inning before being yanked.
Anderson isn’t likely to get a start against lefty Oliver Perez tomorrow. Lopez will be at second base I presume, even though I’d like to see Schu in there. Will be interesting to see who plays CF.
