The last time the St. Louis Cardinals’ top two farm clubs have been in the post-season together was the same year that Lou Brock entered the Hall of Fame and Whitey Herzog’s club fell to the Kansas City Royals and Don Denkinger in the World Series.
That was 24 long years ago, in 1985.
In other words, just making the playoffs in the same year has never happened since the Cardinals moved their Triple-A club to Memphis in 1998 and their Double-A club arrived in Springfield, Missouri in 2005.
To actually find Cardinals championships at both levels at the same time, one has to go all the way back to 1980.
To help put into perspective how long ago that was, Springfield, MO is the Cards’ fourth Double-A stop since 1980 and Memphis is the Triple-A team’s third home during that time.
Even more ironic perhaps is the fact that the Cardinals’ 1980 Triple-A champion was located in Springfield – Springfield, Illinois, that is. The Double-A champs of 1980 were based in their long-time Arkansas home.
To delve into the Cardinals’ minor league club records and history, check out my series from the last off-season, and specifically these two articles:

“Cardinals in Double-A – 1966 to present”
Since I assembled the following for myself, I thought I would share it with others too. Here are the 2009 post-season schedules for the Pacific Coast League and Texas League.

Update: I should have also mentioned that the PCL winner will play the International League champ in the annual Triple-A Championship – Tuesday, September 22 at Oklahoma City’s Bricktown Ballpark (7:05 p.m. EST).
The playoff berths are earned the right way, mostly with signees from amateur ranks, rather than with loading up on minor league free agents. Perez, Barden, Maclane, Ring, Manning were minor league free agents for Memphis. Cannot recall any for Springfield.
I agree with your point, Jumbo. However, your case is even stronger than you presented. Barden, Ring and Manning were all brought in on the 40-man roster then later removed. MacLane was acquired via trade.
Brian, aren’t those the EDT (Eastern Daylite Savings Time) starting times and not the local times? (not sure by local if you meant STL or the location of the game but it doesn’t change the comment).
Yep, Eastern times. Correction made. Thanks, CC.
Memphis has some good players and is playing well at the right time.
The Cards have been clever in terms of maximizing play for their signees. Then they have added a few minor league vets to fill-in their remaining needs. They needed a couple of starting pitchers, so added MacLane and Perez. They needed lefty relievers for AAA, so recruited Ring, Manning, Ostlund, and Maakawa (sp). They needed help at 3B/SS a couple of years ago, so added Barden. The veteran AAA players are to fill-in gaps and supplement younger jocks who we have developed. Most of the AAA team is home-grown, with about 20 percent veteran supplements.
Hoffpauir, Greene, Freese, Jay, Craig , Garcia, Boggs are ML candidates now.
Robinson, Descalso, Anderson, Ottavino, Walters, Hamilton may need a little more development next year, but are coming along. Mather is a good one if he bounces back from a hamate operation.
For next season, Hearne, Lynn, Dickson, Henley, Brown seem strong candidates to ascend to AAA. Memphis should be strong again next summer.
