So, look what happened tonight (talk about a "case-in-point")! After cleaning-up the mess left by Reyes, Blake went on to pitch 2 hitless innings, before yielding to Trever's excellence. Could Blake, indeed, be that middle reliever "stud"?

WCW - I quite agree that Chris Carpenter needs to be kept within a reasonable pitch count and I presume that the term, "bull pen stud", refers to a first rate "set-up" man (a link between the Starter and our Closer). If so, I am unable to see one on our roster. While it appears that Trever Miller is used almost strictly for the effective vanquishing of left-handed batters, Blake Hawksworth shows promise (but is hardly established) and Kyle McClellan is mediocre (generally acceptable, but hardly a "stud"). While Dennys Reyes is somewhere between a Wellemeyer and a McClellan, Motte is simply not a major league pitcher. Since the only two certifiable stars within our Bullpen are Ryan Franklin and Trever Mller, I am hoping that Blake Hawksworth will develop into the role of the needed "stud".

True observations 57. He is starting to use more and more body "English" to achieve his competitive aspirations. The innings are mounting. If this guy is allowed to go over a reasonable pitch count, we could lose him for a 15 day or worse. We really need the bull pen stud just to keep this man viable through sept. I'm expecting a tense September unless some conflicts resolve.

I can see that Carpenter had struggled in the last outing for the third consecutive time, going deep into the counts and ringing-up an early 100 pitch count, yet he masterfully struck out ten! I suspect that if he struggles again on Monday against the Dodgers, he will yet not allow more than three runs and pick-up his thirteenth victory (keeping pace with the fourteenth victory that Wainwright will achieve today)!

Very impressive numbers there. I feel even more confident about the staff now, if possible.

Interesting subject, Brian.

I wonder how the oldtimers would do against the free swingers of today? Obviously the mound was higher back then - so one advantage to the pre-1969 pitcher as far as comparing different timeframes.

Wow- Carpenter is really something when healthy.
