The Cards have been making interesting use of the DL, to optimize their player assets.

Yarbrough spent a lot of time on the Memphis DL and got a break when Bryan Anderson was injured. Yarbrough has an OPS about 100 points higher. Catchers are valuable, such that use of the DL has enabled the Cards to keep 3 catchers at the AAA level.

OF Amaury Cazana Marti played in Mexico. This enables us to retain him, though there is not capacity for him on our AAA roster.

OF Mark Shorey has done ok as a AAA rookie. But because we are tight for slots at AAA, he is now on the DL.

Being a part-time AAA player should enable a guy to collect steady AAA pay, so it offers advantages to the player. He does not have to scramble to find a slot with another organization, often long odds. A guy like Yarbrough could conceivably catch a lucky break and find himself on a 40 man ML roster.

Jaime Garcia has been activated from the St Louis DL and optioned to Memphis.
This follows his 90-pitch start last Wednesday. Good for him!

It's good to see Bryan Anderson in a game, getting a hit, scoring a run, and catching 4 innings!
(GCL Cards)

The omissions of both Hoff and Boggs are in fact errors, s.f.. Hoff's has been that way for weeks, but Boggs is recent, as I printed the 40-man off the site on July 23 and Boggs was still there. (In reality, he was last optioned out just six days ago.)

Just because they are the "official" site, it doesn't mean they are always right! ;-)

Brian,

The Cardinals Web site and affiliated mlb.com both show Hoffpauir as being off the 40-man. Was he quietly outrighted at some point or is that an error? Error is possible, since the sites also show Boggs off the 40-man.

Thanks. Matt Adams told his hometown paper that he was told before he even signed up that he'd switch positions from catcher to first base. Maybe he started at JC rather than Bat. to work on the new position. If he advances too quick, he will have to switch again.

bb, not a stupid question at all. Glad you asked it. There is a hierarchy in the minor leagues, which is why the teams are listed in the order presented above. It is generally based on level of play and ages of the players. Some leagues actually have rules on player ages, for example.

It used to be that the college players would generally start at Batavia and the high schoolers would go to Johnson City. The Cards were often at a disadvantage by definition with a very young JC team, not having an entry-level US team in either the Arizona or Gulf Coast Leagues like most other organizations. They fixed that several years ago, adding a team in the GCL. In addition to draftees, the GCL club is most often the first US stopping off point for players that have graduated from the academies in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

From lower to higher, you have GCL -> JC -> Batavia, so Adams' move should be considered a promotion.

One other thought. Because the GCL team is located in the Cardinals complex in Jupiter, Florida, same place as Palm Beach, more and more injured players are doing rehab time in the GCL. A simple matter of convenience.

Hope that helps...

Brian, I dont know much about how the short season teams fit in, except I think college players go there as the first stop. What is the difference between Johnson City and Batavia and why might Matt Adams get sent from one to the other? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Minor Erratum -- In the Aug 3 transactions, it should be Kyle Conley (not Cawley).
It's correct in the matrix.

Division II pitching can be not that great, based on seeing a lot of it at summer league games in Hannibal and Quincy. Matt Adams is hitting at Johnson City, but I think AA pitching will show us if we have a prospect.

http://www.rockathletics.com/news/2009/6/11/BB_0611095335.aspx

Big Matt Adams is hitting .400 for Johnson City. He is the 4th player drafted by the Cards from Rock, three others being selected back in 1982 and 1983.
Slippery Rock is a Division II NCAA school. In 2009, Adams led all Division II colleges in batting average. I guess the provides perspective about Division II baseball. Just because you play well there, does not make you a high draft choice.

Another guy like this was 1B Curt Smith. Smith hit a ton for the University of Maine-Orono, but this only got him drafted in the 40th round, because an undersized 1B. Smith hit well at Johnson City last summer and has shown he can handle the stick at Palm Beach and Springfield this year. (Because a bigger guy, Big Matt projects better at 1B.)

Another Div II wonder is 3B Racobaldo. He is a senior from a college that was the national Division II champion in 2008. He is hitting .400 at Johnson City as well.

Some folks are dismissive about small college guys. But the Cards are getting good production out of some of them.

Not to worry, Jumbo. My current plan, if I can fit it all into a 24-hour day, is to continue to operate this blog - both free of cost and free from advertising - on top of running the Scout.com Cardinals site. Of course, subscribing to the latter is much appreciated as a way to offer support and help me pay the bills.

I have been pleased and honored to have been a financial supporter of Scout.com during times bygone. I shall have to be strong and forego this welcome reportage that I can still commend unto others.
Now some of my contributions, "useless" though they may be, seem provided here, at the Cardinal Nation. They seem merely semantic, but if a subcription scheme were to be introduced in future, I shall endeavor to support this worthy cause. JumboShrimp is no a free rider!

Some players get suspended after an infraction, some get put on the DL owing to an injury, some are listed as restricted. Restriction could include guys who choose to stop playing and do something else. One player listed as restricted is corner OF Shepherd, an 11th rounder in 08 and unsigned 5th rounder in 06. He is a strong guy, a Mr. Goodbody projection, who has yet to harness his gifts. Too bad if he got frustrated and gave up. But its a long climb and young men can reasonably choose to do something else. For this reason, the Cards sign as many such guys as they can, in case some others break through.

A junior college freshman, Rosenthal (21) reputedly has a strong arm, so its nice that he signed. He should have had college offers, so the Cards were competitive with these. Probably had to spend some money on his bonus.

Its uncommon for a contract to be disinvented, as with Folino (27). The Cards wanted to add lots of pitchers, but apparently changed their mind in his case, though he was in Batavia and on the team, interviewed by his hometown newspaper. Maybe the medical review. Since he had not pitched yet, the contract could be disinvented with minimal publicity.

Brown looks like another Bravo situation. They assign him to PB but he's playing in the GCL game. Salas is in the GCL game today also.

I can understand the confusion. Neither of the players (McCormick and Dew) are with the club, but for paperwork purposes, that is where the Cardinals placed them this season. Physically, they are likely either in Jupiter or rehabbing at home. That contrasts with Kopp.

In past seasons, Mike Lindskog of Springfield maintained the team's roster, which was on their official website. It was separate from MiLB's. MiLB has been busy assimilating individual team and league sites, bringing (forcing) them into the MiLB template, which happened to Spr this season.

Well the subject came up when I was trying to convince Matt Baker to do an update on McCormack's injury status (since he had just done one on Kopp's) He said that neither McCormack or Dew were on the rosters he gets from the Springfield Cardinals on a regular basis. At that point I did refer to Milb.com.

Are team sites at Milb.com the team sites in a consistent format (a la scout.com) or are they Milb.com sites with info on each team? I assumed that the Springfield site was the Springfield official site in a Milb.com format but maybe not.

CC, what are you considering the "official roster"? Not MiLB.com, I hope. There are often errors there. In fact, as far as MiLB.com is concerned, neither Dew nor McCormick exists. Try to find them. Arredondo has yet to pitch in a game but was on the last "official roster" I was provided by JC. I go with what the clubs provide, not what is on MiLB.com.

Brian, do you know where McCormack and Dew are officially assigned? You have them at Springfield but they aren't on the official roster there. Are they simply unassigned?

Arrendondo is no longer on the JC DL but active at GCL. He's a guy I was high on but who knows after the injury.

I spoke with Scott Friday evening as he was packing to head to Jupiter. I appended our audio interview to the earlier article on the Scout.com homepage (subscriber content). I have never seen Bittle pitch live, but I am hoping he will be ready to join Batavia soon as I will be catching up with the club later this month.

The media guide is an annual publication.

I understand the reasoning for Sedbrook. Thanks, Brian.
By the way, how often is the media guide updated? just curious

Good news on Bittle's signing.
Hope they go easy on his arm the rest of this year.
He's got an out pitch that good SEC hitters had trouble picking up and getting good "wood" on.

Fourth-rounder Scott Bittle is signed. Details in a subscriber-only article at Scout.com. Until he is assigned to a club, I will list him above as "unassigned" as I did with Kelly for awhile.
