In preparation for their Friday and Saturday home exhibitions against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Memphis Redbirds of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League have announced their season-opening roster.
It includes 26 players, of which eleven are on the Cardinals 40-man roster. Six Redbirds have major league experience, including Nick Stavinoha (pictured), who now appears to be Memphis’ first baseman.
Updates: The Post-Dispatch reports a move of Jess Todd to the bullpen, which opened up a starting position for Adam Ottavino, who has looked good this spring. The Springfield News-Leader notes reliever Fernando Salas remained in Florida with a brace on his arm and his injured thumb bandaged.

4 southpaws in the Memphis pen to provide depth behind Reyes and Miller.
No Amaury Cazana (Marti), but Mark Shorey has climbed another rung.
3 catchers listed.
As soon as Springfield gets the ok to release their roster, I will try to find out what happened to Amaury if it is not obvious.
Am I correct to assume that Memphis must still trim 2 players?
Yes, the active roster is 24 I believe. Perhaps two will be injured over the weekend… Not wishing ill will on anyone, mind you, including those on the big club…
No Salas ???? !!!! This guy has NOTHING to prove in Springfield.
Brian, I liked the age listing on the QC roster if you can do that simply on the others – I hate to have to do the birthday math!
CC, not to be a contrarian, but I prefer the birthdate info. Take Chris Perez, for example. The cutoff for “age” for a season is July 1, which is his birthday. Had he been born a few hours earlier on June 30, he would have played 2008 as a 23 year old instead of a 22 year old.
A few years ago, thebaseballcube.com used a different date than July 1, which is used by baseball-reference.com. I convinced the guy at the cube to change their listing so both sites showed a player the same age. Daric Barton was the guy I was questioning at the time.
Interesting…
Stavi listed as an infielder? Will he be the primary 1B, with Craig at 3B, and Mather in the OF?
I like seeing Shorey. Marti must be on the way out. Why send him to Mexico AGAIN?
I wonder if they are going to make Salas a starter somewhere? He certainly doesn’t need more pen work in AA.
Hmm…
I posted a note a few minutes ago that must be swirling around somewhere in cyberspece but I prefer the birthdate be shown. Case in point, Chris Perez celebrates his birthday on July 1 and was listed on baseball-america.com as a 22 year old in 2008. Had he been born a few hours earlier on June 30, he would have been listed as a 23 year old.
While the math might be a little work, CC, it’s a good mental exercise.
Yes, easton, I think that is it. Stavi was playing at first in Florida. I guess he is also the fourth-string catcher! It will be interesting to see if StL orders Mather play at third as a buffer for Freese or if they just let Craig play. Here is hoping the latter.
Perhaps Salas and Marti are both returning to Mexico?
DD, I had to release your first note from the spam queue. My guess as to why it ended up there was the use of two URLs to other sites (done to avoid the free Viagra type posts than might otherwise slip through).
Ah Diz, but the QC roster had both!
Springfield writer Baker has posted on his blog that Salas has an injuried hand (pitching hand) and is staying behind in Florida
Thanks for the tip VJ. Baker is also quoting Vuck as waivering a little on Ottavino and Todd saying there is a #decent chance” that Ottaino will start there and that Todd will be in the BP.
Has anyone heard anything about McCormick – he had that one nice outing that had articles written about him the day after. Did not see him in any Vuch report after that and he is not showing on AA roster – injury again or just taking it slow with his recovery?
i was wondering also – threw great and disappeared.
That looks like a lot of guys that could fill in for the big club, not to mention it looks like this team itself should be pretty decent
I really like the young ages of the players on the three rosters posted so far, especially the Memphis shortstop who must be quite a prodigy at age five.
Colby Rasmus would be the second youngest player on the Memphis roster had he been sent down but I like seeing five guys on the Quad Cities roster that will turn 20 this year.
I count 17 players who could be in St Louis sometime this season not counting on one of the southpaws.
That is quite a contrast to a few years ago.
stl plays two games in memphis and craig gets one AB. color me confused
Back on the 26th, I mentioned that Craig had been out after being hit on the elbow with a pitch. Perhaps that is still bothering him…
thank you. i read that article too. must be alzheimers kicking in
