Brian, you are the first site with the Vuch report as you are every day!
Is that a good thing or are you suggesting I get a life – or both?
Or that maybe that I get a life and don’t stay up until nearly midnight (where I am at) waiting for some site to post it!
O
Or we could just consider Cardinal baseball the most important thing in life!
Pham with only a lousy double? What happened to his string of triples? I’m guessing he tripped rounding first. Didn’t he have something like five triples over the last three games?
As I recall, Pham also played very well last spring. He seems a pretty intense young man. Here is hoping the game comes together for him this season.
The Cards have force-fed Pham, because they are high on him and want to challenge him. In 2007, he struggled to hit .200 in the NYPa league, competing against lads generally 3 years older. At onset of 2008, the Cards skipped Pham to Palm Beach, where he was unsurprisingly overmatched, before sending him to Quad Cities. He will probably give PB another shot this year and not find it easy, unless he pulls a Darryl Jones (improve despite rising a level).
I had a chance to get to know Tommy last year when he was here in the QCs. I’ve never met anyone who was so intent on learning and improving his game. It didn’t matter who was talking, Tommy was listening and asking questions about how to get better. He is VERY intense on the field. Once I got to know him, I found him to be a truly fine young man. I even got to spend an evening with him in Las Vegas when I was out there a couple of months ago. He showed me and a couple of my friends around town. I predict that he will make the Show by 2012.
Sport, you are fortunate to meet so many young players. When the Cards drafted Pham, Luhnow said he was reminded of Derek Jeter. Another comp by scouts was Scott Hairston, a hitting oriented player, who played for the Padres last year, IIRC.
I saw mention that some scenes from then new movie about a Dominican baseball player, Sugar, were shot at the Quad Cities ballpark. Will this be your screen debut?
Jumbo,
I avoided the lure of Hollywood. The movie producers asked me if I would “loan” them some of my old local baseball uniforms (River Bandits and that other horrible name that we were forced to use for five years) and I declined to “give” them anything. As it turns out, those who allowed their stuff to be used are still trying to get it back.
I do feel very privileged to have met so many great ball players when they were at a level that I COULD meet them. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau are friends of mine. Colby Rasmus feels like the son I never had. When you get to sit down to dinner with a guy, you get to know him on a diffferent level than if you just watch him play ball.
>>I’ve asked on the scout.com site and I’ll repeat my request here. As I’ll be writing regular articles again this summer, if you have a general question that you would like me to ask, please post the question here. Since I never know who I’ll be talking to in any week, it will be difficult to take questions for specific players, but general questions from you will help me write more about what you want to hear. Questions and suggestions are welcome! You can also send questions to Brian and he will forward them to me. << (I hope Brian doesn’t mind that!!)
Don’t mind at all…
