Brian,
Wells was used as a reliever in 2001 with the White Sox, 2007 with the Cards and 2008 with the Rockies and Royals. His best season in the pen so far was (naturally) with Duncan and the Cards.

I have to confess that I respect the Dad of Julian Tavarez. He told like it was, to Julian. Does J-Lo want you? No.
Daddy Tavarez simply cannot tell a lie, even to his darling son.
Hopefully, Mr. Walton will come up with some more J-Lo photos.

Have you ever seen free agents more reluctant to sign with a team than the Nationals this season? It's as if players have to be dragged there kicking and screaming. Still, not a bright move by Mr. Tavarez to bash his new team.

What's the story with Mather? He really isn't hitting well, now. Is there a chance Barden or Thurston get put on third in his place? If so, does that mean he goes to Memphis? I should think if Mather doesn't make the 25-man, it means Rasmus definitely will.

lg, out of curiosity, how old are those relief stats?

DD, it was an interesting game today. Both home runs were good to see. Ankiel really got around on his down the line. T Greene had good moments and bad defensively. Rasmus and Mather each just missed great catches. Thompson wasn't as bad as the line score as the shortstop was late to take the throw at second on what should have been a double play, but he suffered the indignity of being taken out mid-inning. Motte got at least one K on his changeup and looks very confident out there.

I was as puzzled by the Nats sgning Tavarez as anyone. But signing Kip Wells? That one depends on whether they want to use him as a starter or as a releiver. If it's as a starter, then yes, they are as crazy as the Cardinals were for expecting much. But if it's as a reliever where he has a respectable 6-3 record with a 3.43 ERA, 1.2857 baserunners per inning, 7.6 K/9 and just 4 homers allowed in 84 career innings, then they might be crazy like a fox.

Ankiel looked like a stud today. he was three for three plus a walk, all off lefties, including a monstrous home run off Kazmir.

I was beginning to wonder if lefties had figured out a hole in Rick's swing. He was not very good against them in 2008, although he did hit seven home runs in 116 AB's. In 2007, he tore up lefties so his two year line against them is .272/.306/.543. I'll take that and I'll take the over on the OBP.

Kazmir, by the way, was interviewed after he came out of the game and was complaining about not feeling well. IIRC, he'd had a bout with the stomach flu. It's kind of unusual to see pro ballplayers blaming their outing on a physical problem.

Worrell has been a pretty good prospect for a long time, including amateur performance and the minors. It is cruel Fate if he has suffered a bum elbow.
Good to see Pomeranz trying out . Maybe he has been rebuilding arm strength. Shoulder operations are tough.
Good outlook by Julian Tavarez. Do whatever they want.
Last I looked, Anthony Reyes was pitching ok for the Indians.

I wonder if Tavarez was inebriated when he was talking to the reporters. Further, I wonder how the Nationals feel about being compared to a 600 lb woman that looks like J-Lo if you drink enough (jeez how much do you have to drink for that to be the case?). Those quotes are just classic.
