Walton on Wednesday Fantasy Focus show

I will be Jeff Erickson’s leadoff guest on Wednesday’s Fantasy Focus show on Blog Talk Radio. The segment can be heard live from Noon-12:30 p.m. Eastern on March 4th or on demand. Our focus will be the 2009 Cardinals, obviously.

Those devotees of XM Satellite Radio are likely already aware of the long-running Fantasy Focus show. For 2009, it has moved from XM to Blog Talk Radio. Listen live, Monday through Friday at Noon ET, or on demand.

I think Jeff Erickson invited me to go golfing once with him and Joe Sheehan at San Dimas Canyon but we never made a connection. Ask him about it.

There are a number of good folks in the fantasy industry who I can call friends, with Jeff and Joe clearly among them. I see both in person twice each year, with the next in NYC for Tout Wars draft weekend just following my spring training trip. March is the best month of my year for many reasons.

I play in a 5 x 5 NL only keepers league and have done so since Greg Maddux was a Cub, the first time. There are only ten of us now but several were in the league when I joined.

We get together for lunch now and then, take in a couple of Dodger games and have even gone to the Epicenter to see the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes back when they were a Padres affiliate.

Our pots have been averaging over $12,000 per year so it’s not for the weak-hearted. Last year, Lincecum’s 13 K’s and a home run by Edwin Encarnacion on the last day of the season moved me up to second place and a check for more than $3000. Without both of those two things happening, I would’ve finished in fourth, worth about $1700 less.

If Manny Ramirez re-signs with the Dodgers or another NL team, I’ll have to $240.00 to dump him. Four and a half weeks to draft day!

    Way cool Mr. Walton,
I read Fantasyland last year and enjoyed it. That is a pretty darn competitive league you are in !

Off topic but I am looking forward to your eyeball accounts and analysis of the Cardinal players in Jupiter, especially the youngsters.

It was so weird to read the book. It was almost like spying on friends talking about each other. Over on Scout, I did a three-part series on it. The first was a book review, while the next two were about Sig Mejdal, now with the Cardinals, but then a major character in the book. (Two of the three articles are free.) There is a movie based on “Fantasyland” coming as well. The book is about the American League league, and I am in the National. My best finish to date has been fourth, but I cratered last year. Time to rectify that!

I’ll need to pack the sunscreen for sure as I expect to spend much of my Florida time on the back fields.

The show went well. Nice job!

Thanks. The 30 minutes flew by. I probably should have given Tyler Greene some more love and definitely should have had a glass of water ready! It’s a lot of talking in a short time period!
